Match preview:

The Melbourne Stars will be hoping to get their BBL campaign back on track when they meet the Melbourne Renegades for the second time this season on Saturday night. Join us here at The Roar on Saturday night for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at 6:45pm AEDT.

The New Years Day Melbourne derby proved to be a positive one for the Stars, as they coasted to a breezy seven-wicket win over their cross-town rivals the Melbourne Renegades with just over two overs remaining in that morale-boosting victory.

Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell were the stalwarts who guided the Stars home in that game, with Stoinis’s blitzkrieg knock of 78 off 49 balls snuffing out any chance of a Renegades renaissance.

Since then, the Stars have fallen dramatically in their hunt for BBL success, and with just one more victory coming against the Strikers before a string of three consecutive losses sees them languishing at the bottom of the table.

They must win tonight to restore some sort of life and hope into a BBL campaign that looks very much derailed at this end of the tournament.

Meanwhile the Melbourne Renegades see themselves sitting pretty at second place on the BBL ladder, and if they keep up their current good run of match-winning form, they may well be strong semi-final contenders once again.

Playing at home at the fiery Marvel Stadium will no doubt also raise their confidence levels, with the passionate Renegades fanbase always keen to get behind their team.

A 101-run hiding from the Brisbane Heat and a dispiriting 32-run loss to the Adelaide Strikers hasn’t been enough to dent their hopes of BBL glory – if anything they learned from those failures and secured convincing victories against the Sydney Sixers and top dogs Hobart Hurricanes to reinstate their confidence.

The Renegades’ batting line up is finally starting to click together with the likes of Tom Cooper, Sam Harper, Cameron White, Dan Christian and Afghan star Mohammad Nabi all finding form in their preceding matches.

Just one good innings from this power-packed bunch is all the Renegades need to take this game by the scruff of the neck.

Join us here at The Roar on Saturday night for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at 6:45pm AEDT.

Prediction
The Melbourne Stars are severely down on confidence right now, and given their current position on the BBL ladder, the pressure on them to win every game from here on in will be immense.

Unless we see Dwayne Bravo, Glen Maxwell or Marcus Stoinis pull off a daring act of heroism, the Renegades should get home comfortably tonight in this second BBL Melbourne derby.

Still reckon Finch and Khawaja with Stoinis at 3 was worth a shot in the ODI series.

The Stars continue to have the wood over the Renegades in the Derby, and it was that man Marcus Stoinis who brought it home for his side once again with a calm and cool 70 from 65 balls as well as blunting the home team’s chance of setting a big score collecting 3 wickets for just 19 runs. No doubt who will collect the Man of the Match award tonight here. The pressure to win this game didn’t show at all for the Stars, and a clinical bowling performance followed by some risk-free batting towards the end ensured that they got home comfortably. The Renegades’ batsmen played a lot of irresponsible shots and executed their plans poorly and will need to get back to the drawing board to go over their mistakes tonight. Although they aren’t completely out of finals contention yet, this pendulum-like swing in winning momentum for the Renegades is something they need to address as we head into the business end of the tournament. The Stars will be buoyed by this victory and will have the confidence to ensure they can win their rest of their games. In the end, a final score of just 121 was never going to seriously threaten the Stars, unless the home team took regular wickets to stem the flow of runs. Stoinis had a great game, with Nic Maddinson and Dwayne Bravo providing reliable and stable support to bring them over the finish line. Thank you to all our readers who tuned into tonight's live blog. Hope you all enjoyed our coverage and we look forward to your company next time! Cheers.

Yeah he seems to have some sort of love affair with Stoinis doesn't he? But Stoinis played well tonight.

Warne spruiking Stoinis on repeat again in commentary. While I am a fan of the big unit Stoinis, Warne really needs to peg it back, its just relentless. Every game, the same statements 4 or 5 times. Also Warne is also just hearing about Hazlewood being out and Richardson being called in! Liking the input from the Reiwoldts - breaking up the same old stuff from the commentary panel tonight.
