Both the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades have had middling starts to their BBL campaigns, and after eight matches both teams remain in a sudden death position at eight points apiece. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:15pm (AEDT).

The Sixers find themselves in third place due to their net run rate being marginally better than the Renegades by a mere 0.59, showing that there really isn’t much separating both teams so far.

If we were to disregard the net run-rate entirely, at this point of the competition the Thunder, Sixers, Strikers and Renegades are all effectively in second place which means this tournament is still anybody’s for the taking.

All the more exciting for the viewers as it makes tonight’s clash between the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades a compelling game to watch.

After a confident start, the Melbourne Renegades have somewhat fallen away in their campaign, with three consecutive losses coming after a closely fought victory against the Adelaide Strikers in the sixth game of this BBL edition at the Adelaide Oval.

In that match, the experienced duo of Mohammad Nabi and Dan Christian forged an explosive 94 run partnership to lift their side over the line in their chase of 176, after teetering at 5 for 82. How the Renegades will be wishing for them to fire again in this encounter.

The last time these two teams locked horns, the Sixers decimated the Renegades at Marvel Stadium, the latter’s home turf.

After posting a below-par score of 132, a combined bowling effort by Steven O’Keefe, English import Tom Curran and Sean Abbott stifled the home team to a paltry 9 for 99, making this one of the Renegades’ most humiliating losses to the Sixers.

There’s no doubt the Sixers hold the psychological advantage going into this second clash at the SCG, and with the added home crowd support, they should be marked favourites going into this battle.

The Renegades need to find a way to blunt the ever-accurate left-arm spin of Steven O’Keefe, who is currently the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, to have a chance of overcoming the Sixers in this must-win game.

Prediction
The Sixers’ bowling attack is well-balanced and packed with experience, making them difficult to score off if you’ve already lost a couple of wickets. I expect another hammering from the Sixers yet again, however if Mohammad Nabi, Dan Christian or Cameron White can get going for the Renegades then it will truly be game on!

Haha yes spot on mate! Definitely a lacklustre game. But being a Renegades fan I'm pretty chuffed we won this game convincingly after being demolished by the Sixers at Marvel Stadium in December! Nice bit of BBL revenge for the Renegades tonight.

Well after copping a hiding from the Sydney Sixers at Marvel Stadium, the Melbourne Renegades have come full circle and delivered a thumping themselves on Henriques’ young side at the SCG. Cruising to an easy 7 wicket victory with a whopping 42 balls remaining, the Melbourne Renegades have shot up to the second place on the BBL ladder and have pushed the Sixers down to fifth, their monstrous win paying dividends for their net run rate. For the Sydney Sixers, they will need to revisit their batting order and select a better combination for their next clash, as they posted a paltry 115 with wickets tumbling at regular intervals in their innings. Their score was never going to be enough to seriously challenge the Renegades with skipper Tom Cooper and ‘keeper Sam Harper making light work of the run-chase. Sending in the Sixers to bat after winning the bat flip, the Renegades immediately executed their plans in derailing the home team’s innings. David Hughes was the first to go, falling to Richardson for a seven-ball duck which seemed to set the tone for the rest of his side. Vince departed at the end of the third over, dragging a wide fuller ball onto his stumps. From there it was just a procession of dismissals, as none of the Sixers’ batsmen, apart from English superstar Tom Curran could overcome the stranglehold applied by the Renegades’ tight bowling. Curran was brilliant with the bat, top scoring for his side with a well-made 44 off 30 balls, featuring two fours and three sixes. His knock allowed some degree of respectability to the team score, after it looked at one stage they would not reach triple figures at all. Mohammad Nabi’s innocuous offspinners proved to be quite useful, as the Afghan veteran bagged four for 25 in cleaning up the Sixers’ lower order. The run-chase for the Renegades proved to a pedestrian affair, the early wicket of Marcus Harris being the only ray of hope for the Sixers in making any serious inroads into winning this game. Cooper, Harper, White and Mohammad Nabi’s final ball six proved this wouldn’t be the case.

Very few things more boring than a lopsided t20 game.

O’Keefe to Nabi SIX Seals it with a maximum! Nabi launches his first ball high and handsome over the extra-cover boundary to secure an emphatic victory for the Renegades. They win the game in just 13 overs! This will do wonders for the Renegades’ net run rate. Overs 13 Renegades 3/116

Abbott to White Dropped! Cameron White attempts to launch this over mid-on, instead top edges it high into the sky and Edwards drops a sitter at mid on! This is a game to forget for the Sixers tonight. Overs 11.4 Renegades 2/101

O’Keefe to Harper Ohhh! Almost a repeat dismissal to Cooper’s one! Harper miscues the drive as the ball deflects just past the stumps to the leg side. Great exhibition of left arm spin bowling from O’Keefe here. Overs 11 Renegades 2/92

O’Keefe to Harper Nicely bowled. Beautifully flighted delivery, the slowness of it makes Harper stop his charge and is forced to defend it back to the bowler. Overs 10.4 Renegades 2/92

O’Keefe to Cooper WICKET Bowled him! Cooper misses out on his 50. Nice ball from O’Keefe, flighted, slower, it doesn’t spin, lands on middle and leg and goes on with the arm. Cooper goes for the charge, misses it completely and sees the ball clip the top of leg stump. Good innings from him though, the Renegades are just a couple of shots away from reaching home. Overs 10.2 Renegades 2/91
