Match result:

Sydney FC and Newcastle fought out a tight contest throughout, which saw Sydney FC score late in the first half and hold on for the duration to claim the win.

Sydney had an early scare, needing to sub off Jacob Tratt after five minutes with what looked to be a groin injury.

Soon after, both Sydney’s full backs picked up yellow cards, leaving them with a large period of the game to be careful for.

Sydney survived the initial defensive reshuffle, with Newcastle unable to take any of their few chances.

A minute out from half time, Brandon O’Neill sent a ball floating in towards captain Alex Brosque, Nigel Boogaard held his position and got a foot to the long pass, but was only able to direct it past Glen Moss and into the net.

Newcastle made aggressive subs by bringing on Kaine Sheppard and Joey Champness, but their attack was put on hold at the 74th minute when Jason Hoffman was sent off for kicking out at Brandon O’Neill as he appeared to step on him as he lay on the pitch.

Just minutes later, Michael Zullo – who was already on a yellow card – left his foot in on Roy O’Donovan. Referee Adam Fielding elected not to give Zullo a second yellow.

Sydney saw out the remaining time, while Newcastle tried desperately to salvage something by lobbing the ball long in hope.

The 1-0 result sees Sydney hold on to third spot, while the gap between Adelaide in sixth, and Newcastle in seventh extends to ten points.

Sydney are coming off the back of a strong performance at home to Adelaide where they sorted their defensive issues from the week before to hold on to a 2-1 win.

The biggest improvement for Sydney was the decision to fill the large whole at right back left by Rhyan Grant with Jacob Tratt, rather than Paulo Retre.

Tratt mostly played a more conservative, defensive role than we’re used to seeing from Grant. But it worked. And he nabbed his second goal of the season from a corner.

Newcastle fell victim to a late piece of brilliance from James Troisi, as they played out a 2-1 loss in Melbourne.

Their goal came from NPL Victoria success story Kaine Sheppard, who scored within minutes of replacing Brazilian Jair.

Ahead of this match, both teams have key outs with Sydney’s Josh Brillante and Newcastle’s Daniel Georgievski both suspended after picking up their 5th yellow cards last round.

It is likely Sydney will bring in Anthony Caceres for Brillante, while Lachie Jackson is expected to replace Georgievski for Newcastle.

Newcastle do regain playmaker Ronald Vargas, as he returns from his 1 match ban. And Joey Champness has been named in the extended squad for the first time this season after finally recovering from a broken foot.

Prediction
Can’t see anything other than a Sydney win here.

If they play like they did against Adelaide, even without Brillante, they should prove too strong for Newcastle.

Sydney FC 3 – 1 Newcastle Jets

Where is the red card for O’Neill stamping on Hoffman? Where is Zullo second yellow for a deliberate professional foul ?

So the ref reached to his pocket to give Zullo a yellow, but changed his mind therefore making sure the Sydney player did not get sent off
