Selecting the Boks squad for the Tri Nations

Given my fellow Roar compatriots have compiled a potential Wallabies team, I thought I would take it upon myself to add some international flavour and have a go with the Boks.

This year (so far) has seen the Bulls extend their championship form from last year and the belated rise of the Stormers. Alarmingly, it has also seen the fall of the Sharks and the continuation of the cellar dwelling antics of the Cheetahs and Lions respectively.

Outside of the few notable exceptions, the Bok squad will emulate these fortunes.

The other consideration to be put into play is the extensive international fixtures list, which will necessitate some rotation and blooding of players. With that in mind, I have added a left field selection for up-and-comers or rejigging to accommodate certain players.

So onwards we go with the team list.

Loosehead – Incumbent: Tendai Mtwarira. Form: Guthro Steenkamp. Left Field: John Smit.
It could be the form of the Sharks but the Beast hasn’t exactly set the world alight. Looking at the form players, Guthro has been impressive around the park, making valuable metres, but there are still some questions on his scrumming prowess after being pretzeled on last year’s tour.

Outside chance is that Smit will continue his ballet in the front ranks and move to the left, as per the Sharks this season.

Hooker – Incumbent: Bismarck du Plessis. Form: Bismarck du Plessis, Tian Liebenberg, Gary Botha. Left Field: Adrian Strauss
You could add Smit to the mix, but I think it’s in his best interest to be tied down to a single position and at the moments that’s away from Benn Robinson on the left side of the scrum.

Bismarck still has the inside lane, but I really like what I see in the energetic Liebenberg, who scrums really well and offers great link play.

The same can be said of Botha, with both losing out on the breakdown stakes to the penalty prone Sharks hooker.

Tight Head – Incumbent: John Smit. Jannie du Plessis Form: Brok Harris
There haven’t exactly been many standout performers in this position. So, providing he learns not to throw looping passes in his own 22, then I would plumb for Harris.

Brok has scrummed well and loves getting around the park to make his tackles and take the ball up.

Locks – Incumbent: Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Andries Bekker, Danie Rossouw. Form: Andries Bekker, Left Field Flip van de Merwe, Steve Sykes
Been a fairly low key season from Matfield, which might have a lot to do with his partner in crime being sidelined. Regardless, the heir apparent has put his hand up big time.

The question will be, heir to whom? Given PdV’s willingness to play Bekker as substitute to Botha it would imply he will partner Matfield.

Personally, I see Bekker as Matfield’s replacement and Botha’s someone like Flip van de Merwe or maybe one of the other engine room type locks such as Fondse to make the hard yards.

A Sykes, Bekker combo would also bring a lot to the table providing both aren’t standing in the centres together.

Openside Flank – Incumbent: Heinrich Brussouw/Schalk Burger. Form: Francois Louw, Cobus Grobbelaar. Left Field: Deon Stegmann
With Heinrich injured at the start of the season, it’s hard to tell if he would have adapted his game sufficiently to be as effective within the new interpretations.

Regardless, there have been a few players who have put their hand up. Stegmann has been very good but a bit of a yellow card magnet.

Louw within the Burger/Vermeulen trio has been outstanding.

For giving his all and still having to do the losing captain speech week on week, poor old Cobus surely deserves a spot on the pine. My guess is that that it will be Burger at open side, with either Louw/Stegmann as backup.

Blindside Flank – Incumbent: Juan Smith. Form: Schalk Burger, Dewald Potgieter Left field: Jean Deysel
Juan Smith, the unsung hero of the Bok pack, gets through an immense amount of work in the loose and rucks while being a genuine line-out option.

Deysel is blockbusting ball carrier but he needs more game time. Dewald is to my mind having a break through season and is the future.

Number 8 – Incumbent: Piere Spies. Form: Pierre Spies, Duane Vermeulen
Spies is a shoe-in for the starting spot. Kankowski would have been in contention for the backup spot, but for now it’s hard to look past Vermeulen.

Scrum-half – Incumbent: Fourie du Preez. Form: Fourie du Preez, Dewaldt Duvenhage. Left Field: Ruan Pienaar
The mantle has been slipping on Fourie a bit. Either that or he is returning to the realms of mere mortals, once more.

I would like to see Ruan playing more at scrum-half the position the brought him to the limelight in the first place.

Until then, though, I think we can be pretty happy with Dewaldt, who brings a very snappy service to the table that has kept the Stormers on the front foot.

Flyhalf – Incumbent: Morne Steyn. Form: Peter Grant, Morne Steyn.
As per usual, the South African flyhalf cupboard is full of spider webs. It doesn’t help to develop talent when two of the countries Super 14 teams are playing non-eligible players in Spencer and Goode. Which basically leaves Olivier, Grant and Steyn.

