Singapore Grand Prix: Formula One live blog, updates

By Jawad Yaqub / Roar Guru

Formula One returns to the road after the conclusion of the European leg of the championship, as the demanding streets of the Marina Bay welcome the drivers for another tough Singapore Grand Prix. Join The Roar for live updates and coverage from 10pm (AEST).

The 5km concrete jungle is a unique challenge on the calendar, not just for being a street circuit, but being one of the longest races in the season – with sweltering temperatures even in the night a test of the driver’s endurance.

61-laps often do run to the allotted two-hours, because multiple Safety Cars are always called into action during the chaos that ensues.

Only Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel from the current grid of drivers have won this race, both vying for the most outright victories – currently tied at four apiece. The last two have been won by Hamilton.

Though with the past two races this year having been won by Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, the question has been whether the Scuderia will be fast enough to fight Mercedes AMG and Red Bull in Singapore.

Leclerc claimed his third consecutive pole position by only a tenth of a second over Hamilton, who denied Ferrari a front-row lockout with Vettel having been relegated to third.

The midfield was led by McLaren during qualifying, with Carlos Sainz set to start ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg. Teammate Lando Norris rounded out in the top ten also.

Despite this being a street circuit, overtaking isn’t as difficult as say in Monaco and a third DRS zone this year will make present further opportunities for drivers to pass.

Even the run into Turn 1 is always a short, but exciting one given the limited chances for drivers to make any gains at the start. The chaotic start of 2017 which saw both Ferraris crash into each other and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen is a classic example.

So while this is a grand prix, it might as well be a proper endurance race given the multiple variables in deciding the outcome.

Will this year see Mercedes’ streak in Singapore beaten and possibly witness Leclerc make it an unprecedented hattrick of wins?
Can the out of form Vettel make a statement of intent and show that he is still the top dog at Ferrari?

There is much to be answered, so tune in on The Roar from 10pm (AEST0 for live blog coverage of another showdown on the streets of Marina Bay at the Singapore Grand Prix.

RACE REPORT It was poised to be a race where Mercedes would have the upper hand, though Ferrari were the ones who dominated the Singapore Grand Prix – claiming a one-two finish with Sebastian Vettel claiming his first victory in 392-days. Though it didn’t come without some controversy for Ferrari, who’s strategy ultimately favoured Vettel over the pole sitting Charles Leclerc, who had led away in the early stages of the race. Vettel made his pit-stop on Lap-20 with the intention to undercut the likes of Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton who was a threat for the win. The German achieved this, when his teammate pitted a lap later and came out behind him. There were bizarre scenes at Mercedes though, who seemed flustered by Ferrari’s pit-stops and couldn’t respond immediately. As a result, Valtteri Bottas who pitted on Lap-23 was hung out to dry again – until Hamilton stopped on Lap-27. With cars on alternative strategies now leading the race, such as Antonio Giovinazzi, Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll, only being held up would’ve compromised Ferrari’s race against Mercedes – which turned out not to be the case. Leclerc was noticeably vocal in regard to the strategy decision made by his team, though was rational enough to not try and make any late moves on his teammate en route to second. A flurry of late Safety Car appearances slowed down the pace of the race, with the first being triggered by Romain Grosjean sending George Russell into the wall on Lap-36, then a mechanical failure for Sergio Perez and finally contact between Kimi Räikkönen and Daniil Kvyat. This allowed Hamilton in the dying stages of the race to challenge Max Verstappen for the final place on the podium, which ultimately the Red Bull was able to retain. Behind them were their respective teammates in Valtteri Bottas and Alexander Albon. Best of the rest in seventh was Lando Norris, who vindicated a strong weekend for McLaren once again, while his teammate Carlos Sainz was involved in a first lap incident which ruined his race. Close battles were scattered right throughout the middle and the rear of the field, but it was Gasly, Nico Hulkenberg and Giovinazzi that rounded out the points – with the Haas cars missing out, as well as Stroll.

SEBASTIAN VETTEL WINS THE SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX! The drought is broken for Vettel and Ferrari claim a one-two finish with Charles Leclerc finishing second. And great defence from Max Verstappen at the end of the race, sees him hold off Lewis Hamilton for third.

Lap 60/61: Max calling for more power in his Red Bull, as the Dutchman is struggling to keep ahead of Hamilton - who instead has plenty of power in that Mercedes of his. Magnussen now the holder of the fastest lap, even though he is last in P17 and that means he won't score the extra point either as you've got to finish inside the top ten.

Lap 59/61: 3 LAPS TO GO Bottas now sets the fastest lap of the race with a 1:43.534. Hamilton meanwhile is right on the tail of Verstappen too, as it is now or never to make a move for the podium.

Lap 58/61: Vettel has stretched away from Leclerc, while Hamilton remains within a second of Verstappen. The Mercedes doesn't really seem like it is threatening the Red Bull though.

Lap 56/61: Fastest lap of the race from Vettel with a 1:44.943 and that also would at this stage get him an extra championship point. Hamilton within DRS range too of Verstappen ahead.
