The summer of cricket has arrived, with the JLT one-day cup set to get things going in Townsville as Queensland and Victoria square off in the opening match. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10am (AEST).

The Bulls come into the new summer aiming to perform on a much higher level than they did 12 months ago.

With the new competition format, all teams will make the finals, but finishing outside the top two leaves teams under a heavy disadvantage, given they will have to play an extra knockout game just to face either of the top two teams.

While none of the Test players will participate in the JLT Cup, Victoria will have Glenn Maxwell in their side.

He has been controversially overlooked for Australia’s trip to the UAE to play Pakistan, but will hand the Victorians a huge boost in this competition.

He is joined in a strong batting order by former New South Wales Blues batsman Nic Maddinson who will be out to get his career back on track, while Peter Handscomb, Scott Boland, Cameron White, Aussie bolter Chris Tremain and youngster Will Sutherland also all appear in the squad.

It’s little surprise the Victorian side are tournament favourites with talent littered all the way across their side.

Queensland themselves have named a handy squad, albeit one gutted by Test selection as they lose Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Brendan Doggett.

They welcome back one of the biggest hitting batsmen in Australian cricket, Chris Lynn, who will captain the side throughout the tournament. The experience of Joe Burns will also be welcomed at the top of the batting order.

It’s their attack where they will be able to make the biggest inroads into other strong sides though, with Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson and Australian limited overs quick Billy Stanlake all in the squad.

If they can’t keep the strong Victorian batting order to a lower score though, they will be in all sorts because the depth in their batting simply isn’t there.

Prediction
Victoria, on paper, are the strongest side coming into this tournament. With Boland and Tremain leading their attack in conditions which could allow for the ball to hoop around a little bit, they should well and truly have the edge with both bat and ball here.

Victoria pretty comfortably.

Missed the end of the game. Great effort from the tail to get so close. The top six as a unit let us down, Bryant excluded to a degree.

The young guns of Swepson, Steketee, Bryant, O'Connell and Sutherland really shone today and showcased the strength of the domestic competition in Australia. However, the big difference between the 2 teams was the 101 partnership between the 2 player's with the most to prove in Maddinson and Maxwell won Victoria the game.

END OF MATCH Victoria have seen off a late resurgence from the Queensland Bulls to claim the opening match of the JLT one-day cup by 13 runs at the Riverway Stadium in Townsville. The visitors got away to a good start, and but it all unravelled with the loss of regular wickets. Glenn Maxwell (80) and Nic Maddinson (61) steadied the ship for the Bushrangers as they put on more than 100 runs for the fifth wicket. It was a quality effort from the pair, with more runs from the tail through Chris Tremain (17 not out) and Scott Boland (12) ensuring they would get to a somewhat competitive total of 240. The Bulls were led in the bowling by Mark Steketee, who took four wickets. Mitchell Swepson also had two. In reply, it was regular wickets for the Bulls. They struggled to get into the run chase and while Max Bryant tonked his way to 45 at the top of the order, he couldn't find any partners. Joe Burns and Mitchell Swepson eventually combined with the side at 7 for 104 following the departure of Mark Steketee for a run-a-ball 17. The early carnage was the creation of Will Sutherland, who ended with figures of 5 for 45 on his way to a man of the match performance. With the Bushrangers main bowlers running out of overs though, Swepson, who ended up the last man out with 77, found support in Xavier Bartlett as the pair put on 77 for the ninth wicket to make things far closer than they ever should have been. In the end, Bartlett got out to swinging at a wide one, while Swepson was caught at mid off to end the match just 13 runs from victory. Both sides will have their next match against Tasmania in Townsville over the next week before heading south for more fixtures.

WICKET! Mitch Swepson, Caught Scott Boland, Bowled Chris Tremain 77 (78) What a gallant effort this has been from Swepson. He and the Bulls feel just short though. He tried to clear mid off again, got it off the edge this time, but couldn't clear Scott Boland, who was stationed right on the edge of the 30-metre circle. Queensland never should have got that close. What a match. Queensland 10/227 (46.5) Victoria 10/240 (48.3)

Tremain has a backward point and a third man on the fence here. He will bowl full and wide, hoping for an edge. Swing and miss this time from Swepson. Queensland 9/227 (46.2) Victoria 10/240 (48.3)

Full and wide from Tremain here to start the over. Swepson gets it over Maxwell at point and the deep third man makes a good chase to keep it to two. Queensland 9/227 (46.1) Victoria 10/240 (48.3)

Maddinson to bowl. Swepson drives the first to cover, but can't get a run for it. The second is to long off and they don't take the single. Queensland 9/222 (45.2) Victoria 10/240 (48.3)

WICKET! Xavier Bartlett, Caught Seb Gotch, Bowled Chris Tremain 28 (57) The final ball of the over and Bartlett chases a wide one! He didn't need to, but gets an outside edge. Gotch completes the catch. Queensland need 19 runs to win from 5 overs. Swepson is on strike, Tremain has one over left. It's all happening here. Queensland 9/222 (45) Victoria 10/240 (48.3)
