Match preview:

Perth Glory welcome Brisbane Roar to HBF Park on Sunday afternoon in Round 1 of the 2019-20 A-League season. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 6pm (AEDT).

Five months is a long time to wait, too long really. But, the wait is over. Rejoice! The A-League is back.

Robert Bernard Fowler is also back in Australian football as the coach of Brisbane Roar. The Liverpool legend makes his full-time managerial debut against the side he played for in 2011/12.

It will be fascinating to see what affect a ‘God’ has had on a team that desperately needed divine intervention.

These two sides had very contrasting campaigns last season. Glory won 18 games and were crowned Premiers. Meanwhile, Brisbane managed just four victories and finished second from bottom.

Perth won all three matches against the Roar last term, including a 4-0 drubbing here back in February.

Team news
Glory’s success under coach Tony Popovic has been based on a solid defence, but they have lost key players over the winter in that department.

The departures of Shane Lowry and Jason Davidson would have been unsettling so reinforcements have arrived in new signings Gregory Wüthrich and Osama Malik.

Top scorer Andy Keogh has also left the club with Bruno Fornaroli joining as his replacement. The Uruguayan has a point to prove after being frozen out by Melbourne City last year. The 32-year-old knows where the net is having scored 46 goals in 70 A-League appearances.

Robbie Fowler’s first priority as the Brisbane boss was recruitment – 16 players left the Roar at the end of last season.

Irish striker Roy O’Donovan is one of 11 new arrivals, as is defender Tom Aldred who spent last season at Scottish Premier League club Motherwell. The 28-year-old also has bags of experience playing in England’s lower leagues.

Roar fans will hope he can shore up a defence that conceded 71 goals last season – the most in the league.

Prediction
Feelings of happiness, sadness, frustration and madness. How I have missed you.

I’m going for a score draw to kick off the season at HBF Park.
