No Friend to the Roosters as Jake stumbles again

By ScottWoodward.me / Roar Guru

I wrote a piece two weeks ago asking the question: “Should clubs sign Rugby League Bad Boys?” Obviously 20 year old Rooster Jake Friend didn’t read it.

This is the second time this year he has been arrested for drunken related behavior.

Police were unable to wake him while asleep in a taxi, and when they did, he became abusive and refused to pay his fare. He has been suspended while management decides what to do with his contract.

Sadly, this is a kid with the world at his feet and has been ear-marked as the long term hooker at the Roosters – described as potentially better than champion English rake, Keiron Cunningham.

You can understand why Monday was not a good day for the Roosters management.

This is the third year for recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan and new gun coach Brian Smith is only just starting to put his stamp on the club. They have only just cleaned out who they want and who they don’t want and a buzz of expectation has returned to the SFS.

Jake Friend may very well be a future star and is said to be a great guy off the drink, but his errant ways on the weekend brought the momentum of the Rooster’s training to a thundering halt.

Some Friend.

Probably close to the mark Dogs. The roar facts (excuse the pun) are that he is a 19 yo who is an alcoholic and needs help. At the end of the day we are talking about a kids life and to kick him out on the street with no future was never a consideration and nor should it have been. When your body craves for alcohol and you are supposed to be an elite athlete there is a big problem. Maybe the Roosters could have been pro active and addressed this earlier in the year, but at least they have not thrown him to the wolves and he will get the best care. Lets hope he recovers and makes it back, he has a lot to offer, as a footballer and from what I have been told, as a person.

I believe the Roosters will be doing what they did with Todd Carney. They will support the bloke and arrange for him to play for a lower level club, and make sure he gets the support he needs, with a view to him coming back next year to play for the Roosters. I think all clubs have learnt now to not throw away a decent player, just set them up with a chance to redeem themselves, and provide the right support structures (while at the same time distancing yourself from all this by using the sacking to show he is no longer a member of the club, just in case he stuffs up again)

Thanks Andyroo, my comments are often tongue in cheek and satire is my strong point :) I also follow Rugby League and represented the school at it. There is strong statistical evidence that the more controversy there is with NRL players the bigger the attendances and ratings. http://www.theroar.com.au/2009/09/17/the-year-from-hell-for-nrl/ I think Westy might be right in that football needs more drunken, drug addict, violent and gang banging players to get more media attention from the Murdoch press.

Jimbo I am a fan of your work but I don't think it's a good idea to bash NRL player behaviour. Firstly it doesn't affect Rugby league at all, the game is just indestructible Second when something does go wrong in Football we don't want to then look like Union supporters with their desperate attempts to defend their players and game… see the Quade Cooper thread. Thirdly I also support the Eels, and because Rugby League is so different don’t see a conflict in that.

Suddenly break and enter or bashing your sister in law musn't be considered crimes now they've been committed by Wallabies? Add, Justin Harris and his cocaine binges and suddenly the Wallabies legacy ain't lookin so rosy. What else is hidden out there?

Let's clarify one thing. If Thurston comes to rugby (and I don't want him - he's a thug), the money he would be paid by the ARU would NOT be money earmarked for Juniors. RUPA has a collective bargaining agreement with the ARU, whereby a certain percentage (too high) of the ARU's total revenue must be spent on players' salaries. Thurston's salary would come out of that pool. The money earmarked for the Juniors (not enough) comes from a different pool of money and wouldn't be affected by Thurston's signing. The Tahs supposedly have a no dickheads policy anyway, so they won't want him, and they've got Barnes, Halangahu and (hopefully) Beale. Maybe Melbourne will want him as a marquee player. As for the ARU covering up why Tuqiri was sacked - this is patently untrue. All along O'Neill allowed (dared) Tuqiri to tell all, but Lote refrained. He knew it would ruin his image. Crosscoder - denigrating the game of rugby only makes you look bitter and silly. More people in the world follow rugby as you know, and I don't think it does anyone any favours to rubbish the sports that others like.

