Match preview

Aussie firebrand Nick Kyrgios will look to keep his US Open campaign rolling as he takes on Frenchman Antoine Hoang in the second round. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 7am (AEST).

The Australian has been at his usual cracking highs and enormous lows over the last month as he goes through the US hard court season.

One minute he was winning the next in Washington, the next being knocked out in the first round at Montreal, before he broke some racquets, lost a match and copped a mammoth fine for a stunning outburst in Cincinnati.

And yet, apart from some minor complaining by Kyrgios standards, he came out during his first-round match against Steve Johnson and played some scintillating tennis, getting the job done in straight sets over a frustrated local favourite.

When Kyrgios is at his best, there are very few players in the world who can beat him, and those who can struggle to get the job done, so on paper, this match should be a walk in the park.

But no Kyrgios matches are played on paper. They are played in front of real-life crowds, with real-life situations and every chance for Kyrgios to explode.

It makes him the most fascinating player on the ATP circuit to watch, but even an explosion shouldn’t stop him from moving to the third round of what is now a very wide open section of the draw thanks to the eliminations of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem in the first round.

There is a very real path for Kyrgios to go deep into the tournament, but he must take it one match at a time, and Hoang will still front up a challenge.

The 23-year-old, who is ranked just outside the top 100 players in the world, is much suited to the slow-moving clay court, and will need to find a way of getting the big Kyrgios serve back into play consistently if he is to stand a chance here.

While he has some challenger wins during the lead up to the US Open, he was bundled out at the first hurdle in both Cincinnati and Winston-Salem, only to come up with an upset five-set defeat over Leonardo Mayer in the first round in New York.

It was a gritty performance from Hoang, who spent over three and a half hours on court, but served effectively and will need to pick his spots well against the aggressive Australian to stand a chance.

The pair have never faced off before this meeting.

Prediction
Kyrgios should win and win easily. You can never be sure, but he will be keen to get off court as quickly as possible and go to do whatever it is that Nick Kyrgios does during his non-playing time.

Kyrgios in straight sets.

Well, with Thanasi Kokkinakis withdrawing from his match before he could get on court, that'll be the end of our US Open coverage for today. Thanks for joining in with Nick Kyrgios and Antoine Hoang and hopefully you enjoyed the call. We will be back in the coming days with more action at the final grand slam of the year. I'll be on with the NRL tonight as the New Zealand Warriors take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Join me at 6pm (AEST) for that. Bye for now.

MATCH RESULTS Nick Kyrgios has advanced to the third round of the US Open in dominant circumstances, blasting past Antoine Hoang in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The Australian had his serve rolling from the word go, but it could have all been derailed after he was told he had to play the match with his collar down due to a big logo on the back of it, which the Aussie wanted on display. It was a clinical performance from Kyrgios, with his only other minor moment coming after Hoang was allowed to challenge a call after the umpire had called the score and game. Unlike other previous occasions though, Kyrgios had no problems moving on from the moments, serving a huge 24 aces and just a single double fault in the hour and 58-minute performance. The Australian broken in the opening game of all three sets, and while he was dominant through the second set, there was a slight lapse early in the third as Hoang broke his serve back. That was as good as it got for the Frenchman though, who struggled to match it with Kyrgios, who rolled away with a comfortable win. Kyrgios now takes on Andrey Rublev in the third round, who only had to play one set in his second round match against Gilles Simon, before the Frenchman retired with injury.
