First time Grand Slam semi-finalists Ashleigh Barty and Amanda Anisimova face off at the 2019 French Open on Friday. Join The Roar for live coverage of the semi-final, with live scores and a blog of the match starting at 7pm AEST.
Ashleigh Barty defeated Madison Keys in the quarter-finals, a straight-sets 6-3 7-5 victory that took just one hour and nine minutes.
At the same time, Amanda Anisimova progressed to the semi-finals with a win over third seed and defending champion Simona Halep (6-2 6-4), in a game that also lasted just over an hour.
The winner will progress to the final of the French Open, where they will play either Johanna Konta or Markéta Vondroušová.
Konta and Vondroušová will play on Court Simonne-Mathieu, also starting at 7pm AEST, with the final scheduled for Saturday.
Let’s take a closer look at the semi-finalists: Barty and Anisimova.
Ashleigh Barty is at a career-high number eight in the world and is Australia’s No.1 ranked women’s tennis player in both singles and doubles.
The 23-year-old has had a fairly straight-forward run to the semi-finals, winning in straight-sets to all but her fourth-round opponent, Sofia Kenin another American.
Barty has four career titles to her name, most recently the Miami Open, however is yet to break through on the Grand Slam stage.
Anisimova is the youngest American woman to make a Grand Slam semi-final since Venus Williams at the US Open in 1997.
Seventeen-year-old Anisimova went into the Grand Slam ranked 51 in the world, and is yet to drop a set on her road to the semi-final.
The right-hander won her first WTA title in Bogota, Colombia in April and has stunned the competition with her form over the past two weeks.
Unfortunately, weather could become a problem in Paris, as rain is forecast for Friday.
Gale-force winds and showers are expected, however with the 11am (local) start time, organisers are hopeful of results.
Prediction
Calm and composed until now, the frustratingly versatile Barty might just get under the skin of the young 17-year-old Anisimova.
Though she’s never been in this position either, Barty has experience playing in doubles finals at Grand Slams.
Barty has the experience-edge and mental stability to get across the line today.

On Court Simonne Mathieu, 19-year-old Markéta Vondroušová has just beaten 26th seed Johanna Konta in two sets. That means Barty will meet Vondroušová in the final tomorrow evening 11pm AEST on Court Philippe Chatrier.

A brilliant tournament for the 17-year-old but a three set challenge against the number eight seed was too big of a task. The mental strength of the young American to come back in the first set was incredible, her powerful striking is also something to fear as she gains Grand Slam experience. For now though, Australian Ashleigh Barty is through to the final fo the French Open! What an opportunity for her, on clay too.
