The Asian Champions League begins on Tuesday evening for the Melbourne Victory, as they look to make a significant impact on the competition for the first time. They host Daegu FC of South Korea to get the ball rolling, and you can join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEDT).

With Daegu and the Japanese qualifiers Hiroshima in their group alongside Chinese outfit Guangzhou Evergrande, the Victory will be confident of escaping the group stage – something they have never done before.

The Victory have had a strong A-League campaign to date, and currently sit in third spot on the domestic table.

In saying that, their form over the last few weeks has been a little bit sketchy, and they – their defence in particular – will need to be better against some strong weapons brought down under by Daegu.

They come into the match having two points from their last four games, with losses against the Perth Glory and Newcastle Jets hampering the sides charge. Where they formerly looked to be in a secure top two position, they have now lost that grip.

They have had a few injuries, but they need to be better in winning possession out of midfield today, and that starts with players like Keisuke Honda and Terry Antonis doing a job, then setting up for Ola Toivonen and Kosta Barbarouses in the final third.

Daegu, on the other hand, have only just started their K-League season at home, drawing their first game against Jeonbuk.

Before that, their last competitive match was taking victory against Ulasn Hyundai in the Korean FA Cup final across two legs.

That was a strong performance, but they hit the ground running in Australia without a great deal of match practice. Putting them into conditions which will be considered very different to their local, it’ll be a real challenge for them to stay with Victory over the 90 minutes, fitness-wise. A strong start is critical.

Like the Victory, they possess some real weapons in the final third, with Brazilian Cesinha appearing the key if they are to win this match. He is likely to be joined up front by Edgar Bruno da Silva, who has plenty of experience and will challenge a strong Victory defensive line.

Prediction
The Victory are at home, and if they are going to go anywhere in this ACL campaign, then a win here is absolutely pivotal. I expect them to get the job done in a tense affair against the South Korean outfit.

Victory 2 – Daegu 1.

Be sure to join The Roar for live coverage of this ACL opener from 7:30pm (AEDT) and don’t forget to add a comment in the section below.

Victory already have Toivonen, Honda, Barbarousis, Troisi and Antonis, not sure how much more help removing the cap would be with the goalscoring side. The real difference as usual is with the balance of the squad, where absolute mediocrity is shown up. Like most of the Jets team a couple of weeks ago, Donachie, Roux, Brown and Broxham are not ACL standard (although the latter played decently enough).

My thoughts are that there really is nowhere for australian domestic football to hide. The standard of the A League has completely stagnated and until the salary cap is gone and we have at least 4 more teams to widen the player pool, nothing will change. The football this season has been poor, and in the ACL, players like Troisi and Antonis and Barbarousis, some of the better A league players, are shown up for the mediocre footballers they really are. The idea of troisi as a marquee shows just how far our competition is from measuring up.

And lets hope Popovic does the same thing next year.

Victory have now played 40 games in the ACL and had 10 wins. Not a good record. When Popovic went all the way there was some luck with refereeing but he set his side up to be hard to beat. The Victory way is to take it to their opponents but I think that opens up the field and plays into their opponents hands.

FULLTIME Daegu FC have put on a stunning performance to take a 3-1 upset victory over the Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park. With a home game against a club who finished seventh in the K-League last season to start their campaign, it felt must-win for the Victory, who dominated the opening exchanges. Deagu had set up with five behind the ball though, and the Victory fell into a trap of simply being happy to string passes together, with scoring opportunities few and far between despite their dominance in the possession statistic. They eventually did find a goal on the counter attack, with Keisuke Honda and Kosta Barbarouses linking up, before Ola Toivonen put one in. From there though, it was all Daegu, with Jo Hyeon-woo putting in a stunning performance in front of goal, while their two imports - Cesinha and Edgar - took over the game, allowing Daegu to run up three goals, the first of which was just two minutes after the Victory's first. The game ran away from Melbourne in the second half, and while there was some luck involved, Melbourne's defence in the middle of the field was poor. They now face an uphill battle to get out of the group stage, with three away trips and matches to come against Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Guangzhou Evergrande. Melbourne Victory 1 Daegu FC 3

This is quite embarrasing. I honestly don't think anyone will repeat the Wanderers success in the ACL.

FULLTIME Melbourne with one last chance to better their goal difference. Honda takes a free kick, it comes off the back of Donachie, Deagu clear, and that will be the end of that. Wow oh wow. At halftime, if you had of said Daegu would win 3-1, you would have been laughed out of the building, but the Victory now face a real uphill battle. Melbourne Victory 1 Daegu FC 3

If you lack pace and athleticism you need to make up for it by having an exquisite touch and guile - e.g. Del Piero when playing for SFC in the twilight of his career. He was superb.
