Fevola traded to Brisbane

By The Roar / Editor

The blockbuster AFL trade of Brendan Fevola to Brisbane has finally gone through. Less than three hours before the 2pm Friday trade deadline, Carlton and the Lions announced a deal for the star full-forward.

Carlton have also given up their second-round draft selection at No.27 in return for Brisbane utility Lachlan Henderson and the Lions’ first-round draft pick at No.12.

On Thursday, the Blues and Lions were trying to engineer a deal that would have sent Brisbane key forward Daniel Bradshaw and team-mate Michael Rischitelli to Carlton.

But the deal fell over and there is speculation the main reason is that Rischitelli did not want to leave the Lions.

Carlton decided to trade Fevola after his drunken misbehaviour during and after last month’s Brownlow Medal function.

It was the last straw for the Blues and they resolved to move him on despite protests from some fans.

Fevola’s move means he will form a fearsome key forward combination with Lions captain Jonathan Brown.

Fevola is the reigning Coleman Medallist as the league’s top goalkicker and he also won the award in 2006, while Brown topped the goalkicking in 2007.

Fevola is a three-time All-Australian and was named this year along with Brown, who received the honour for the second time.

There is ongoing speculation that Bradshaw might still move to another club before trade week ends.

Fevola’s trade was the only new exchange announced before noon on Friday, but there are certain to be others before the 2pm deadline.

Got to be honest though. Although I have seen his name all over the place since the Brownlows, if I ran into him in the street, but I wouldn't have the faintest who he was. Probably be a good thing for him in Brisbane, to get away from the attention, and realise that not everybody thinks he is a god.

more recently brown and lynch, and given voss was in the same team he would have known the best set ups. additionally this year the colts team I coached regularly had two talls at FF one playing in the square another leading out. another tall at a deep CHF (35m out). This worked well for us, opened up the fat side regularly. Our best return with this set up was 206 points. so it can work.

One example is Hawthorn's Franklin and Roughhead. One forward plays deep staying near the goal square (Fevola) the other drifts up the ground (Brown). The great benefit of two top forwards as they take the best defenders making double teaming difficult (see Reiwoldt in GF) . In Fevolas case he is a very good contested mark in a one on one situation. The opposition will have trouble keeping both them out of the game. Redb

Lads, maybe my memory is weak from too many knocks on the Rugby pitch, but when has a forward line ever functioned well with TWO GENUINE STAR forwards? Not talking about a champion CHF and FF like Longmire and Carey...... but I cant remember a long term well functioning forward line with two focal point. They get in each others way, one gets the shits etc etc.

aint that the truth. (dunno about 300 goals, but deadly for sure) One of Fevola's problems at Carlton was no-one stood up to him from the coach to the boot-studder they let him have his head on and off the field for 8 years. Fev was the golden boy at the club and had learnt like a small child how far he could push the boundaries and get away with it. Jono Brown wont tolerate that shite. Fev was not 'scared' or respected anyone at Carlton he did not have to contend with the leadership and stature of J Brown and will be going to the club with his tail between his legs. Brown is the kind of bloke who'd love to be in a trench with, he'd say right boys "over we go" and in the face of almost certain death you'd go. The issue is will Fevola respond?, I think he will but not more than 60-70% convinced. Redb

Buyer beware. Carlton just forgot to tell the Brissie boys about the small matter of a sexual assault. Geez, John Elliott would be proud of that move. I feel sorry for the players traded, except that I guess the message is now that they are at Carlton, at least they now that bad behviour will not be tolerated and they have avoided having favola as a team mate and that would have to be a good thing.

Fev won't have a qiuet time in brisbane, he is very well recognised by non AFL people, especiallly after his recent efforts were plastered over the news.

Bever fever, You are correct- He will bring some curious fans through the gates. Admittedly there is no guarantee he wont re-offend. Vossy is going for it - With the trades. He is like a fresh breath of air after Leigh Mathews who did a great job of establishing the "Brand" up there, and then got tired of the whole set up in the latter years. Fev might like the anonyiminity of Brisbane AFL life. Usually the wives and kids are able to calm some of these guys down- Have to wait and see.

Oikee, The guy i reckon is a dickhead, but if memory serves me right i thought lockett was a dickhead as well (pre swans) Take this guy away from his mates, his turf, stick him somewhere where his mates (probably ex school mates) dont have a great influence on him and watch him pull his head in. Put Jonathons Browns influence into the equation with Micheal Voss and see what happens. Good move by the Lions, things change very quickly sometimes, Ben Cousins was booed by Eagles fans this year, their favourite favourite son was no more. Lions fans who hate him now will love him when he kicks a couple of good goals and annoys other teams fans with his antics.

Your joking right Beaver, tell me your joking, the guy is a complete pill and will turn the public off no ends. Your a comedien you are, i dont think you get it, bad publicity is being frowned upon, not embraced. Anything that happens to the lions publicity wise in Brisbane is the biggest blow to the lions. The lions are squeaky clean, i dont think this will help their image. Gets back on the fence and waits until next year. :(

If this is the so-called hyped up draph system, its a complete joke. Nobody north of the Victorian border likes the guy, and i am sure now the brisbane public will be pretty pissed off. I dont give a hoot if he is superman, he is a dill, same as sam newman. A good stoning is too good for him. I am angry, real angry. :( Barry Hall is a drongo, but i would have preferred him, but no, melbourne had to have him, bloody sooks.

This is a great marketing ploy by the Lions, if a player is as stupid as he is good the more press, sponsors will pretend to be shocked but they will still put their money in, people will pay good money if they think something stupid will happen. BTW i think this a Tony lockett type situation, Fevola will pull his head in and do the right thing when away from Melbourne with its footy spotlights, best move for him. Also they really appeared to not give up much for him, perhaps they took over more of his contract than we were led to believe.
