The first round of Super 12 games continues with Sri Lanka taking on Ireland at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3pm AEDT.
What a year it has been for Sri Lanka. With the team finally gelling and getting consistent games together, they entered the T20 World Cup as champions of Asia.
But it seems the champions tag has hampered their cricket, as they haven’t been at their best with the bat or ball. However, they have won seven of their past nine T20I games, and have a promising line-up primed to score runs.
Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka will be tasked with batting through the innings, while Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s cameos could be the difference at the death.
Sri Lanka have a few injuries in their bowling department, but they still have some quality contributors. Leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana are some of the best T20 slow bowlers in the world, while Chamika Karunaratne is proving that medium pacers still have a role in the slog overs of T20 cricket.
Ireland are known for their shock wins in the 50-over ICC tournaments, but they are proving to be a solid T20 team over the past 12 months.
Riding on the momentum of a come-from-behind victory against Scotland and then proceeding to thrash the West Indies in the qualifying stage, Ireland will be licking their lips at the prospect of beating another full member.
With the bat, Paul Stirling will look to continue his run of form, while leg spinning all-rounder Gareth Delaney needs to have a big game in order for Ireland to have a chance.
Prediction
Ireland have played some of their best cricket this tournament, while Sri Lanka are building their way to that. The Irish have also got knowledge of the Hobart conditions, having played all of their Round 1 games in the Tasmanian capital. But it’s hard to say Ireland are favourites when their opposition has a spin attack as deadly as Hasaranga and Theekshana.
Sri Lanka are favourites, but only just. The middle order needs to step up for the Sri Lankans or it could be another historic day in Irish cricket.
