Round 1 of season 2018-19 saw the first time the previous season’s grand finalists both lost to begin the next season.
Melbourne Victory were rightly aggrieved in the Melbourne derby, believing that on the balance they had the better of the game and opportunities against their sky blue opponents.
Huge credit must go to Kevin Muscat this season. To introduce Keisuke Honda into his team and manage to cater for the loss of Besart Berisha is a testament to Muscat’s man managing ability to keep his team balanced and firing.
However, for all the positives about Melbourne at the moment, the results already need to improve. An early exit from the FFA Cup, and a round 1 loss, paints a picture of a team still failing to deliver.
A win here against a strong Perth Glory is a must for the Victory.
Perth Glory, on the other hand, are a work in progress, as Tony Popovic continues to weave his magic with his new squad.
Much like Melbourne, Perth will be disappointed not to have a ‘W’ next to their name after round 1, generally playing strong football only to be denied the further two points with a late equaliser.
After a bit of a statement in the media this week about the Bolt trial, Andy Keogh will be determined to let his football do some talking, and nothing speaks louder than goals.
This promises to be a tight affair.
Prediction
Melbourne should be too strong. As always with Perth, travel should be a factor, while I would expect Honda, Troisi and Barbarouses to be better for the first round run, and be better placed to create more havoc, and thus more goals, up front.
