The NRL All Stars game is back in 2019 with a revamped format as the Indigenous All Stars take take on a New Zealand Maori side at AAMI Park in what is sure to be an explosive match to kick the pre-season into gear. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEDT).

The NRL All Stars concept was last used in 2017, when the Indigenous team took on a ‘world’ team, which was more or less a farce, with only one team having anything to play for or represent.

This time around though, the Indigenous team have a worthy opponent in the New Zealand Maori, and it’s going to be passionate and fierce from whistle to siren.

Some of the best players in the game will be on display, and showing exactly how important the concept is, Latrell Mitchell has passed on a World Club Challenge trip to Wigan with the Roosters to play in this fixture.

One of the best centres in the game, he will be joined in a super team by names like Cody Walker, James Roberts, Blake Ferguson, Andrew Fifita and Tyrone Peachey.

On the other side of the park, the Maori will be led by Kalyn Ponga, with the Knights youngster lining up in the halves alongside another exciting youngster, Jahrome Hughes.

They have an exciting forward pack and will look to dominate the game that way, led by Jesse Bromwich, James Tamou and Kevin Proctor. They have experience right throughout the pack, and it’s where the game will be won and lost more than likely, with the Indigenous team having youngsters like Josh Kerr and David Fifita in the side.

If the Maori can dominate there, then you’d think Ponga and Hughes will be able to do enough for the points to flow against a defence which will fatigue, given it’s still pre-season and players aren’t at peak fitness yet.

If the Indigenous are to win, it’s going to come down to the kicking games of Walker and Tyrone Roberts. They need to control the game there, make smart decisions and build pressure through possession, territory, a mountain of repeat sets and making the most of all their opportunities.

Predicition
Hard to say which way a match like this is going to go. It’s still pre-season, but there will be plenty on the line. The Maori have the better pack though, so I’ll take them for the win.

It’ll be close and hotly-contested the whole way though.

Maori by 6.

Nah - they have had them in this fixture before. It's now allowed in regular season.

I hope those post-try interviewers with each player who scores don't become a regular feature of Channel Nine's broadcasts, give the player's a break! It's not like it adds much to the game anyway.

FULLTIME The Indigenous All Stars have won an extremely entertaining inaugural clash against the New Zealand Maori at AAMI Park in Melbourne by 20 points. The game was end to end from start to finish, but the class of the creative players for the Indigenous side got the Australian outfit over the line in the end. With passion, pride and cultures on the line, it was Dane Gagai who got the first try for the Maori, who started the game pretty strongly and looked to be the better of the two teams. Gagai would end with the game with a double - the second of which he scored in the 28th minute to tie things up again - but that's about where the fun and games ended for the New Zealand outfit. They had let in a double in just a couple of minutes to Josh Addo-Carr in between, and would go into the halftime sheds ten points down as well after Jesse Ramien set Bevan French on the path to a try, before Blake Ferguson scored and celebrated with a backflip which could have had Brad Arthur having a heart attack on his couch. The second half got underway virtually how the first half ended as David Fifita crashed over in what was an excellent performance deserving of a try, before Esan Marsters gave the Maori some hope half an hour from fulltime. Hope was all it was though as Andrew Fifita and co slammed the door shut with another couple of tries to Cody Walker and Josh Kerr in the final quarter of the match, ensuring the Indigenous could enjoy the final five minutes of action without too much stress. The other good news to report is absolutely no injuries out of the clash. Indigenous All Stars 34 New Zealand Maori 14

FULLTIME Harawira-Naera throws a pass to the pocket referee, then it's all happening. Addo-Carr takes an intercept, runs 50 metres, Peachey puts a chip kick in on the next, then it's all over as the siren goes. The Indigenous All Stars have won by 20 points, and that probably reflected their dominance in the end, with the Maori side just not having anywhere near enough in the creativity stocks to go with them. Excellent game of footy to start the season though. Loved that. No injuries to report either, so that's excellent news. Indigenous All Stars 34 New Zealand Maori 14

79' - The Maori with one last attacking chance here. For some reason it's Harawira-Naera doing the kicking. Indigenous come up with it, but then knock on, so the Maori have one last chance. Indigenous All Stars 34 New Zealand Maori 14

Just tuned in. Dear channel 9, please punt Andrew Johns and Gus Gould. Seriously awful commentary. If I hear the term “world class” again, I will explode.

77' - Ramien and Smith away from the scrum, then they come right from Roberts to Walker who is tackled. Latu up the middle, then it's right to Fifita who stops, goes, stops, goes, turns, then surrenders to the tackle. Meanwhile, Tyrone Roberts tries to kick a field goal on the last and shanks it. 76' - Well, this game is all over bar the shouting now, so just no injuries will be the key - although, here come the Indigenous again. They spread it and French is away with Addo-Carr on the inside, but the pass is knocked down by Gagai I think that was. It was a certain try. Indigenous All Stars 34 New Zealand Maori 14

74′ – TRY INDIGENOUS, JOSH KERR
The Indigenous side right on the attack.Peachey and Staggs with runs, then it’s Kerr back through the middle. They go left now from Walker to Mitchell with a floating pass, and he offloads on the inside to French who is tackled. Back to the right from Addo-Carr to David Fifita who is tackled in the middle. Peachey grubbers on the last and that’s weighted beautifully, right for Kerr who scores!

Brilliant from Peachey, great run from Kerr and the Indigenous are home now.

71' - The Indigenous side with a good set, then they force an error as the Maori bring it off their own line. You'd have to say this is just about over as a contest now, but there still might be a try or two yet. Indigenous All Stars 28 New Zealand Maori 14

69' - Sloppy pass off the scrum, but the Maori manage to hang on. Proctor up the middle, then it's Tapine cutting back across the ruck, but unable to burst through. They spread it left from Blair to Ponga and on for Marsters, but he is pulled down. Out of the line comes Latu who tackled Blair, before Ponga grubbers, but it's picked up by Walker who runs the other way. Indigenous All Stars 28 New Zealand Maori 14

68' - Approaching the final ten minutes of this one, and maybe it's not quite over. Sloppy mistake from the Indigenous side coming out of trouble. Indigenous All Stars 28 New Zealand Maori 14
