Ode to the Brumbies

By itsuckstobeyou / Roar Pro

There was movement at the stadium, for the word had passed around
That the chance to play the finals got away.
A young squad of wild bush horses – or Brumbies as they were crowned,
Had fallen to Steve Walsh and Lyndon Bray.
All the tried and noted critics from papers near and far
Were beaming in their homesteads overnight,
For the Waratahs love winning where the wild bush horses are,
And the critics watch a ‘Tahs win with delight.

“The halves were flat and greedy and Hoiles gave the ref a spray”
The critics said “Your side will not get through
For next Saturday in Canberra – you’ve got the Reds to play,
The finals are a dream to such as you”.
So the Reds they stood in waiting – they would be there at the end –
“I think we’ve got a chance,” Matt Giteau said;
“I’ll get Steve Walsh kicked out and then a real ref can attend,
Their faces, like their jerseys, will be red”.

So Gits set up some chairs inside the Brumbies media wing
Where the best and boldest journos took their place,
“If Steve Walsh ref’s we won’t show up” was the climax for his sling –
The mud stuck somewhat thick to Walsh’s face.
They halted for a moment as SANZAR swung their dreaded lash,
But they knew that there was still a game to play,
They bolted home, a four-try win, and the Reds had done their dash –
This time the wild bush horses got away.

Now down the nation’s capital where politician’s kids get raised
Where porn is rife and teenagers get high,
Where the air is clear as crystal, except when fireworks are ablaze
At twenty-firsts, across the frosty sky,
And where around the round-a-bouts the tourists cannot find their way
Despite the fact the roads are clearly signed,
There’s a team of wild bush horses who’ve remembered how to play,
And they’ve got semi-finals on their mind.

Whats your view on the Reds this weekend FOS ... any chance? I am not completely pessimistic IF they can get Van, Weeks and Braid on the park, but certainly what I had been fearing ion the forwards all season long eventuated on Saurday.

I read somewhere today (either SMH, Canberra Times or the Terror), that Smith was going to have a run at training this week and see how it went. I reckon painkillers will be at a premium, but would love to see him there for one last hurrah.....win, lose or draw!

Well said KGW and fully agree. Lets hope we see the same passion and teamwork from the Brumbies in their remaining two fixtures (Highlanders and Crusaders). Their world class players - Elsom, Giteau and Moore - need to show Saturday's good performances was not just a one off to keep hold of their Wallaby spots and Chisolm needs to show the same fire as he did on the weekend.

Agree Brett re Brumbs' 12. Tyrone hasn't convinced me all year. To'omua at 10 and MG at 12 is what the Brumbies need to spark the back-line to complement the forwards' excellent work. They also need to stop having too many "captains"; seems like everyone rushes up to take a quick dad every time they are awarded a penalty or free-kick. This is the problem they've been having all season; too many Chiefs, as some have correctly pointed out.

ballboy, I'd reckon heaven, earth, and a truckload of painkillers will be moved to get Smith and Mortlock on the paddock this weekend... Toomua was doing a lot of jumping around just down in front of us every time the Brumbies got close to the line, so hopefully he might be a chance too. I think someone else is needed in No.12 rather quickly...

Was under the impression Smith and Toomua were a few weeks away yet, unfortunately. As for Mortlock - they have been saying "next game" then ruling him out for four weeks now.

I don't think Smith will be back but Mortlock yes. Haven't heard about Toomua

Very true Ballboy, However the Reds did not go into this season with the same hype and star studded line up that the Brumbies did, if anything the Reds stars are just beginning to glow. The Reds have beaten every other team in the top four albeit they were all home games. Local derbies always bring a different atmosphere to the game and the intensity is usually a step up. The fact this was a trial game by default also had a huge impact on this match and gave the Brumbies that extra incentive to play and play well yes. The Reds have had a much more impressive season than the Brumbies have had especially when you look at all the factors in the equation. Congratulations to the Brumbies a much deserved win but they certainly aren't the first team to beat the Reds this year now are they

How can you guys say on one hand that the Brumbies can't get carried away because they've had one good win all season 'one win doesn't make a season' and yet the cherished Reds have the same win / loss ratio. now it's all about the Reds losing two locks and suffering because of injuries. The Brumbies have more on the injury bench than the Reds but haven't used that as an excuse. A season is determined by where you finish at the end of the race. It is about building momentum, winning the crucial games and not falling to pieces at the business end of the season. we'll see where they all lie at the end of the next round. And don't get me wrong...I'm not a Reds hater. I've loved their work and given them praise all year.

Plagiarism has been a passion of mine since my uni days. It took me two bottles of wine an a half-a-dozen beers just to do 4 stanzas. Paterson must have been blind by the time he finished.

So you would prefer the Brumbies deliberately lost for "the greater good". Australian rugby has never done the Brumbies many favours. The Reds will make the finals if they deserve it. What they certainly do not deserve is a padded run.

One win does not make a season. I would be interested to see how most S14 teams would fare after losing both of their locks in the first 20. Well played to the Brumbies, but i think the Brumbies fans on this site have been saving all of their Brumbies love for such an occasion and the veritable outpouring is becoming a bit too much for my liking. Tone it down a bit lads. You cannot honestly tell me that the Brumbies have played like a finals contender with any form of consistency this season.
