Keisuke Honda will play his first match in Japan for more than a decade when the Melbourne Victory travel to play Besart Berisha’s Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 9pm (AEDT).

After leaving the Victory in 2018, Berisha joined Hiroshima, but has struggled to make an impact in the JLeague and didn’t play during their opening group stage match last week.

Hiroshima, in their first Champions League campaign since 2016, lost to Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande 2-0 away from home in their opener, and while they weren’t poor, they weren’t on the same level as their opponents.

Still, as far as Champions League’s go, this is a tough one because of the travel distance, and they will be aiming, as most clubs do, to win their home matches.

The club finished second last year in the JLeague behind Kawasaki Frontale, and a lot of that squad has stayed the course.

For the most part, Hiroshima have had a reasonable amount of success, and the last time they didn’t play the top division of Japanese football was 2008.

Their run towards the top last season was mostly built off their defence, but Brazilian import Patric had almost half their goals for the season, so if they do go forward, expect him to be trying to break down the Melbourne defence.

Despite having Honda, alongside players like Ola Toivonen in the squad, the Victory have really struggled in front of goal in their last month or so.

The Victory haven’t won any of their last five outings, which includes a dreadful 3-1 loss at home to Daegu FC in their ACL group stage opener.

The onus is now on Melbourne to try and pick up victories away from home, and while Honda might feel at home tonight, the rest of the team won’t, as they try to put an awful overseas record behind thm.

The Victory must start well, shutting out the crowd and forcing Hiroshima to play a style which won’t suit them, if they are a chance tonight.

The visitors must also be willing to get back and defend counter attacks strongly, which is aided by Lawrence Thomas in front of goals, but it might all be in vain if they can’t shut down Patric.

Prediction
Sanfrecce lost away, but they are going to be a tough team to beat at home, with plenty of pace, an ability to get it wide, and a solid defence. The Victory’s form line has been pretty ordinary recently, but I’ll back the Australian outfit to hang onto a tough draw.

Hiroshima 1 – Melbourne 1.

A lapse early on in defence, and bang, it's a tough game for Victory. Despite the Fox team talking about Victory, victory and not much else, I thought Sanfrecce was just too good, everywhere. Our standards are improving but we still have a way to go.

FULLTIME The Melbourne Victory's 20th away game in Asian Champions League football has gone the same way as the first 19, as they remain winless after a late winner from Daiki Watari ensured Sanfrecce Hiroshima got a vital three points at home. After both teams lost during Matchday 1, it was a vital game, and Hiroshima got off to the best of starts in front of 11,000 fans as Shunki Higashi scored in the fourth minute. From that point out, the Victory more or less dominated the game, but continually struggled to execution in the final third, and to find a way through some excellent Hiroshima defence, with the hosts playing five at the back. The trend continued after the interval, with the Victory struggling to get a goal on the board, before Storm Roux eventually linked with Keisuke Honda in the 71st minute for the Japanese superstar to put one away. Their lead lasted for just eight minutes though, with a renewed effort from Hiroshima on the counter attack finally paying off, as Watari headed home the winner. The Victory now sit outright last in the group and will need something of a miracle across their last four games to qualify, with a trip to Guangzhou waiting on Matchday 3 in mid-April. Hiroshima 2 Melbourne 1

Victory gone to the all practical intents... Almost certain that Australia will go to one and a half places next ACL. My word victory played a lot of long ball garbage in the last 20

FULLTIME Honda takes it quickly, flat and at the near post. Athiu was there, but couldn't make the angle work for him. It would have been another corner, but the whistle goes, and the Victory are still winless from 20 games on the road in Asian Champions League football. Hiroshima 2 Melbourne 1

90 + 3' - Another quick press forward is shut down, and that takes another 15 seconds off the clock. The Victory will need to go quickly with one final roll of the dice, and Baena has a shot deflected. Corner. After time. This will be it. Might as well bring Thomas forward. Hiroshima 2 Melbourne 1

Troisi really is a very hard player to like. The idea that he is a marquee is laughable

90 + 3' - The Victory stay onside here and the header just goes straight up. It was pretty well taken by Honda, but then the ball comes straight back, only for the ball to Athiu to be blocked. 30 seconds. Hiroshima 2 Melbourne 1

90 + 2' - The Victory firing up field and looking to get a late one. Free kick, so this will be a set piece with Honda to take it. Too far out to shoot, but still dangerous. Hiroshima 2 Melbourne 1

90 + 1' - Nice aerial through ball and Patric hands down for Notsuda, then the ball is out to the corner, and over for a Victory throw in. Hiroshima 2 Melbourne 1

88' - YELLOW CARD - KOSTA BARBAROUSES (Melbourne) Barbarouses into the book now for a late challenge. Such a shame for the Victory. Both goals they have let in have been players not tracking the run, and it's going to cost them a vital point away from home in their second ACL match. Hiroshima 2 Melbourne 1
