Canterbury piste off over Sonny Bill skiing

By AP / Wire

Rugby league convert Sonny Bill Williams has been reprimanded by his Canterbury provincial rugby team for skiing while on injury leave.

Former NRL star Williams joined Canterbury after signing with the New Zealand Rugby Union earlier this year but has yet to play a match in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship because of knee and hamstring injuries.

A Canterbury Rugby Union spokesman confirms Williams had not been given clearance to go on a skiing trip on the day of Canterbury’s fourth-round NPC match against Tasman.

The spokesman says Williams has been “reminded of his responsibilities.”

Williams quit league in 2008 to play rugby for Toulon, then rejected a huge offer from the club to try and play for the All Blacks.

Yeh I'm One them haters, he should never got a look in. All Blacks are what they are because they are a Star team willing to put their bodies on the line for each other, Black Jersey and there country. they don't need a guy just looking to increase his next pay cheque. If he wants to be an All Black he should at lest have to do two years, not just the NPC. Be a different story if he had all ready played NPC and Super Rugby gone overseas and comeback, but He hasn't hes just cheapening the Jersey

Why would you leave the south of France, making good coin to move to Christchurch on the off-chance you will make it for the Blacks. They lose World Cups all the time anyhow. He should have played for the French.

@Altona .. As mentioned If he "dominates" enough and proves himself, awesome! Stop being such so negative. This guy has the potential to be phenomenal - note, "potential" - and I hope he steps up to the plate. If not, too bad for him, someone better will get the job. Though as I suggest, I reckon his dodgy looking agent had an auto-selection for NH tour clause in there somewhere. You'd hope Ted & Co put some form of required performance in there though. If Nonu went down we need another blockbuster at 12 I say. We have finesse at 13 but 12 is working for us and has done since Umaga. 'cept when Nonu was still a relative newby in 07. I wanna see this guy play and see for real if he has what it takes - despite all the negativity about it. Too many bitter haters out there.;)

You would think he should have been at the game supporting the boys but who knows? Maybe with the circus entourage the management didn't want the team disrupted... As it was they botched the job on Tasman anyways. I wanna see this guy make the NH tour but he is gonna need to dominate or the NZRFU will forever be wearing this one. Best guess is his name is already on the squad sheet for October though. (PS: I reckon the Canty boys hate him. )

"Williams has been “reminded of his responsibilities.”" Fair enough - I keep forgetting that he is only about 7 years old, up top. Bit like our bloke - or Parramatta league's bloke - really. It's probably just as well he is so very special and didn't have to sign up for an apprenticeship, like other young adults. He'd never lose his way to the pay office, but he'd be flat out remembering to turn up to his tech classes.

The air time this bloke gets is phenomenal. Probably not the wisest thing to do when you cant take the field.

SBW still has family in NZ (including his mum). I imagine he's already copped an earful from her. In any case, SBW's contract only runs for the ITM Cup. If he doesn't wash up, they'll cut him loose after that (or even before!). If he does measure up, they will activate a clause in his contract so that he can play S15. If he does well there then they MIGHT activate his AB clause
