Thousand Guineas: Spring Carnival Racing live blog

By Stuart Thomas / Expert

The Thousand Guineas at Caulfield is one of the premier races for three year-old fillies during the Spring Carnival. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:10pm (AEDT).

With $500,000 on the line, the Thousand Guineas is a lucrative event for the girls, with quality such as Miss Finland and Allinghi on the honour roll.

Run over the traditional mile at set weights, the race produces a quality winner on most occasions and should do so again this year.

Smart Melody appears a firm favourite for the race after a perfect start to her career with five straight wins.

Fiesta does look a danger after consistent form in Sydney, as does El Dorado Dreaming who should be fitter after her run in the Prelude.

Thrillster cannot be discounted with a 100 per cent place strike rate in her career and Amphitrite has the ability to contend, yet will need a little luck from her barrier in order to work into the race.

The speed map suggests Smart Melody will not be under manic pressure and that the race could fall her way if she is indeed permitted to wind up slowly after settling in a nice position.

There will be some money for Krone and Anjana but the top four look destined to fight this one out.

PreThree-year-oldg>
Three year old Group One races can sometimes throw a spanner into the works in terms of punting and I have a feeling this race might be a little less predictable than some think.

Despite Smart Melody sitting pretty in gate two, Fiesta lands right outside her and along with Thrillster in eight, could cause an upset over the short priced favourite.

Amphritite has won the 2018 Thousand Guineas Trainer Darren Weir has presented a beautiful horse today and despite Smart Melody holding favouritism, Craig Williams has piloted the horse to a stunning victory; hitting the line at extraordinary speed. The favourite and Thrillster led for much of the race, before Fundamentalist looked the winner with Luke Nolan on board, after jumping to the lead with the post nearing. From deep in the field Amphritite was winding up and flew home as the widest runner to claim the first group one of the afternoon. The photo for third showed Seabrook to have run third and Anjana managed to finish fourth. With both early leader slipping outside the placing. Final Result 1/ Amphritite 2/ Fundamentalist 3/ Seabrook 4/ Anjana Thanks for being on board for the race and be sure you join me for the Toorak Handicap at 3.45 pm (AEDST)

As Thrillster and Smart Melody whacked away over the last 200. Amphritite swept them all down the outside after Fundamentalist looked the winner with 100 to go.

What a ride from Craig Williams, superbly ridden. Fudamentalist will run second and it is a photo for third.

Smart Melody still solid in the market. The punters are pretty confident.

The track is a Good 4 and looks to have played fairly so far in the day. Both leaders and latecomers should have a chance on this surface.

I'll endeavour to keep you abreast of any late market moves. El Dorado Dreaming looks a treat on the way to the barriers. Most of the fillies look good in fact.
