The Melbourne Stars welcome the Sydney Sixers to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the final clash of the Big Bash home-and-away season. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 2:45pm (AEDT).
The Melbourne Stars were poor up in Brisbane a couple of days ago, losing by a total of 10 wickets.
Marcus Stoinis was the only positive to come out of the game, as he continued his good form with the bat scoring 81 runs, which propelled the Stars to 156 in 20 overs.
Max Bryant (71 not out) and Ben Cutting (81 not out) were superb for the Brisbane Heat in the chase, as they completed the task within 10 overs.
The Stars now require a victory over the Sixers to secure a finals spot. Their confidence no doubt would have been rocked after the clash with the Heat, but they have no time to dwell.
As for the Sydney Sixers, they have secured a finals berth. From the 13 games the Sixers have played, they have won eight and lost five.
In their previous game leading up to the trip to Melbourne, they faced the Sydney Thunder and won the game comprehensively by nine wickets (DLS method).
The Sixers appear to have an even bowling group, who all contribute with wickets.
Sean Abbott and Tom Curran were the pick of the bowlers against the Thunder taking two wickets each. Steve O’Keefe and Ben Dwarshuis took one each, also.
With the bat, Daniel Hughes (41 not out) and James Vince (43 not out) guided the Sixers home in the chase.
There is no denying that the Hobart Hurricanes are the favourites of the competition, but the Sixers possess talent and will fancy their chances come finals.
Prediction
Both sides are quite even on paper, but the home ground advantage could be the difference here.
The fact the Melbourne team also have to win should mean they are up for this game.
The Stars to prevail in a close one.

Should the Stars beat the Hurricanes in Hobart on Thursday, and the renegades beat the Sixers on Friday, would cricket Australia make the renegades host the final at the MCG? As a Melbourne Derby Big Final would draw a massive crowd, well over 80,000.

There is only 3 teams that can win the bbl and the sixers are not one of them. They are hopeless, absolutely crap and a waste of space in the finals. They will be smashed by the renegades and they will deserve it. Poor excuses for cricketers!!!

Here’s a curly concept. The Laws of Cricket say in respect of Run Out that a batsman is run out if at any time while the ball is in play no part of his bat or person is grounded behind the popping crease and his wicket is fairly put down by the opposing side. In today’s BBL game, the toe of Lyon’s bat was safely over the line before the bails were removed, but at the moment the bails were removed the shoulder of his bat was on the wrong side of the popping crease, with most of his bat not grounded past the popping crease: out. I can easily imagine situations in which a batsman has safely run into the safe side of the popping crease, only to still be running and with both feet in the air at the time the keeper dislodges the bails, with the batsman say two metres past the stumps. Under the strict application of the Laws of Cricket, the batsman would be out, with no part of her/his person grounded. Does anyone have any thoughts?

The Melbourne Stars have secured a 94-run victory over the Sydney Sixers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The win secures a finals spot for the Stars, and they have Glenn Maxwell to thank for that being the case. Maxwell scored 82 runs, which gave the Sixers a target of 169 runs to win. The Stars spinners in Adam Zampa and Sandeep Lamichhane were superb, taking five wickets between them. The Sixers needed to score above 107 to secure a home final, but they could not achieve the task set, being dismissed for 74.
