Match preview:

We head to AAMI Park, Melbourne, as Melbourne City return to the comforts of home after their stunning mid-week loss to the Mariners, to face an opponent at the other end of the table, Perth Glory. Join The Roar from 7:50pm (AEDT) for live scores and blog of the game.

So Melbourne City drew the short straw, and ended up being the first team to lose to Central Coast this season. Who saw that coming?

Certainly not this writer, who tipped a 2-nil win to City.

Perhaps more importantly, how does City bounce back from that result? There is no better test after losing to the bottom, than coming up against the top.

The difference mid-week was City’s defence. The team that has only conceded ten goals across 12 rounds leaked two in the one game to the team running last.

This week becomes even bigger for City, who would have been hoping to cut the gap to Perth by six points including the Mariners game, instead finding themselves trying to keep Wellington at bay, who are snapping at the heels.

The key for City, not just getting that water-tight defence clicking again, but also how their attacking half recovers from a sapping game in the heat on Wednesday.

Perth come to Melbourne riding high atop the table, but certainly running by the seat of their pants in respect of luck.

Coming back against the likes of Brisbane and the Wanderers is all good and well, but you can’t be expecting to hope that game plan works against top-six opponents.

Tony Popovic will be reminding his charges that in order to win a championship, they cannot give their opponents a look-in, and he will be hoping that Perth can put in more of a 90-minute performance.

It won’t be easy for Perth either, at AAMI Park, where Melbourne have only lost one of their last 10 matches.

Prediction
It is hard to tip City at home, having lost to the Mariners and coming off a three-day break – but equally, Perth aren’t popping at the moment, and you just don’t know what they will deliver.

I think each team’s uncertainty cancels each other out, so the spoils should be shared.

2-all draw

In answer to your question Nick, whether they can or they can't, in this instance, they should.

