Nick Kyrgios vs Karen Khachanov: US Open quarter-finals live scores, blog as match goes down to wire in 5th set

By Danielle Smith / Editor

Australia’s own Nick Kyrgios faces off against Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals of the 2022 US Open. Join The Roar for live game-by-round updates from 10:00am AEDT.

Expect a fiery encounter when two of the most outspoken tennis players come together for this epic battle. With a semi-final berth on the line, a heated Twitter exchange between the players from two years ago has resurfaced, just in time to add more fuel to the fire. Kyrgios called Khachanov a “pelican” when the two argued on social media about Covid-19 protocols.

23rd-ranked Kyrgios booked his spot in the quarter-finals after causing a huge upset against the world number one Daniil Medvedev 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-2i n the fourth round. He has become one of the favorites to take out the title after Rafael Nadal was knocked out of the Open earlier this week.

Khachanov, who is ranked 27th, comes into this match off the back of a five-set win against Spain’s Pablo Carreno-Busta 4-6 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-3.

These two have faced each other just twice before, with each player taking home a win.

This has just come in fresh off the wire - haircuts are not a thing ... There was quite a hairy situation off court while Nick Kyrgios battled on court at the US Open. Two men's stay in the Arthur Ashe Stadium seats was cut short after one buzzed the other's head right there in the stands while Kyrgios and Karen Khachanov played their quarter-final on Tuesday night. They had clippers and the sort of cape a barber usually uses to keep a customer clean. Soon enough, social media users were all excited about how a YouTuber known for his pranks had pulled this one off. Tournament security removed the two from the match. "When someone saw it, security went to the two individuals. They were escorted out of their seats and then off the grounds for disruption of play," US Tennis Association Brendan McIntyre said, adding: "There's a first time time for anything."
