Sydney FC will be hoping to not only win, but have other Asian Champions League results go their way when they head to South Korea for a tough clash with Ulsan Hyundai on Matchday 5. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEDT).

With three draws from their four matches to date, Sydney are still in with a shot at qualifying for the Round of 16, but will need everything to go their way.

This match falls at a tricky part of the season for the Sky Blues though with the A-League finals in full swing, so it’s unclear which players will run out for the do or die encounter in the Champions League.

However, after almost getting the better of Ulsan in their opening Champions League clash, only to be held to a nil-all draw despite dominating the most of the 90 minutes, they will take some confidence into this match.

It’s been a case of close, but no chocolates right throughout the tournament for Sydney, but with Shanghai and Kawasaki sitting just two and one points ahead of them respectively, Sydney could leapfrog into second place with a win this evening if they were to draw.

To do that though, they will have to press with their defence, not make errors, and play an up-tempo, fast style of soccer against a side who are likely to play from the back and try to punish Sydney on the counter attack whenever they get the chance.

Ulsan’s captain Lee Keun-ho will look to lead their charge from the front, while dangerous Brazilian import Júnior Negrão could suit up for the home side. Otherwise, it’s down to American midfielder Mix Diskerud to try and control the game, and stop Adam Le Fondre and co building on their dangerous combinations at the front.

Ulsan come into the game at the top of their group, and a win tonight would wrap up their qualification in the Round of 16, so it’s a key game. A loss, on the other hand, leaves them with the wolves snapping at their heels, with the potential of a loss in the final matchday stopping them from qualifying altogether.

A point also could be enough for Ulsan, so expect them to try and secure that first and foremost.

Prediction
Sydney have simply had a lot of problems breaking deadlocks or holding onto leads throughout this campaign. With Ulsan likely to play from the back and also be happy to settle for a point, don’t expect much difference to the last time these sides met.

Sydney 1 – Ulsan 1.

I’ve enjoyed the ACL more than the league this year. Good games against good quality opponents. Corica did well considering the absences of key players.

Yeah I agree. We've probably left 3 points on the table (2 vs Shanghai at Kogarah - oh Brillante what did you do?! - and 1 from either of the Ulsan or Kawasaki games). Do that and we're still in it. I've enjoyed watching it because I felt like we've been competitive in pretty much every match (we seem to relish playing Chinese teams) but ultimately not quite good enough. Reza is a good player but it seems like with Sydney he's a bit of a square peg in a round hole unfortunately and with our other key contributors like De Jong and Ninko missing game time in ACL it has just exacerbated this. Bummer.

Hopefully Perth redeems the reputation of the A League next ACL. Sydney FC have been an utter embarrassment.

Would be a shame if we lost qualification spots on the basis of the past 2-3 campaigns. Despite a poor result here and there, I don't think we're too far off the teams that beat us. And I don't think those teams are too far off winning the whole thing. Unlike the UCL, the quality is pretty uniform across the teams that compete here. Replacing one of our teams with a Thai or Malaysian team would only serve to reinforce the dominance of China, Japan and Korea in the East conference. They may be able to afford the best South Americans, but until they are allowed to fill their teams with highly-paid non-Asians, they are all beatable.

Frustratingly close in all their games so far, and could have won a couple with a bit of luck and better finishing. Sydney definitely still suffer from the thin squad once you get past the first teamers. Retre for Grant, for example, kills all forward momentum down the right.

So, over in Japan, Kawasaki have drawn with Shanghai 2-2. Sydney can get to six points with a win and draw level with Shanghai in the next match day, but they would be behind on a tiebreaker of away goals, so that is their campaign done and dusted.

FULLTIME Sydney are out of the Asian Champions League with a loss on the road to Ulsan. An inventive goal from Max Diskerud and lack of class in the final third for the Sky Blues the difference between the two sides at the end of the day. Ulsan lock up their spot at the top of the group, and once again, both Australian teams won'tn get out of the group stage, with a real threat now that an automatic spot to the group stage will be lost, as Thailand look set to leapfrog Australia on the ranking table. Sydney weren't terrible tonight, but they just didn't have any touch in front of goal. Ulsan 1 Sydney 0

90 + 3' - Ulsan should have scored through Myung-Jae there, but his shot is deflected. Sydney can't get onto the ball and hit them on the counter though, with Ulsan now running the remaining seconds off the clock. This will be it. A free kick and yellow card for Retre now as well. Ulsan 1 Sydney 0

90 + 2' - The corner is at the near post and cleared well by Ulsan. Caceres now with it, he turns it over and Ulsan will go back up the right-hand side. That might be it. Ulsan 1 Sydney 0

90 + 2' - Reza on the left, and it's a corner for Sydney. Might be all coming down to this. Ulsan 1 Sydney 0

90' - Three minutes of stoppage time The corner is out to the back post, but Seung-Hoon comes out, makes the save, then Ulsan win a free kick back up at halfway. Sydney just haven't taken their chances tonight. Frankly, not good enough. Ulsan 1 Sydney 0

90' - Sydney got out on the counter there, but the final touch for Reza just didn't have enough on it. That, frankly, is poor from the import striker. Corner. Ulsan 1 Sydney 0

86' - O'Neill's delivery on the corner is really quite poor, and cleared off the near post with ease by Ulsan. Sydney are all the way back to Redmayne, then they go to space on the right for Retre who crosses straight into a defender. Ulsan hang on there, and it's a free kick to follow as Min-Soo goes to ground. Ulsan 1 Sydney 0
