Match preview:

The Melbourne Stars will be hoping to get their BBL campaign back on track when they meet the Melbourne Renegades for the second time this season on Saturday night. Join us here at The Roar on Saturday night for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at 6:45pm AEDT.

The New Years Day Melbourne derby proved to be a positive one for the Stars, as they coasted to a breezy seven-wicket win over their cross-town rivals the Melbourne Renegades with just over two overs remaining in that morale-boosting victory.

Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell were the stalwarts who guided the Stars home in that game, with Stoinis’s blitzkrieg knock of 78 off 49 balls snuffing out any chance of a Renegades renaissance.

Since then, the Stars have fallen dramatically in their hunt for BBL success, and with just one more victory coming against the Strikers before a string of three consecutive losses sees them languishing at the bottom of the table.

They must win tonight to restore some sort of life and hope into a BBL campaign that looks very much derailed at this end of the tournament.

Meanwhile the Melbourne Renegades see themselves sitting pretty at second place on the BBL ladder, and if they keep up their current good run of match-winning form, they may well be strong semi-final contenders once again.

Playing at home at the fiery Marvel Stadium will no doubt also raise their confidence levels, with the passionate Renegades fanbase always keen to get behind their team.

A 101-run hiding from the Brisbane Heat and a dispiriting 32-run loss to the Adelaide Strikers hasn’t been enough to dent their hopes of BBL glory – if anything they learned from those failures and secured convincing victories against the Sydney Sixers and top dogs Hobart Hurricanes to reinstate their confidence.

The Renegades’ batting line up is finally starting to click together with the likes of Tom Cooper, Sam Harper, Cameron White, Dan Christian and Afghan star Mohammad Nabi all finding form in their preceding matches.

Just one good innings from this power-packed bunch is all the Renegades need to take this game by the scruff of the neck.

Prediction
The Melbourne Stars are severely down on confidence right now, and given their current position on the BBL ladder, the pressure on them to win every game from here on in will be immense.

Unless we see Dwayne Bravo, Glen Maxwell or Marcus Stoinis pull off a daring act of heroism, the Renegades should get home comfortably tonight in this second BBL Melbourne derby.
