'How did she miss this?': Simon's open-goal shocker typifies sloppy Aussie performance

By The Roar / Editor

That one was tough to swallow with a chance to bring the scores level. While the Australian attack looked fluent in stretches, it was always going to be difficult to overcome some defensive shockers as the Matildas went down 3-0.

I have seen worse misses in the EPL. That was the only real miss of the game. USA they had a few more good chances. Australia did well to force saves from the other chances. Are the USA really smarter defensively, no. They have 9 players in the box by the time shot is missed to 5. The next shot that is saved was very poor marking but the US because the had 9 players in the box, the shot was from the side. If you look at the second USA goal its 4 vs 2 in Australias favour somehow, you get 3 other US players to be in front of the next Australian by the time the shot is made.

The commentators answered their own question. Simon missed on her wrong foot because the cross wasn't aimed well enough. Both players did very well to create the opportunity, but it didn't come off because they weren't quite in synch.
