The Sydney derby will be the eighth game of the Big Bash League this season, with the Sydney Showground Stadium in Sydney to be the host of this encounter. The eighth match of the tournament will begin at 7:15pm AEDT and you can follow it live with The Roar below.

It’s an early chance for both teams to go two in two matches after having started off with a win apiece.

The Sixers were 17-run winners over the multiple-time champions Perth Scorchers, while a rain-affected game saw the Thunder beat Melbourne Stars by 15 runs.

For Sydney Sixers, it was down to their middle-order to perform the rescue act after Joe Denly and Jack Edwards had fallen cheaply.

It took 60s from Daniel Hughes and Jordan Silk to propel them to what looked like a fighting score of 4/164 from their 20 overs against Perth.

The pair was involved in a 124-run stand, one broken only in the final over having come together in the Powerplay.

Once they had got to that total, it was down to the experienced duo of Steve O’Keefe (3/19) and Sean Abbott (3/29) to break the Scorchers back.

What was interesting to watch was that the spin of O’Keefe grabbed the first three wickets while Abbott returned to knock the middle-order out.

Despite Ashton Turner and Hilton Cartwright’s 99-run stand, the Sixers bowling persisted with their plans and got the better of Perth.

Sydney Thunder deserved the luck that came their way after their game was hit by rain. They raked up 5/181 in their 20 overs despite the start they got – they were three down in the eighth over for 59.

All of Shane Watson, Jos Buttler and Callum Ferguson, three top batsmen in this format, had returned back to the dugout by this time.

It was left to the classy-looking Jason Sangha to bail them out of trouble in the company of the hard-hitting Daniel Sams.

Sangha made an unbeaten 63, and while Sams was given let-offs on multiple occasions, he made full use of them to smash a 21-ball 34.

This was followed by Sams picking up a three-fer while Sam Rainbird and Chris Green conceded six apiece in the one over their bowled in a rain-shortened game.

It will be interesting to see how they go about their business in a full game.

In the 13 games played between these two sides, the Sydney Sixers have won nine and lost just four of them.

Interestingly, the Sixers have won their previous five matches against the Thunder and will look to make it their sixth in a row.

Prediction
Sydney Sixers should out-bowl the Thunder and win this one.

Buttler's knock of 63 set the Thunder up to 9/169, and despite looking to get to 185 at one stage before collapsing they had enough. And that's thanks to Fawad Ahmed, who continues his good form, bagging three-fer. With this the Thunder also join the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades tor the top of the table with two from two. The Renegades are at the top on NRR. BBL and Test cricket action continues on December 26 with the Boxing Day Test followed by Perth hosting the Sixers. Merry Christmas!

That's that then, end of the game. Thunder have beaten Sixers by 21 runs.

Bowled him. Sams bowls a yorker and that's gone through SOK. The game was already gone and Steve O'Keefe was looking to squeeze it through the covers. Missed. Bowled.

Sean Abbott out! c. Ferguson b. Sams scoring 35 (28) for Sydney Sixers

Gone, Abbott falls too. Slower ball from Sams and hit it in the air and caught, with some difficulty, at long-off. Seven down.

Tom Curran out! c. Cook b. Green scoring 62 (40) for Sydney Sixers

Yorkers galore before a wide ball outside the off, Curran goes for a whack and holes out to long-off. Just seven from the over and a very important wicket. 26 needed from an over.

A good start from Green, he's bowling quick and flat and very full. A single and a couple of twos off the first three balls before another yorker follows off which they get just one. Again, just one off the fifth ball, before Curran falls off the last. What an over.

Tension is mounting for the Thunder. They know they are still on top given one wicket here will change things around but 37 needed from 14 is suddenly looking more achievable than earlier. A dot follows, but a nice tap through extra-cover makes it 17 from the over and they now need 33 from 12. This is on!

Boom, another six. Curran has followed up a good bowling effort with a solid innings here. He has moved up to 47... ...and then a four squeezed through third-man to bring up his 50! His highest T20 score too. Just 33 balls. 39 needed from 15.

10 off the first three balls and three from the final three allows them a bit of luxury but they still needed the rate of more than 16. 50 needed off 18.

Ooh, nice! Six! Abbott has just tonked Fawad Ahmed over long-on for a biggie. That's gone to the roof, and they might need a new one. Four other runs from the first two balls to make it 10 from the first three balls. 53 off 21 needed.

A good, crunching shot through backward point for a four for Curran and 10 off that over. Again, not enough given the required-rate. 6/107 in 16.

Chris Green concedes a boundary, squeezed through short third-man but unfortunately for the Sixers, they have taken just two singles otherwise. 6/97 in 15. 73 needed from 30.

Abbott and Curran are doing their best, they can hit the long ball too but this is getting steeper by the ball. 13 an over or so needed. Eight from the Rainbird over including a dropped catch off his bowling. Tough one. 79 needed from 36.

Appeal for stumping. Abbtt was looking to hit it inside out and misses. Buttler is quick enough to whip the stumps but he's just made it back. Six from that over. 6/83 in 13.

Bad ball from Chris Green, short, on the leg-side and pulled over the fine-leg region. Easy pickings. 6/82 in the 13th

Nine from the McAndrew over, with Abbott helping himself to a four, a pull through to fine-leg. 6/77 in 12.

McAndrew has come into the attack now that Cook's done with his bowling.