COMMENTARY HIGHLIGHTS PACKAGE - PRE-MATCH Anyway, we’ve got a cracker tonight – let’s look at some line ups. EARLY SIGNS OF WHAT WAS TO COME 6‘ – So it’s a tepid start to the game … both teams just feeling each other out to start things off? OPENING STAGES 16‘ – Well, to paraphrase the Joke in the 1989 Batman: this game needs an enema. COUPLE OF MINUTES LATER 18‘ – 40 m pass to the keeper. Ned: life’s too short for a pass like that. Ned was right last week, and he’s spot on again today. FASHION REPORT 22‘ – Popovic looking on in his stunning black suit, white shirt, no-tie combo. BACK TO THE "ACTION" 28‘ – City with some more possession, but they comically kick it out with a pass that was nowhere near its target. Now Perth try to mount a charge. They do not. A MINUTE LATER 29‘ – Can someone please, please, please score a goal? I don’t even care who at this stage. City, again, linking passes along the back. MORE OF THE SAME 33‘ – I’m sure for Perth and City fans, the passing around and tight contest is thrilling, but for the neutral observer, it is far from exciting stuff. EVEN MORE OF THE SAME 35‘ – Perth try to control possession here, lots of little passes around, and eventually, they go nowhere, and City take over. It’s just been that kind of evening. All foreplay, no finish. BEFORE THE BREAK 40‘ – Perfect little example of this game as a whole: Perth with lots of intricate passing, but the final killer pass amounts to little, and the opponents get a goal kick. Watching this is like death by a thousand passes. TIME FOR A COFFEE Referee does us all a favour and calls half time. Well, that was pretty tame stuff to be honest. Here’s hoping that these guys get a roasting at half time, and come out with a bit of fire. See you in ten minutes. I’m off to have a coffee to try and wake up. UNDERWAY AGAIN 50‘ – Chianese with some solid forward pressure, and City with a defensive throw in. Perth clean up at the back, but blast it out. City with some more attacking to do, so they pass back into their own half. THIS MATCH IS GETTING PREDICTABLE... 53‘ – If you don’t hear from me for a while, you can safely assume that one of these teams has been passing it around at the back, and blasting it long in hope. Oh, and then a goal kick, just for good measure. SURPRISE! 57‘ – Ball into the City backline, the long ball is chased by Wales, and – SURPRISE SURPRISE – goal kick Perth. ARE WE THERE YET? 62‘ – The commentators are playing word games with players’ names. It’s that sort of game. ARE WE THERE YET? 76‘ – Perth passing around at the back – I know, something different! I think La Rocca will come on for City shortly. PONDERING THE DEFENSIVE PASSING STATS 79‘ – Keogh down for another trailing boot – I’m not going to comment. City back on the ball though, lots of passing at the back. I want to see a stat on defenders passing tonight. EVEN MORE INTERESTED IN BACK PASSING STATS 81‘ – Perth pass through the backline, and with ten minutes to go, I’m quietly confident about my tip of the draw. I’d also like to see a stat about passes going backwards tonight. HOORAY, THE MASCOTS GET ON TV! 81‘ – The mascots, despite the painted on smiles, look bored. IT'S ALL HAPPENING AT AAMI PARK NOW Best Chance of the Game 82‘ – And that was Perth’s chance! Castro puts Keogh through, who shoots – Galekovic saves – and the scraps are with Davidson, who strikes, and it is so high it’s almost OUT OF the stadium! That was the moment folks. NO PRESSURE THEN 88‘ – Well, Perth certainly look the most likely of the two sides to score, that’s for sure. Reddy with the ball, but absolutely no City pressure to speak of. GOAL KICK #6,837 87‘ – Keogh eventually with a cross that, and you guessed right, is out for a goal kick. Castro looks annoyed, and lets Keogh know exactly that. ARE WE THERE YET? 89‘ – Credit to Keogh, he pressures Brattan on the ball, and earns a throw in. Perth, however, can do little with the extra option, and City send the long ball long. Hard to watch, harder to describe really. OFFSIDE? THAT'S A NEW ONE 91‘ – Lachy Wales runs onto a through ball. What a shame he’s 17km offside. ARE WE THERE YET? 92‘ – Davidson with all the time in the world – he could have requested a written report telling him where to cross – and he kicks into the marker. Davidson tries to clean up his effort, and that will be a City throw in. LOST BALL 93‘ – Perth on the counter, but Schenkeveld breaks down the through ball. Jamieson and McGree link up, here’s Baccus! And he can only lose the ball. I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION 93‘ – Even a late winner here would be a letdown. Castro takes his time, and it’s wide to Neville. Corner Perth. MAKE IT STOP! 94‘ – We are into what I truly hope is the final minute. Kilkenny will send in the cross. WHEN WILL IT END? 95‘ – Oh no, Poppa with one more sub, as Castro comes off for Brimmer. I’m just annoyed that the substitution means there is even more of this game. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! 96‘ – Baccus with a hit and hope, and Reddy takes it. Can you please just blow the whistle ref and end this?! THIS IS THE END, MY ONLY FRIEND, THE END And thank the Lord, that is over. POST MATCH I have never hated commentating on a game that much in my life. - QUESTION Can FFA deduct points from both clubs for bringing the sport into disrepute for that?

Wow, what can I say. Membership good value tonight hey? Highlight for me was Wazza getting booed by home supporters when his image appeared on the screen. Last time the club made sure Bruno’s image was cut short from the screen lest supporters riot. Now it’ll be Wazza.

Full time And thank the Lord, that is over. Apologies if I'm being harsh, but that was garbage, and to be honest, both teams were a disgrace. A particularly poor advertisement for the game, with defensive possession owning the game. Whatever the excuses, player tiredness, tactics, whatever, that was awful. Apologies to fans of football should be forthcoming from all involved. I'm off to forget as quickly as I can that this match ever happened. Perth with the best and, to be honest, only chance of the game through Keogh and Davidson, and Galekovic did his job when called upon. Games like that though are why football gets a bad wrap.
