I recall the tests for exactly the same reason as you, but I don’t recall the injury, nor can I find any evidence of it. Btw, what is funny about that and what does it prove? Why the ‘lol’?

Surely if you only have ‘peanuts’ to spend then you do not go and throw all those peanuts at a single right back?

What is Wenger’s net spend over the same period? What about David Moyes too?

More Liverpool drama: it's time for Rafa to go

Lol. Great call.

Ode to the Brumbies

Erm… no he didn’t. Did you miss the Autumn tests? The problem with playing the big man is that there is always someone bigger and better…

‘if you are in an opposing team he’s just hit you so hard your fillings are all loose and your false teeth all come out with your mouthguard now.’

Lol. Unless you are Simon Shaw or Lionel Nallet.

I don’t recall that either. Frankly, I’d be surprised were Australia to even get out of their group.

Socceroos, England will be an epic encounter

What does Phil Waugh have to do with the failures of the Waratahs?

Are Waratahs playing to win the Super 14?

‘Tom Varndell, Paul Sackey and Ugo Monye were all schoolboy sprinters and allegedly ran sub 10.6 times. Interestingly, sprint coach Margot Wells (wife of Allan Wells) disputes this.’

I didn’t say anything about where the players ran those times, James, however I would have thought the implication was clear: that the players ran those times during a sprint meet.

Personally I feel that the Waratahs have had one of the best (if not the best) Super scrums over the past two/three seasons. There is obviously a significant difference between trying to conning the ref and genuinely lacking the ability to scrummage and Deans is hardly going to ignore Robinson and TPN on the basis of some broad statistics.

Waratahs and Brumbies are scrum bludgers

A showing of loyalty. How refreshing. Good for him.

Pocock sees best future at the Force

Mick, I wouldn’t write off any Australian front rows just yet. I agree with your comment about generational change but (and I say this as an Englishman) I firmly believe that the current crop of young props are very good. Some props may not be as strong a scrummager as Robinson is, for example, but I believe that Daley and Palmer could step up to test level and not be overawed. Australian front row play is certainly in a better position than years gone by when Panaho, Stiles and Dyson were picking up test caps. Conversely, the NZ and SA Super front rows aren’t setting the world alight and I struggle to see much strength in depth in their ranks.

Reds can win the Super 14 title; the Waratahs can't

Glenn, if you cast your mind back England ran the ball in both the 1991 and 2003 finals.

Tahs come out on top in dour Super rugby derby

Only during certain phases of play and never on the team sheet, Peter.

Brumbies need optimism

Two brief points, sheek:

‘He’s lifted the forward technique, especially in the frontrow.’

Surely the scrum coach and forwards coach did that, and not Deans?

‘He’s improved the overall skill set.’

Has he? I personally felt that the Australian backs have looked pretty ordinary compared to previous seasons, and surely Burgess is a case in point: he spent months with the Wallabies and still can’t pass a ball.

Reds can win the Super 14 title; the Waratahs can't

I’m surprised at the absence of Jervois. He spent so much time and energy demanding that his ‘fellow’ Australian fans stop being so OTT about the Reds and Australian rugby in general, and yet there has been two excellent results for the Reds and the Force today. I would imagine he’s feeling very content, especially given how the Force toppled the perennial NZ heavyweights. Much to be proud about. I thoroughly enjoyed both games.

As an aside I thought the Greek music being played during the video ref was an excellent addition. I’d like to see something similarly light hearted during such lapes in play in the Guinness Premiership.

Jubilant Reds dispute denied try

‘I dont think the 6 Nations would let Argentina in, they would been winning the comp every year.’

You seriously think?

Stretching rugby's professional frontiers

I’ve started quoting Kevin Keegan recently. I think it’s due to the temporary absence of plane fuel in the air. Must be affecting my brain chemistry. I’ve fallen completely out of love with Spurs. Great when they’re going well, but no Plan B. I’m also fed up of seeing ‘Arry on Sky News every single day.

Connacht are the Big Cs.

Dublin Conference to get rugby going foward

I would love it if we could beat them. Love it. He’s gone down in my estimation. Manchester United haven’t won this yet, I’d love it if we beat them… Sorry… I meant to say I’d love it if The Big C’s qualified for the HC. I’d love it.

Dublin Conference to get rugby going foward

I think that under Laporte and Lievremont the France rugby team has tried to be English, IMO. Last season NZ tried to run the ball (maybe to their detriment), but they persisted with that style. I cannot recall the last season that the French national team consistently ran the ball, and that is odd given the powerful packs they have produced over the past decade.

Do we talk a better game of running rugby than we actually play?

Oops… LOL. I’d genuinely forgotten it was an Anglo-Welsh competition.

Rooney and Sonny Bill help put Toulon on top

‘And another irony is that Biarritz who are/were the most inherenetly top French side over recent seasons have played some good stuff in this years HC and I watched them against Perpignan and they tried to move the ball around there.’

Must be down to Balshaw, Colin…

I disagree, Adrien. The Guinness Premiership has been very entertaining over the past two months. The recent English club competition final was even complimented by Spiro Zavos. The HC has also been very, very good. In contrast to to that I think the Top 14 is generally too conservative. The 6N wasn’t great but largely that was due to the tactics utilised by France. Scotland, Ireland, Wales (and England in parts) attempted to throw the ball about. IMO, the 6N was perceived as not that entertaining due to the victors, just as the way that SA’s 3N victory led a lot of pundits to render that specific tournament boring and negative.

Btw, scarlet didn’t call anybody a wanker, and I’m not sure that any English clubs are after any league players either.

If we ignore the broader aspects of Super expansion, Hammer, I fail to see the point that the Force flattened all of the other teams. 2006 was a reasonably strong season for the Australian Super sides and the Force only attracted a handful of quality players. In 2006 the Brumbies finished 6th, and in 2007 the Brumbies finished 5th. The only team who struggled in 07 was the Waratahs (who lost the most players if I’m remember correctly?) but in 2008 they bounced back up to 2nd.

Further, the Brumbies and Waratahs are currently packed full of stars. The Reds probably have greater quality in their roster than they have had for most of the 2000s, and yet the only side looking good is the Reds. Therefore, the key for me is coaching, selection and age-group development. The Force was always going to be a long-term project and to that extent there are signs of success. A lot of young Australians have been given game time this season, but we must also not forget players like Hodgson, Pocock, Brown & O’Connor.
