South Sydney Rabbitohs vs St George Illawarra Dragons

2020 NRL Charity Shield

Glen Willow Stadium, Mudgee
Rabbitohs Dragons
26 SCORE 12

South Sydney and St George Illawarra meet in their traditional pre-season Charity Shield clash in Mudgee. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7pm (AEDT).

In a match that effectively means little more than any other NRL trial, the Bunnies and Dragons will raise the intensity of preparations for the upcoming season in their annual hit out. With coaches exploring combinations and some players still yet to make their first appearances, NRL trials can be misleading and deceptive to read at the best of times.

However, the Charity Shield clash always delivers and this edition stands to do the same.

Latrell Mitchell will wear the cardinal and myrtle for the first time and with Dane Gagai, James Roberts and Campbell Graham forms a potentially lethal backline for Souths. New captain Adam Reynolds and Damien Cook will look to pull the strings through the centre of the park and Cameron Murray’s move into the second row will be interesting to observe.

Trent Merrin returns to the Dragons’ fold after four years away and despite the absence of enforcer James Graham, the red and whites take a solid squad into the game with Ben Hunt, Corey Norman and new recruit Issac Luke hoping to provide the spark that translates into points.

Luke takes on a huge task with Cameron McInnes unavailable for a month and if the Dragons wish to start the season well, his influence will be vitally important.

Prediction
The Rabbitohs look a more settled squad and for what tipping is worth in a trial, should win if coach Wayne Bennett does leave something like his strongest 13 on the field for the majority of the contest.

Well for the dragons I gotta say the first half was good, Lomax isn’t a fullback and wanted to see if sailor was and at half time they clocked off while Souths young guns looking for a shot played with heart got the win, however! Souths forward pack is so thin and needed an Arrow and a musgrove!

South Sydney has continued its dominance over St George-Illawarra in the Charity Shield with a 26-12 win in Mudgee. With both coaches keen to see where their squads were at just a fortnight out from the start of the NRL season, it was the Dragons who started the best, opening a 12-4 first half lead. Defensively, the red and whites were excellent and withstood many an attacking raid from the Bunnies in what was an entertaining first half, despite a considerable amount of dropped ball. Soon after the break, South’s team took a rather youthful shape and began to run riot over the Dragon’s. Four quick tries set up an unassailable lead and secured the shield for yet another year. Damien Cook and Latrell Mitchell enjoyed a breather on the bench whilst the the younger Bunnies did the job and put the Dragons to the sword. Trials are trials and mean little in terms of final scores. What matters more to the coaches are combinations, attitude and their teams remaining injury free. Both sides will take away positives from tonight’s game in all three of those areas. and will now have their minds fixed firmly on the first round of the NRL season in a fortnights time.
