The Melbourne Renegades kick off their 2019-20 campaign at home against the Sydney Thunder in game three of BBL09. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the game from 7:10pm (AEDT).

The Thunder travel to Geelong to play the defending champion Renegades off the back of an impressive 29-run victory over the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.

Captain Callum Ferguson was the star in that game, coming in at number three to score 73* off just 44 deliveries in an innings that featured six fours and three sixes. The South Australian will be hoping for a repeat performance against his former club.

As the defending champions, the Renegades will be under plenty of pressure to perform early in the season.

It has been far from an ideal preparation for incoming coach Michael Klinger, having had to deal with the last-minute unavailability of Pakistani imports Faheem Ashraf and Usman Shinwari.

However, the addition of T20 specialist Shaun Marsh, who had played his entire BBL career with the Perth Scorchers, will more than compensate for the absence of the Pakistani pair, as well as other off-season departures like Cameron White, Chris Tremain and Tim Ludeman.

Prediction
Renegades in a tight one.

This will go down to the wire, but Melbourne should have what it takes at home to get one over the Thunder and open their title defence with a win.
