The next big football code? Lingerie Football [video]

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

Yes my fellow Australians, courtesy of Fuel TV, I have seen the future of “football” in this country and it’s, err, well, interesting to say the least. The Lingerie Football League is coming, so get ready to rearrange your priorities not to mention viewing habits.

The LFL is, not surprisingly, an American invention that involves teams of women wearing revealing bikini outfits playing seven-on-seven tackle football.

Decked out in thin-looking shoulder pads, lacrosse-style helmets, bras and the tiniest of shorts the skimpy uniforms are giving fans, and especially males, a whole new reason to watch sport. Think of a cross between mud wrestling and beach volleyball and you’ll get the picture.

It does not require a great deal of imagination to work out the marketing strategy of the Lingerie Football League.

The branding is blatant – the teams have names like the San Diego Seduction, Dallas Desire and Los Angeles Temptation. The concept originated from the Super Bowl halftime alternative television special called the Lingerie Bowl (first aired during Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004) which draws big numbers of viewers as a pay-per-view event broadcast annually directly opposite the official Super Bowl halftime show.

The Lingerie Bowl has become a staple of Super Bowl Sunday festivities for millions of Americans.

There are seven women on each side of a field that is 50 yards long, 30 yards wide with “end zones” that are 8 yards deep. Play style is full-contact and a game consists of two 17-minute halves, separated by a 15-minute halftime. In the event of a tie, an 8-minute sudden-death overtime is played.

A ten team twin conference league commenced in the 2009-2010 season. The league schedule ran from the beginning of September 2009 to the end of January 2010, with one game each week. Teams played one game against each other team in their conference, 2 home and 2 away games.

The top two teams in each conference met in playoff games on February 4, 2010, in Miami, and the winners played in Lingerie Bowl VII on February 6, 2010.

The Western Conference Los Angeles Temptation defeated the Eastern Conference Chicago Bliss 27-14.

And thanks to Fuel TV with its daily highlights you too can now be captivated by these athletic dynamos.

All of which led me to consider potential Australian teams.

No doubt you’ll be switching from your League, Union, Soccer and AFL side to get out and support either the Adelaide Ass, Brisbane Bust, Hobart Hotties, Sydney Sirens or Melbourne Mist.

From what I’ve observed these outfits require plenty of backroom staff; masseurs, physiotherapists, coaches, waterboys, photographers, media reps and the like.

So if you’re looking for a career change keep an eye out, the future looks rosy.

Always open to suggestions Norm. I'd need to watch the matches then to get the results, I suppose.... ;-)

Holy shit. There actually quite serious. There's a lot of gimmick to it but when you actual watch these girls really go at it. I was expecting them to run around in some sort of fuffy version of the NFL. Some of the hits were incredible. :D

Wonder if the Women's AFL comp they have running in Melbourne is like this? Noone has said anything to the contrary, so I assume it is. Melbourne Vixens vs. Hawthorn Hornbags

if someone can invent a 'Wife' button for the remote control I'm all for it. Something like that 'Boss' button for your PC :-)

Does this really qualify to be in a sports article? If so, I've got a great idea for a professional wrestling story.

I watch it in the ads of Friday night Footy (whichever code I'm watching) it's pretty funny, the little interviews they do try to imply that they are taking it seriously, but in all reality it's good for a laugh and a quick perve too....

I thought this bombed out. The lingerie bowl use to run during the same time as the super bowl's half time entertainment but heard it was cancelled this year

Ive been a Facebook follower for some time. Havent yet seen a match yet. Most of my male friends pester me for details whenever they see it in my news feed. The AFL will not introduce it. 1. They are developing a national womens league (there was news somewhere about it), and 2. Australians care about the actual sport not the fashion of it.
