Burglary charge against Quade Cooper dropped

By News / Wire

A charge of burglary against Wallabies rugby union star Quade Cooper has been dropped in a Gold Coast court.

Cooper, 22, did not appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Friday, where police offered no evidence against him on allegations he stole two laptops from a residence in Surfers Paradise on December 6.

The late night incident had threatened to derail the young fly-half’s career.

Cooper’s lawyers said the withdrawal of the charge followed completion of a justice mediation process with the complainants, which was conducted through the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

Director of Chesterfield Lawyers, Dan McManus, said mediation was an accepted part of the Queensland justice system.

“It can only take place with the willing participation and consent of all parties, including the Queensland Police Service,” he said.

“Justice mediation is a confidential process and the parties cannot elaborate on the content or details of the events nor the process which has led to this outcome.

“Due to the confidentiality constraints of the justice mediation process, it is not appropriate to comment publicly further now that this matter has been disposed of, and no further comment can be offered.”

Once again, celebrity stands in the way of justice running its proper course. So thrilled that human decency once again takes a back seat to sports status.

I'm delighted for Quade but mifffed. Joh4Canberra and I had a somewhat extended discussion of the case. Now it's shrouded in confidentiality.

Geez if it was a league player the Roarers would be incandescent with rage. How dare the authorities not let the law take its course and the snivilling little toe-rag burgler get what he justly deserves. Something about good for the goose-----

From Quade's profile on the QRU website: When my rugby career finishes I'd like to: Let's hope it never finishes http://www.redsrugby.com.au/library/reds_players/cooper,_quade,67242.html/section/40810 I wonder if he will update that now?

I'm pretty sure Quade was keen to avoid being locked up for a number of years.

Excellent. Hopefully Cooper can stay injury free and carve up for the Reds again next year.
