A busy period of the BBL season begins tonight for the Brisbane Heat as they attempt to climb off the bottom of the table when they play the Sydney Thunder at Homebush.
Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:15pm (AEDT).
After playing just four games over the first 19 days of the competition, the Heat now face a run which is likely to decide whether they will be playing finals cricket or not.
With five games in the next 12 days and just two of them at home, they will be doing a lot of travel and the squad will get a proper workout.
It could work well for the Heat if they can make a good start and get some momentum rolling, with the squad clearly struggling to find a rhythm over their first four games, having just the single win on the board.
It leaves them at the wrong end of the ladder and only ahead of the hapless Perth Scorchers on net run rate, but with ten games still to play, their finals charge is well and truly alive if they can come away from the next fortnight with some big wins.
After tough losses to the Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers to start their season, the Heat finally picked up their first win over the Scorchers last time out, and it was clear the difference came with the bat.
Their first three games saw low totals and big guns Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum unable to spark anything from the line-up. While they were only chasing 135 against the Scorchers, they got there comfortably in the end with contributions all through the order.
On the other side, the Thunder had started their season positively enough, winning their first two, but the deficiencies within the squad were laid bare when they lost to the Hurricanes and Strikers on New Year’s Eve.
The loss to the Strikers was particularly worrying, with their lack of death bowling a major talking point. However, with Fawad Ahmed and Jos Buttler in fine form, they hit back to beat the Scorchers, before losing to the Stars last time out to ensure their record was 50-50.
Home games in the BBL are crucial, so the Thunder must win here, but the Spotless Stadium pitch is a talking point in itself, with runs hard to come by – which, to be fair, benifits the Thunder, who for the most part would prefer to play low-scoring games.
Prediction
Even on the road, this is a crucial game for the Heat. I reckon Lynn has a big one and they get the job done.

GAME ABANDONED - BRISBANE HEAT WIN BY 15 RUNS (D/L METHOD) Well, that's the. The Brisbane Heat win this one over the Sydney Thunder as the rain continues to hammer down at Spotless Stadium. As it turns out, if the rain had of hit about 2 or 3 minutes earlier, the game would have been a no result, but it didn't the Heat got their overs in, grabbed some wickets and the D/L par score blew out of the water for the Thunder. They would have needed to be 49 off their 5.3 overs, and to be fair, they didn't really push all that hard, with the weather clearly not worrying them. Earlier, the Heat ran up 186, which would have been tough to chase anyway, with Max Bryant, Brendon McCullum and Chris Lynn the three main men with the stick. For the Heat, that's their second win of the season. Brisbane Heat: 8/186 (20) Sydney Thunder: 2/34 (5.3)

Raining heavily now. Umbrellas out in the middle and this isn't a great deal of fun for anyone.

There we go. Latest time to restart is 10:25pm (AEDT). That’s about 50 minutes from now.

Bugger, was looking like a good game. Haven't had many big chases this season yet.

Not sure. My understanding of the rules for BBL is that there is no make-up time and four minutes per over. That being said, we have 14 overs to go - so, about 56 minutes from the delay. My best guess would be that the latest restart would be 10:20pm, allowing for three more balls. Looks pretty unlikely.

Full square covered here. There is some pretty heavy rain in this, but it's more that if the radar continues to move as it is, we have more than an hour, maybe two on the way.

What's the latest they can stay off mate?

So, covers going down here and with so much on radar, I'll have more updates as they come, but more play looks unlikely.
Scott Pryde

My understanding is that the Thunder would need to be on 50 being 2 wickets down right now to have the victory on D/L method if we were to have no more play. As it stands, they are 16 short of that target.

RAIN DELAY That's it. The umpires have send the players from the ground with this rain getting heavier. There is at least an hours worth coming on radar. Some heavy stuff as well. Heat well ahead on Duckworth Lewis.

That rain is getting heavy now.
