Alex De Minaur will be out to keep his strong start to the Australian summer of tennis going when he takes on Reily Opelka in the second round of the Sydney International. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 8:30pm (AEDT).

De Minaur made the final of his home tournament last year and will be aiming to get back to the same spot again as his preparations continue to ramp up for the Australian Open.

With a seeding spot secured at the first grand slam of the year, it’s been a stunning 12 months for the youngster, and after being bettered by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Brisbane during the quarter-finals, he bounced back with a strong victory first up in Sydney.

Taking on Dusan Lajovic, he was at his trademark speedy best around the back of the court, answered everything thrown at him and put away when needed to, taking a convincing straight-sets victory.

On the other side of the net for this second-round match will be Reily Opelka.

Ranked just outside the top 100 in the world, Opelka will also be heading to Melbourne after this tournament. The youngster has shown some positive signs during a short career so far, but needs to be more consistent.

He failed to qualify in Brisbane, losing to Marc Polmans, but got through the battle in Sydney, beating Pablo Andujar and Taro Daniel, before he got a victory in the first round in a surprising upset over Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Prediction
Hard to see the Australian losing this one. He should march on through his home tournament in a pursuit of a second straight final.

De Minaur in straight sets.

It's still tossing it down in Sydney and Ken Rosewall Arena is looking very wet. No official call as yet but Channel 9 have thrown the towel in so I will as well. Good night all.

Good return forces the error. 0-15. Opelka goes wide with a forehand. 0-30. Good rally before De Minaur wins with a backhand down the line. 0-40. Kicking serve for 15-40. Serve down the T draws the error. 30-40. Forehand return goes just long. It's deuce. Great volley point from Opelka and he has the ad. Opelka overhits a forehand and we are back to deuce. Unforced backhand error and break point for De Minaur. Another great return and De Minaur has early break. De Minaur 1 Opelka 0

There is a lot of rain heading in from north west of Sydney. I think there may be a few rain delays in this one. Difficult for both players.

Angelique Kerber has won through to the 3rd round with a 7-6 6-2 win over Camila Giorgi. We are not far from the start between De Minaur and Opelka

Well, I've jinxed it. It is now raining at Homebush. The players remain on court so hopefully not a long break

Some disappointing news. The rain has started to fall at Homebush. The umpire has kept the players on court so hopefully not a long delay. Kerber does lead 4-2 in the second set

Alex De Minaur needs no introduction but Reilly Opelka probably does. Opelka is 21, stands at 211cms tall and, in all likelihood, has a game similar to John Isner. He is ranked 102, close to a career high, and has spent most of his career so far on the Challenger Tour in the US.

Camila Giorgi and Angelique Kerber are in the midst of a tight clash on Ken Rosewall Arena. Kerber claimed the first in a tie-break and it is 2 games all in the second. We will keep an eye on that one.

Rain has been threatening most of the evening in Sydney but, so far, Sydney Olympic Park is dry.
