The Melbourne Renegades kick off their 2019-20 campaign at home against the Sydney Thunder in game three of BBL09. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the game from 7:10pm (AEDT).
The Thunder travel to Geelong to play the defending champion Renegades off the back of an impressive 29-run victory over the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.
Captain Callum Ferguson was the star in that game, coming in at number three to score 73* off just 44 deliveries in an innings that featured six fours and three sixes. The South Australian will be hoping for a repeat performance against his former club.
As the defending champions, the Renegades will be under plenty of pressure to perform early in the season.
It has been far from an ideal preparation for incoming coach Michael Klinger, having had to deal with the last-minute unavailability of Pakistani imports Faheem Ashraf and Usman Shinwari.
However, the addition of T20 specialist Shaun Marsh, who had played his entire BBL career with the Perth Scorchers, will more than compensate for the absence of the Pakistani pair, as well as other off-season departures like Cameron White, Chris Tremain and Tim Ludeman.
Prediction
Renegades in a tight one.
This will go down to the wire, but Melbourne should have what it takes at home to get one over the Thunder and open their title defence with a win.

Match Report The Sydney Thunder have notched up their second win on the trot to start the 2019-20 BBL season with a bang with a six-wicket victory over defending champions the Melbourne Renegades in Geelong with just two balls to spare. Thunder openers Usman Khawaja (66) and Alex Hales (68) were the stars for Sydney. Both displayed plenty of patience early on in the piece, before deciding to let fly and score quick runs to get their side in with a chance. The Renegades won the toss and skipper Aaron Finch elected to bat. It seemed like a master-stroke, as he and fellow opener Sam Harper put on a quick-fire 55-run partnership before Harper was dismissed for 39 off just 19 balls. New recruit Shaun Marsh was impressive on debut for the Renegades, hitting 42 of 33 deliveries, while Finch (29 off 22) was the other major contributor with the bat for Melbourne. The Renegades would have been eying a score in the 180-190 range at one stage, but some tight bowling from Nathan McAndrew and Arjun Nair later in the innings allowed the Thunder to restrict them to just 169 off their 20 overs. The Thunder were behind where they needed to be for much of their run chase. Khawaja and Hales both started off slowly, but managed to let loose and hit some boundaries before both were dismissed by Renegades bowler Harry Gurney (2/26 off 4 overs). Kane Richardson also returned excellent figures for the Renegades with 0/18 off his four-over spell (including 14 dot balls)! However, it the Thunder were able to ride out the tough periods by keeping the strike rotating. Some sloppy fielding from the Renegades as well as several wides at crucial times also kept the Thunder in the game. In the end it was number five batsman Alex Ross who hit the winning runs off Gleeson with a big four down the ground to send the Sydney faithful into a frenzy as the Thunder cemented top spot on the BBL ladder with two away wins to start the season. Four Alex Ross with a big four down the ground to win the match for the Thunder! They're two from two to start BBL 09. Disappointment for the Renegades. Sloppy fielding and a poor over from Christian late in the second innings have cost them dearly! Match report to come. Sydney Thunder win by Six Wickets
