Live stream of Baa Baas game one for the purists

By gatesy / Roar Guru

I loved the live stream of the Barbarians game on Fox. What a great way to watch rugby. No commentators, no instant replays, no going upstairs to the video ref – it was just like being there (TV stations, take note).

The only off-putting thing was that Facebook panel on the right. Some of the tweets are on the money, but most are not. It’s a major distraction when you don’t want to watch full-screen.

Fox, lose that and you won’t suffer one bit.

What a great innovation. No doubt they’ll improve it, with all of the bells and whistles. However, I hope they don’t change it too much – we can get by without commentators or instant replays, or stats and analysis.

I think we need to thank Fox Sports for streaming the game. Being stuck over here in teh Rugby desert without FOXtel it gets bleak after S14 finishes. Anything thta gets us access to our game is good. I was pleasntly surprised at the image quality, but most of all the absence of commentators was great. The idea of the refs mike in the background is great. There may be a need to give a naughty language warning cos on the Sports Ears we hear some occasionally rude words. Seriously it was great please can we have more.

I didn't write that piece to *defend* the situation of the match not being available outside of Australia; I wrote it to *explain* it. There's an important difference there. I agree that there is no good reason why the ARU shouldn't make it available outside of Australia. But the point here is not that the law or lawyers are to blame -- it's the ARU (and I can't stress this point enough). The problem is not with the law but with the way the rights holder -- in this case the ARU -- chooses to exercise its legal right. Copyright law simply gives the author of a work (the original rights holder -- in this case the ARU) the right to *choose* how to exploit his copyright. What he then actually does with it is a matter for him. So don't go blaming the law if someone chooses to exercise his copyright in a dumb-arsed way. The way the original rights holder will exercise his copyright will largely come down to considerations of financial interest -- in other words how can I make the most money out of selling broadcast rights. It's not the fault of the law or lawyers if the match is not available outside of Australia. It's the ARU's fault for not *making* it available outside of Australia. The choice is entirely with the ARU in this regard. Blame not the law but the ARU for the way it chose to exercise its legal right (i.e. only selling Foxtel the right to stream in Australia and and not the right to stream worldwide) . There is nothing in the law stopping the ARU from selling Foxtel worldwide internet streaming rights or indeed for that matter giving away its broadcast rights for free to all and sundry. That it doesn't do this is a choice it makes because it doesn't believe it to be in its own commercial interest. So direct your complaints to the ARU and what it perceives to be in its own commercial interest and NOT to the law or lawyers. I suggest you write to the ARU telling them that would like it to make games like this available for free online to viewers outside of Australia. I'd be interested in what kind of response you get. Finally, in answer to Nashi's question: What you suggest would be perfectly possible from a legal point of view. The ARU could sell the worldwide streaming rights to someone (eg Foxtel) and then enter into contract with that company that it actually makes the stream available worldwide. In other words the ARU sells the broadcast rights on the condition that the purchaser actually broadcasts the match and a failure to broadcast the match would be a breach of contract. No problem there at all as long as someone is willing to acquire the rights on those terms. Another possibility would simply be for the ARU to forget about finding someone else to stream the match and simply do it itself via its own website. There's nothing in the law that says the ARU has to sell the rights to someone else -- but the reason it chooses to act the way it does is largely for commercial and not legal reasons.

Geez Joh, the last thing we need is more lawyers in Canberra..... Still, I reckon its up to ARU as the rights holder to say "use it or lose it". We'll sell you the right but if you cannot commit to broadcasting it we reserve the right to stream. Can't be that hard from a legal perspective surely.

The techo stuff... As an experiment it was a very low key glimpse of the future. The graphics were slighty poorer and choppier in comparison to the Running Rugby (RR) site for S14, but at least it was live. I had trouble making out the player's numbers whilst on RR it is almost Standard Def TV (1kbps) and quite watchable on a 46" screen. When NBN comes through we can expect Fox and others to raise the resolution to SD at least. Its interesting how much you can achieve with a single camera and I must confess in some regard it told you more about the strategic elements of the game than the constant director cuts between close up and wide angle. In that way it was very like being at the game. You had a much better chance of seeing the space out wide as a result! Perhaps for the next one Fox could chuck in one more camera and give us the option to switch between the two views, so we can see what's happening in tight, oh and rewind (which I didn't attempt) would be good as well so we can do our own replays of bits if we want. All of this should be perfectly achievable technically. I was actually thinking they should have one camera pointed at the scoreboard and have it is a picture in picture so you see the match clock and the score. Then they managed to remember to put the graphics on. Still the OB can't have cost them more than a couple of free tickets, a few gold awards points at Hardly Normal and borrowing someones 3G Internet Card. If they sold a couple of Bundy ads at half time they coulda made a motza! If 10K were at the ground you would have to expect the on-line audience would have topped that at least. Onto the game.... HSM had a great game and was obviously itching to have a go. Between KB and JOC I'd probably pick JOC first. In general the AUS backs looked more fluent than the Poms but they suffered in the forwards. When it was loose and fast the Aussies were fine, as soon as the grunt work started we fell away somewhat, which just proves our 3rd string front row probably isn't of international standard, what a surprise! Fainga and Chambers were serviceable in the backs but I don't know what Robbie was really getting excited about there. Barnes still cannot take the ball to the line like Larkham used to and Cooper does. Valentines service seemed OK, but that's as good as it got. At least he didn't give away any penalties that I remember. Anyway it was a pleasant mid-week diversion. The question is whether it indicates a stylistic difference between the two countries and that question will have to be answered on Saturday, for which I cannot wait!

Further to match att, I'd be really interested as to how many people watched the stream on foxsports. I thought that it would be really easy to measure (website hits or something - help me out here propeller heads!)

Hey Sammy I have built a Windows Media PC, which bascially means I have Windows 7 Ulitmate running on a pc in the lounge! It comes with an app (Media Center) that I have my antenae connected to (Works like Foxtel IQ for the FTA channels) If you have a newish TV all you'd really need to do is hook up your laptop to your TV, should be a VGA or HDMI port in the back of the TV. Depends if you have a laptop or desktop and what connection you have on there (Some of the newer laptops have HDMI ports which would do sound as well). You would still need to get the sound out of the PC or listen to it via the PC if you use the VGA option which would be how your Desktop is currently connected to your monitor.... As for the picture, that will depend on the graphics card. Hope that makes sense?
