Caulfield Stakes: Spring Racing Carnival live blog

By Stuart Thomas / Expert

The Caulfield Stakes is one of the best weight for age contests in the land and has $1 million prize pool to be shared as the spoils. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:35pm (AEDT).

With horses eyeing off different upcoming races and with weight for age providing a different challenge to the handicap conditions they will face in them, some of these might struggle over the 2,000 metres.

Chris Waller arrives, confident with D’Argento and gets a kilogram on some of the other key contenders.

Blair House is a little unproven on Australian soil and that will be the key question for it in this race, whilst Night’s Watch might be one of those who suffers under the weight.

Humidor comes off victory in the Memsie Stakes and a solid run in the Underwood that both suggest he is in good form and a real chance in this one.

Benbatl draws well in one and could be thereabouts for Saeed Bin Suroor. Aidan O’Brien’s runner The Cliffsofmoher is also something of a hope if international form is anything to go by.

Waller’s second runner in the race Unforgotten gets in with only 56 kilograms and is a hot tip leading into the race.

Homesman isn’t without a hope after a surprising win in the Underwood Stakes and should be fitter for the run.

It looks to be one of the toughest betting races of the day with 5/1 looking like a possible starting price for the favourite, whichever horse that ends up being.

Prediction
Humidor is class, yet will be challenged by D’Argento with James McDonald on board.

Unforgotten could scare the heck out of them all with its weight and there probably won’t be a clear winner until the race enters its final moments.

A cracking contest with some international mystery runners to add to the intrigue.

Benbatl has won the 2018 Caulfield Stakes in a close finish with Blair House Godlphin does it again and their horse just battled on true to its name. Pat Cosgrave rode it a treat and claims his first winner in Australia. Blair House is similarly owned and James Doyle fought hard down the straight but couldn't get to the lead as Benbatl held on gamely. Humidor finished third despite not really featuring in the finish and The Cliffsofmoher ran home well for fourth after being at the tail of the field midway through the race. Both horses will now look to the Cox Plate in a fortnight and a crack at Winx, with the opportunity to destroy her perfect record. Final Result 1/ Benbatl 2/ Blair House 3/ Humidor 4/ The Cliffsofmoher Thanks for being here for the call and join me at 5.15 pm (AEDST) for the final Group one of the day when the Caulfield Guiness is run and won.

D'argento has come in from 7 dollars to around 5. It looks to be the one the punters want.

Benbatl is a fascinating runner for Godolphin and Humidor looks one of the class runners in the race.

Chris Waller is taking on the internationals here. he has two of the favourites in Unforgotten and D'argento, whilst the late money appears to be coming for the latter.
