Central Coast Mariners will be closing Round 17 of the A-League against the Western Sydney Wanderers in a vital clash for both clubs at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, with the game kicking off at 4:00pm (AEDT).

Central Coast Mariners were perhaps unlucky to not at least grab a point against Brisbane Roar last week. They yet again fell to a deflected goal, where this time Corey Brown tried to play a ball square across the Mariners’ goal but a deflection off Lewis Miller saw the ball squeeze just past Mark Birighitti’s near post.

This has become a trademark in recent weeks, with Kye Rowles scoring an own goal against Melbourne Victory before making it two in two against Western United.

The Mariners now sit seven points away from the top six but only two points away from eighth-placed Melbourne Victory.

The Wanderers will be playing their first game with new caretaker head coach Jean-Paul de Marigny after Markus Babbel’s sacking just under two weeks ago.

It makes it harder to predict formations and the system that the Wanderers will play, but they will likely play with an intense press and get the ball into the box as much as possible, allowing new star striker Simon Cox to shoot as many times as possible.

They have also welcomed back Tass Mourdoukoutas and Keanu Baccus from international duty with the Olyroos, while Jordan O’Doherty is back in the squad following an ACL tear.

Tarek Elrich has left the Wanderers to join Perth Glory and therefore isn’t playing this weekend’s game.

The Wanderers sit ninth on the A-League table, six points away from the top six, which limits their chances of making the top six. However, a win may see the gap reduced to as few as three points.

Prediction
Despite the Mariners’ lack of goals from open play in the recent weeks, I predict them to win 2-1 against the Wanderers, but it is a very open prediction as who knows how good the Wanderers will be under their new coach?
