Western United vs Newcastle Jets: A-League match result

Western United went into this match as favourites, had the better team on paper, were less effected by injury and national duty, had much more possession and created more chances. And yet, Newcastle came out on top 1-0.

The first half was sloppy in possession from both sides. It was evident that Western United were missing Panagiotis Kone as Alessandro Diamanti was dropping deep to try and get something happening up front. Newcastle had some of their own chances but anything with steady build up, Western had covered.

The scores were opened late in the first half when Newcastle broke on the counter through Dimitri Petratos. Petratos slid a ball past the Western defence for Angus Thurgate to latch on to and finish past a charging Filip Kurto.

The second half saw a much more energetic Western launch pressured attack after pressured attack. Newcastle were holding on until a Diamanti cross found Josh Risdon at the back post who headed home to equalise.

On VAR review, it was found that Besart Berisha was offside in the build-up play and the equaliser was overturned. It remained 1-0 to Newcastle.

Western kept charging and creating, Mark Rudan made a series of substitutions and formation changes to try and break through the Newcastle defence, but nothing came off.

Newcastle, through some top-class defending and goalkeeping from Glen Moss were able to hold on for their first win of the season.

Newcastle have their second bye of the season next week, while Western United head up Central Coast.

Western United came from behind against a fast-starting Western Sydney Wanderers last week, through a pair of unlikely sources.

Center-back Andrew Durante opened the scoring from a corner while Kwabena Appiah’s fourth A-League goal in 84 appearances got them the win.

Newcastle meanwhile hosted Perth Glory in an insipid match that ended 1-1. Jason Hoffman spurned a few good chances early on, but made good on one to give Newcastle the lead.

A late Diego Castro equaliser assured the result.

National team duty does hit Western United, with right-back Josh Risdon away with the Socceroos. This will give a chance to a full back waiting in the wings. Possibly Dylan Pierias or former Novocastrian, Ivan Vujica.

For Newcastle the national call ups have hit harder. Main striker Abdiel Arroyo, starting midfielder Matt Ridenton and full back Bobby Burns will all be away.

This on top of long term injuries to Wes Hoolahan and Kaine Sheppard has seen Newcastle name a 16-man extended squad – the shortest possible.

Besart Berisha is set to return for Western United after being rested against the Wanderers.

Jonathan Aspropotamitis joins the extended squad, while Josh Cavallo replaces Josh Risdon. Panagiotis Kone has also been named despite coming off early last week with a hamstring injury.

Newcastle have named captain Nigel Boogaard to return, after he was a late out last weekend. Jack Simmons has also been included.

Prediction
Newcastle have struggled enough without missing key players to national duty. Whereas United – less the first 15’ against Melbourne Victory – have looked super competitive. United should win this one pretty easily.
