Thrilling finish sees Trap for Fools hold on for 2018 Mackinnon Stakes victory

Not for the first time this Spring Carnival, jockey John Allen has steered home the winner, helping Trap for Fools hold on in a thrilling finish to the Mackinnon Stakes.

The biggest race of the day saw a fitting conclusion, with the Jarrod McLean-trained Trap for Fools, and fellow racer Latrobe duking it out over the final two metres.

2018 Victoria Derby winner Extra Brut finished narrowly behind the pair, claiming third-place.

Interestingly, Allen had been the jockey who had guided Extra Brut to the first Victoria Derby victory of trainer Darren Weir’s career.

Allen hadn’t previously ridden Trap for Fools in a competitive race.

“Look, you need a bit of luck in this game, and I was lucky enough to get on him today,” Allen told Channel Seven.

Wanted to back either Latrobe or Extra Brut but the bookie was too tight, so backed Trap for Fools instead based on the trainer with a bonus bet. Must now turn over the winnings to get my money!
