Sydney have never had a great run at the ACL, winning just seven of their 26 games to date and only making the round of 16 once in five attempts, back in that incredible 2016 year.

Steve Corica’s side haven’t been at their best in the A-League this season either, and will probably need to take out the grand final to qualify for this tournamemt next year. Winning home games for Sydney will be critical if they are to advance out of a tough group, which includes Ulsan, the Japanese champions Kawasaki, and Chinese champions Shanghai SIPG.

The Sky Blues come into this ACL opener on the back of two straight wins, which should do wonders for their confidence, and with some strong attackers forward, they will be hoping to push the pace of this game.

Between Adam Le Fondre, Milos Ninkovic, Alex Brosque and Reza Ghoochannejhad, they have weapons all over the pitch, and need to make the most of their opportunities against a usually defensively good Ulsan Hyundai.

They should have a match fitness advantage here as well, with Ulsan only one game into their new K-League season, where they finished third last season.

Beating the Suwon Bluewings was an impressive performance though, while they also won a play-off against Perak 5-1 to make the group rounds.

They will be looking to Brazilian import star Júnior Negrão to lead the way up front, while their defence, which is always solid, will be where they look to build the game from, strangling the life out of the home side.

Prediction
The Sky Blues might be at home, but Ulsan are an incredibly strong side, and should play a style which will keep them right in this. I expect it to go down to the wire, but the sides to settle for a point a piece when it’s all said and done.

Sydney 1 – Ulsan 1.

Sydney made Ulsan look pretty ordinary. They continue to struggle with the scoring part of the game and could have scored several last night. Just by the way, Rhyan Grant was outstanding - he has improved exponentially over the last few years. He and Ninkovic are the only two who consistently make penetrating runs through the opposition defence.

FULLTIME Sydney FC dominated 90 minutes of football against Ulsan Hyundai in their opening Asian Champions League group match, but couldn't find the back of the net and will be forced to settle for a nil-all draw at Kogarah. The hosts defended well in the first ten minutes, but after that, Andrew Redmayne might as well have been a spectator. Sydney had chance after chance, with Brendon O'Neill, Milos Ninkovic and Adam Le Fondre combining well up front, but their slight problems in execution against an extremely strong defensive outfit from South Korea simply couldn't get the job done. Ulsan defended strongly and, in tough, windy conditions, will be more than happy to take a point back to South Korea with them. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

FULLTIME It's a point a piece at Kogarah, and Sydney now have failed to score in their last four home ACL games. Sydney dominated the game, and in particular the second half, but couldn't put a goal into the back of the net, and from here, will need wins on the road to qualify. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

90 + 2' - Shocking corner. O'Neill can't keep that in the field of play, it's behind for a goalkick, and that will probably be that. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

90 + 2' - Here comes the free kick. Into the box and it bounces to Seung-Hoon, who only just gets a glove on it as the ball goes away for a corner. Jee, any touch from Sydney and that was in. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

90' - SUB: Ulsan - Lee Deong-Kyeon, Kim In-Sung (off) Kim Bo Kyeung to take the free kick here. It swirled, curved and then beat everyone over the sideline. That was poor. Two minutes of stoppage time. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

90' - Into the final minute of regulation time we go, and Sydney are running out of time. Free kick against Grant here. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

89' - Ulsan now through their right side. Poor cross, but dealt with well on an awkward bounce by Grant. Redmayne then rolls it out, and O'Neill can't track it down. He had plenty of clear space in front of him if did get there. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

88' - Ninkovic and Ivanovic linking up on the edge of the box here for Sydney, but a really poor pass looking for Grant is taken away by Ulsan, who look to go back on the counter, before In-Sung shoots and it goes over the crossbar. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

87' - Ivanovic goes up the right hand side after taking the goal kick, then they switch to the left and search for a way through. Zullo goes the cross, finds Le Fondre who drops for Ninkovic, but that ball was too far out in front and Seung-Hoon takes it away for Ulsan. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

86' - Into the final five minutes. Sydney with a quick throw in, then they switch through the middle, Brosque goes to Ivanovic, he shoots, shoots again and then has a header, but that's behind for a goal kick as another chance goes begging. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

84' - Well, a crucial three points might go begging here for Sydney. They have a counter attack shut down this time, then Redmayne clears over the sideline with a pretty poor goal kick off an equally poor back pass from Wilkinson. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0

83' - Sydney look to be fatiguing a little bit here. They are strung out in defence here, then it's a cross from Jae-Yong, but that finds no one and Ulsan will now have it on the left, before Wilkinson does clear. Sydney 0 Ulsan 0