Olivier has promise but has failed to deliver. Grant has come on leaps and bounds, always keen to attack the line and give the ball some air, he has improved his overall kicking considerably.

Morne, though, is still the country’s premier flyhalf, but seems to be having a dip in form. I don’t think the dip will be enough to remove him from his position

Inside Centre – Incumbent: Wynand Olivier. Form: Wynand Olivier, Doppies le Grange Left field: Juan de Jongh, Whitehead, Swanepoel
I was really hoping Eberhson would make the step up this season as by all accounts, the kid has talent to burn.

Unfortunately, he also plays for the Cheetahs which is never going to help your back-line chances.

So that really leaves us with Olivier – the poor mans Jean de Villiers and le Grange. Ok, that was harsh on Olivier, who knows a gap when he sees one but lacks a bit of outright pace, just ask Higginbotham.

Le Grange on a stats base should be the first choice centre by a mile, except he is also part of a team that leaks tries and there are questions about how many were through his channel.

De Jongh has had some success here but it is openly acknowledged he is a retread outside who can only pass to his left.

So Olivier it is, with a specialist like Swanepoel or Whitehead backing up

Outside Centre – Incumbent: Jaque Fourie. Form: Jaque Fourie Left field: Juan de Jongh.
Jaque Fourie nuff said. De Jongh to backup

Wings – Incumbents: Bryan Habana, JP Pieterson. Form: G van de Heever, Killian Left field: Nokwe
There are a dearth of wings in South Africa, some with blistering pace, others with great skills. Very few have the complete package, which is why Habana will again lurk on the left wing.

The right wing leaves something to be desired. JP hasn’t exactly shone this season so I would like to see van de Heever in the mix.

Fullback – Incumbent: ?. Form: Zane Kirchner, Joe Pieterson Left field: Killian, Aplon, Lambie
For position where there was very little depth on Jantes injury and Montgomery’s retirement we suddenly have a wealth of talent: the solid if somewhat unspectacular Kirchner and then the talents of the Percy clone Joe Pieterson, Killian, Lambie and the diminutive ghost that is Gio “the cockroach”.

I feel it’s a year to early for Killian, so Pieterson to start and Aplon from the bench to cover FB and wing.

So the 22 is the following:
1 – Smit (Sharks)
2 – du Plessis (Sharks)
3 – Harris (Stormers)
4 – Botha (Bulls)
5 – Matfield (Bulls)
6 – Burger (Stormers)
7 – Smith (Cheetahs)
8 – Spies (Bulls)
9 – du Preez (Bulls)
10 – Steyn (Bulls)
11 – Habana (Stormers)
12 – Olivier (Bulls)
13 – Fourie (Stormers)
14 – van de Heever (Bulls)
15 – Pieterson (Stormers)
16 – Steenkamp (Bulls)
17 –Liebenburg (Stormers)
18 – Bekker (Stormers)
19 – Louw (Stormers)
20 – Aplon (Stormers)
21 – Pienaar (Sharks)
22 – de Jongh

Not much different to the current test team, but a bit of mix and match with some of the players mentioned will go a long way to getting the balance of new blood and results.

Thoughts?

Love the Darren Anderton reference and agree with you on CJ. A very large bench warmer in Cardiff

Vermuelen has played on the blind to cover Juan when he was the Cheetahs so definitely an option although I would say he is developing into a very fine 8 but that sort of versatility is a good thing come nation selection. Would also like to see Liebenberg in the mix but its only going to happen when Smit is dedicated to a single position rather than the prop who covers hooker. Then by IRB regulation we would need hooker and prop cover in say BJ Botha/Brok harris and then Liebenberg for hooker

I used to rate Alberts but in the Sharks team he just looks like a bit of a plodder..not that we have a whole lot going at 8 right now beyond Spies and Vermuelen. Kanko sure but like many I agree that he struggles to bring his Super 14 A game into the test arena. If you had to stretch for another 8 then - Danie Rossouw, tore up the Lions on the weekend and is a great impact lock and credible 8 but please no where else.

