Central Coast Mariners will be closing Round 17 of the A-League against the Western Sydney Wanderers in a vital clash for both clubs at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, with the game kicking off at 4:00pm (AEDT).

Central Coast Mariners were perhaps unlucky to not at least grab a point against Brisbane Roar last week. They yet again fell to a deflected goal, where this time Corey Brown tried to play a ball square across the Mariners’ goal but a deflection off Lewis Miller saw the ball squeeze just past Mark Birighitti’s near post.

This has become a trademark in recent weeks, with Kye Rowles scoring an own goal against Melbourne Victory before making it two in two against Western United.

The Mariners now sit seven points away from the top six but only two points away from eighth-placed Melbourne Victory.

The Wanderers will be playing their first game with new caretaker head coach Jean-Paul de Marigny after Markus Babbel’s sacking just under two weeks ago.

It makes it harder to predict formations and the system that the Wanderers will play, but they will likely play with an intense press and get the ball into the box as much as possible, allowing new star striker Simon Cox to shoot as many times as possible.

They have also welcomed back Tass Mourdoukoutas and Keanu Baccus from international duty with the Olyroos, while Jordan O’Doherty is back in the squad following an ACL tear.

Tarek Elrich has left the Wanderers to join Perth Glory and therefore isn’t playing this weekend’s game.

The Wanderers sit ninth on the A-League table, six points away from the top six, which limits their chances of making the top six. However, a win may see the gap reduced to as few as three points.

Prediction
Despite the Mariners’ lack of goals from open play in the recent weeks, I predict them to win 2-1 against the Wanderers, but it is a very open prediction as who knows how good the Wanderers will be under their new coach?

Match Report: The Mariners may have seen their top-six hopes fall today after a 3-1 loss to the Wanderers at home. The Wanderers controlled early stages of the game and didn’t have to wait long for an opportunity to open the scoring, with their first opportunity coming just over the thirty-second mark. Bruce Kamau played a one-two with Muller, and after a beautiful curling pass from Muller played the ball dangerously across the face of the goal. Schwegler had a few stabs but couldn’t put a shot away and the Mariners blocked both attempts from Schwegler before clearing the ball. The Wanderers continued their early domination, winning multiple freekicks and corners but struggled to create any clear-cut chances following the early effort from Schwegler. The first goal came just shy of the fortieth minute after the Mariners failed to play the ball out from the back. A lacklustre pass from Jack Clisby only found the on-rushing Bruce Kamau, who quickly tapped it to Muller who made no mistake with the finish, bending the ball low into the bottom left-hand corner. In the sixty-third minute, the Wanderers had a golden chance to double their lead following a great cutback from Nikolai Muller, but Mitch Duke’s powerful shot from point-blank range only found the head of Birighitti, who managed to play on following treatment from the Mariners physio. However, the Wanderers did double their lead in the 75th minute, following a cheeky Panenka penalty from Mitch Duke. However, Matt Simon responded, winning a penalty before blasting it into the bottom hand corner, cutting the Wanderers lead in half. Daniel Lopar made a wonderful save following a Lewis Miller cross from the right finding Dylan Ruiz-Diaz, the late substitute, who was lurking at the back post but Lopar just managed to get a hand to it. The Wanderers marched on and found a third goal thanks to some great interplay between Mo Adam and Nikolai Muller, and debutant Simon Cox made no mistake in grabbing a goal on debut. Both teams face their local rivals next week, with the Mariners facing Newcastle Jets and the Wanderers facing Sydney FC. Final score: Central Coast Mariners 1, Western Sydney Wanderers 3
