Don't interview players at the half

By Swear / Roar Rookie

Why do rugby broadcasts include half-time interviews with players? Why does an interviewer ask a player to provide a breakdown of the game so far? How do we benefit from this info?

Shouldn’t something else be happening at this time? I want my Australian player, whoever he may be, to go straight from the field to the changeroom – no interruptions!

He has important things to do.

Interviewer, you are slowing him up. He’s got people to talk to – important people like teammates, coaches – you know.

Maybe he has to get in the ear of one of the boys and your question throws his strategy and timing out – who knows? But what we do know is that he needs to be somewhere!

10 minutes is not a long time! Thinking there is time to ‘have a meaningless chat’ about possession and territory is crazy. R Kafer is a culprit.

Kafe, stop interviewing these guys – if you want something to do, run behind them at the half, call them ‘weak as piss’ – but do not slow them up.

Given most of the interviwers are former international players, you would think that they have more self respect or at least respect for the game, the situation or the players. Why don't the players just walk by? John O'Neill where are you....oh counting the money, sorry.

Would love to have the camera in the changerooms for the halftime chat. Will never, happen, obviously.

Next thing you know the sideline commentator will be yelling "tweeted" instructions to the players from the arm-chair coaches at home - or sending them directly to the players - don't the backs carry iphones in their pockets next to their combs?

Nah...it's a great idea because I like the challenge of trying to figure out what the hell these blokes are saying. Actually it's got me thinking that next week we should interview Richie at 1/2 time for 'his thoughts on the game' and prevent him getting into the sheds. ;)

Agree also. Besides, only minutes before he was interviewed, Genia made a complete hash of it by kicking out on the full which lead to a series of plays resulting in a Bok's try on half time, letting them back in the game. Genia should have been first off the fileld to look at himself in the mirror. He's hardly going to admit what was obvious to us all.

I agree 100%. It ruins the distance between the spectator and the spectacle as we want to watch what is unfolding and make our own minds up. It is very artificial and awkward. It makes the viewer feel they are interfering in the match and it makes the whole match look like a pantomime put on for our benefit as if we could just order the players to do what we want. The game have a life of its own to be dramatic and the half-time interview interferes with this.

It's an illusion created by the broadcasters to trick viewers into thinking they (the broadcasters) are an integral part of any unfolding drama, rather than merely an observer (broadcaster) of the event.