I would like to see a blooding/resting of players strategy where the key guys are mixed and matched with the existing combinations. This I think will be the only way to ensure continuity while meeitng the objectives of depth, rest and results. The latter very important in the Republic For instance the Bekker/Botha/Matfield conundrum. I would start the Matfield/Botha combo with Bekker on the bench. You could then sub Botha/Matfield off (the former in likelihood due to fitness) for Bekker around the 50min. At the same time you load the bench with Vermuelen and F Louw so that with Bekker on you also have the option of moving Burger to the blind for Smith and Vermuelen for Spies. Half the 8 are now from the Stormers and should be a cohesive unit. You could then do it another way where you have a Bekker/Botha combo with a loose forward unit of Burger, Smith, Spies and then bring on Potgieter for Smith and Stegmann for Burger. The key I suppose if you are going to change the makeup of the team in game to use existing combinations from the Boks or Super 14. So if Grobbelar got a run then Smith and Spies should be on etc etc So yes - I would expect some of the key players to be rested/rotated, I just hope its in the correct manner to not screw with the results and the replacements careers

I like your team Rusty, especially the up and comer Van De Heever on the right wing (Best haircut since Percy) Myself i'd be tempted to start grooming Juans replacement now, and maybe out of left field but I'd like to see Vermeulen on the Blind. Hes got to be the strongest forward in the S14. Singlehandedly held off the Blues forward pack during a ruck and is a force at the contact area. If Brussouw is going to be the open I think he'd be a great partner for him. In saying that though Potgeiter has been playing well too so could easily slip in. Also i think Leibenburg has done enough for a start in June sometime, same with Aplon

I think BJ Botha, and Kruger should both be in the reckoning for the Boks squad, followed closely by Jean de Villiers who finally has picked his season game up for Munster and will have his mettle tested in the final games of the season where he'll be remembered either as a Munster player of note, or else as a 'too little, too late' tagalong. His last minute try against Edinburgh showed the player he can be, much more to be done to get his name engraved in Thomond folklore. Van der Linde has blowen hot and cold for Leinster since he joined - largely because he's done the best impression of a sicknote that I've seen since Darren Anderton kicked a ball in anger for Tottenham Hotspur. He is just too flaky and I can't see P de Villiers relying on him for anything except to fill a slot for the 'annoying fixture' in Cardiff in June.

Good team Rusty. I don't think Matfield and Bekker should ever play together in a team again. It didn't work when de Villiers tried it before. But,Bekker has improved a lot and is playing a more 'enforcer' game lately,so I reckon de Villiers will try it out again.I reckon Matfield will be rested a lot and will get rotated with Bekker through this season.Flip van der Merwe should get rotated with Bakkies for the no 4 spot.Four wonderful locks and please no Fondse.Juandre Kruger will definately be in the mix after the World Cup and can also be used in the same way we use Danie Rossouw from the bench, having played loose forward for the Bulls. One player you didn't mention is Willem Alberts for number 8,who I rate and think should get a chance.BJ Botha is a must for the Boks if we want to defend our title next year in New Zealand and should get game time this year with the Boks.Frans Steyn is our best full back by miles but for now it should be Kirchner. For the end of the year matches in Europe de Villiers should give all the senior Boks a rest and try out new combinations with the players knocking on the door - give them much needed experience.I don't care if we lose some matches and forget about the Grand Slam - the management will have a very good idea after that tour who can go with the Boks to New Zealand and our stars need a rest.

Rusty - given the noises from SA about resting players, do you think players like Matfiled, Botha (although he is well rested now), John Smith, and FdP will be rested this year? Well structured and informative article. Must have been to Michaelhouse?

I also think Matfield has been pedestrian and he might be suffering from "too old" syndrome. Play Bekker with Bakkies. 4Ks has to be good right?

Great point Bondiplage, however i have it on good info that Rusty is indeed located in Wallaby territory. I would speculate that potentially, albeit rating very highly the excitement machine that is the 'cockroach', his skills may be tested at international level. Other than Jason Robinson (at 5'8" and 81kgs) i can't think of a recent successful undersized FB. Although I think he has been safe under the highball (limited viewing), defensively sound, and a great runner of the ball - most teams have made it a point to not kick the ball to the Stomers willingly and thei potent backline. Great analysis though Rusty, and i would go as far to say that Olivier is a poor man's Warwick Capper. I can't wait to see Quade Cooper show Morne Steyne how a class half plays head-to-head.

RUSTY - keep it coming, guy. This is a Wallaby-centric forum - I'm a Wallaby fan myself - but we need input from Saffers - and Kiwis - on their possible test squads. Fans who aren't based in NZ or SA only get to see what's shown on the box, and that's not nearly enough to get a fix on what's happening. On TV we only get to see what the director chooses to show us. Inside input is invaluable. Tell some more of your mates to get onto this forum and gives us their opinions on how the Boks will do in the June and November tests.

In addition to all the traits you've listed, Aplon also tackles like a demon - the antithesis of Rose. It's difficult to say whether he could cut it as a Test level player, but considering Kirchner (poor man's Jantjes) is our incumbent fullback...
