USA Grand Prix: Formula One results

By Jawad Yaqub / Roar Guru

Following a tense finish to last week’s Mexican Grand Prix, Formula One has quickly moved up the continent and into the United States of America – to Austin, Texas for the third-to-last round of the 2019 championship. Join The Roar for a live blog from 6:10am AEDT.

Despite a comprehensive victory in Mexico, Lewis Hamilton still requires four points over his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas to clinch his sixth world championship, which he now can do in Austin.

The Circuit of the Americas is a 5.5km mishmash of some of the best circuits in the world, combining high-downforce sections as in the first and third sectors, with the long straights like in Sector 2.

It’s a 56-lap grand prix across the bumpy asphalt and with unprecedented cold temperatures across the weekend, there is a chance that this creates trouble with tyre performance during the race. But as seen in Mexico, teams may not shy away from using the hard tyre for a one-stop strategy.

While Hamilton is the one who has had great success in the United States, including four consecutive wins from 2014 in Texas, it was Bottas who claimed pole position for the race – leaving the Briton in fifth.

Sebastian Vettel completed the front-row, while Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc make up the second row of the grid ahead of Hamilton and all set to start the race on the medium tyre.

In the battle of the midfield, Renault will start a lot closer to McLaren who again occupy the fourth row headed by Carlos Sainz – who will contest his 100th grand prix, along with Verstappen and Kevin Magnussen.

Daniel Ricciardo starts from inside the top ten, while Renault teammate Nico Hulkenberg will have a free choice of starting tyre from eleventh – to give the team strategy options.

American team Haas faces another difficult race, struggling still with their tyre wear during the race. There is little chance that either Magnussen or Romain Grosjean will feature in the points.

With the race being wide open across the top six drivers, it all appears that it’ll come down to who’s quickest with their strategy calls to get the crucial track position. This is something that Ferrari haven’t done in recent races – despite being quicker than Mercedes.

Tune in then on The Roar from 6:10am AEDT for live blog coverage of the United States Grand Prix, as we see if only the second ever six-time world champion will be crowned in Formula One.

Sorry to disappoint Jawad but things are a little busy over here as I go back to sixth form after the half term holidays so it is unlikely that I'll write a report. :unhappy: I hope to be back in action for the Brazilian Grand Prix!

So there it is then folks, Lewis Hamilton is a six-time F1 world champion. An achievement that may not sink in just yet, but eventually it will realised the greatness of the Briton in Formula One and world sport. There is still two races to go as well in the 2019 season, so please join me again in two week's time for Brazilian Grand Prix, but for the US GP and Hamilton's sixth title - thanks for joining me here on The Roar and have a good day.

Thanks for your input too Josh, I look forward to reading your follow up to the race. There could still be a fight in 2020 to look forward to, but it's all down to Ferrari and Red Bull now to step up to the plate. Have a good night over there!

RACE REPORT On the day that the championship was set to be decided and Lewis Hamilton to be crowned a six-time Formula One world champion, it was his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas who claimed a sensational win at the United States Grand Prix. Strategy played its hand in proceedings once again, as Hamilton after a strong start from fifth found himself leading the race from Lap 15 – when Bottas pitted in response to Max Verstappen. Newly crowned six-time champion Hamilton then proceeded on a one-stop strategy, though his hard tyres did fall away at the end of the race, allowing Bottas and Verstappen to close. Pole sitter Bottas was on a two-stop strategy and with the medium tyres at the end of the race went wheel-to-wheel with his Mercedes teammate, before passing the world champion on Lap 52 – en route to his fourth win of 2019. Verstappen on fresher tyres also had the opportunity to overhaul Hamilton, though a late double-waved yellow flags caused by the beached Haas of Kevin Magnussen, denied the Red Bull a chance for second. It was a miserable race for Ferrari, with Sebastian Vettel retiring on Lap 8 with a spectacular suspension failure. Charles Leclerc also had no pace in response to Mercedes and Verstappen, finishing a lonely fourth after another bungled pit-stop on Lap 43. Alexander Albon came to blows with Carlos Sainz on the first lap and had to then put in a recovery drive, which included three pit-stops en route to fifth to keep his record of top six finishes since joining Red Bull. Sainz and McLaren teammate Lando Norris still finished in the points, though were beaten also by Daniel Ricciardo who again made a one-stop strategy work to score points for Renault in sixth. It was double-points for Renault, with Nico Hulkenberg finishing ninth and getting a reprieve from Toro Rosso in the constructor’s championship – after the Red Bull junior team failed to score points. A final lap collision between Daniil Kvyat and Sergio Perez, for which Kvyat was penalised 5-seconds post-race, saw Perez drop back though was promoted back to tenth – after his pit-lane start and making a one-stop strategy work. Hamilton’s sixth world championship now puts him one behind the great Michael Schumacher’s all-time tally of seven in Formula One, with the Briton also 5 race wins away from equalling Schumacher’s record of 91.

And now he has the chance to equal the great Michael Schumacher, which would be an incredible achievement for him.

The world champion has pulled up in his specially reserved parking place in Parc Ferme. Still kind of feels surreal that we have a new six-time Formula One world champion, only the second driver to do so in the sport's illustrious history.

I'm no Hamilton fan but you do have to sit back and reflect on what a great career this man has had. Yes, he's had the luck of some good machinery but there has still had to been hard work put in so that it could happen. Again, congratulations to Lewis.