Barnes was only a Rugby School player because of the school he attended- Ipswich Grammar- he had a choice to choose either league or union (and even swimming or golf), but he CHOSE league and so Bennett went on his normal way- developing the man, than the player- so Barnes only got a run now and again. The Broncos are known for their juniors, its very rare a Rugby Union player (through and through) is ever chosen for league, even Lote Tuquiri (who attended my school) was a League player- he only played a couple games of Union, but went back to League because of the running chances. All your big namers of late have had a lot of League experience, even Genia played league early on (he is from PNG).

There is another defector, Berrick Barnes. He came to the Broncos the same year as Karmichael Hunt (another defector of a different kind), and Wayne Bennett said if there was a national draft in league like AFL Berrick would be number 1. He defected supposedly to help the Reds get back to their former ways (winning at least 1/3 of their matches).

Crashy Tuqiri expectyed to lob back at the Tigers this year. The ARU did not have the intestinal fortitude to spell out why he was sacked.even his teammamtes and RUPA thought it was wrong, the way it was handled. Sailor made a major blunder and paid a high price.A certain gent by the name of C Shepherd a few years back allegedly vandalised a car after a birthday party. The same gent continued to play S14 ru and became a Wallaby.Consistency LOL. Matt Rogers came back to rl and is loving it. Blacklock came back to rl for a while, after his stint with the Tahs. Witt was such a player that ru club in NZ,thought he was more than just OK.If they were that stupid in assessment that is their problem. As a ru supporter you should be aware of the aleged racial slur when he was playing in Sydney . Quade Cooper has had more lives than a cat,and now we read about Kurtley Beale, making 2 Wallabies from the current tour in trouble. The ratio of "bad" boys more than matching rl it seems. Please dont' start on private school players that rl relies on.Suggest you look at former rl juniors such as Cross,Hoiles and even Will Chambers who now play ru,after attending private schools. These same bleeding private schools, take in kids from the bush and cities, with some of a rl background, but they can only play ru at the school.I happen to have been one of them. I think it says a lot about rl,they have the talented players, and little about the ARU,that the Melbourne S15 franchise is desperate to get a name player from rl to give the franchise some selling point.Says a lot about the depth of Oz union, bit like the current Wyangala dam. Novelty night is over, when Tuqiri originally went to ru,some of the RL community and others took some notice. Now threats of one or two hinting at switching, raises a yawn for most of us,as it did for SBW and Gasnier. What it suggests BTW that Lote will be going back to rl,in order to regularly receive and run with the ball. All too infrequent in his time with "yawnion"(sic).

Australian rugby doesn't want nor need him. He wasn't approached by rugby ( unlike what 'scribes' are suggesting). I do not want Thurston playing my game so no I am not wetting myself at the thought of him playing rugby - in fact is scares the bejesus out of me. Yes Barnes was a Bronco - he was part of that long production line of private school rugby players that the Broncos seem to rely on year in year out. They always come back to what they know best. Chambers is a case in point. Harrison is there on a 1 year contract as a bench player backup for Peter Kimlin who is potentially out for the season - hardly highlighting a big signing. What does that suggest if Lote goes back to diet rugby?

Crashy, I'm sorry, last time I read you were calling Thurston a 'slack jawed yokel', now you seem to be wetting yourself at the thought of rugby spending more money ear marked for junior development on him. I thought you blokes were meant to attend good schools? Berrick Barnes, player of the year, that's former Brisbane Bronco Berrick Barnes right? Mate, no one knows what Tuqiri was sacked for, the ARU spent lots to make sure that was the case. Yes, Harrison did retire, so he didn't have to serve the drug related suspension. Gee, what a signing, look at all those juniors coming through and pushing the has been for a place. Finally, Friend fell asleep in a cab, he didn't kick the windows out which is Cooper's party trick. Lock up your lap top.

If the Roosters are smart about this, they will give him the same punishment that Todd Carney had. Send him to a bush pub for work, and make him play for a bush team this season. Will provide him some great perspective of how hard real life can be, especially in a country town. He would come back a much better person than the one they sent away. Better than sacking him, and letting some other club pick him up next year.

Crashy just to put your straight, Witt was an awesome goal kicker but as a first grade Rugby League player he was out of his depth.
