The REAL hoodoo the Wallabies need to fix

By CraigB / Roar Guru

With the Wallabies’ win over the All Blacks on the weekend, there has been celebration in Oz, while many Kiwi posters have countered with the ‘dead rubber’ defence.

There has been much talk about the hoodoo being off the Aussies’ backs and that this could be a watershed game in their attempt to bring back Bill in 2011.

While this may all be true, the All Blacks’ hoodoo actually pales in comparison to another recent hoodoo that has infested the Australian side. That is the hoodoo of not being able to backup a good win with another good win.

All too often in recent times we have seen this side perform against the odds or put in a memorable performance and the next week be truly deplorable.

During a world cup, this has far a greater risk of derailing a campaign than any bogey side.

The fact is that the Wallabies are a fairly good team and were always going to beat the All Blacks at some stage. There are only so many close run things before one falls your way. If anything it has probably helped the All Blacks as good teams will always learn more from a loss than a victory, no matter how close as the win can paper over the cracks.

What the Wallabies need to learn is how to backup this win with another even more commanding performance against lesser (than the All Blacks) opposition. Without this attribute, to be able to play at or near your best week after week, you really have no hope of winning the World Cup.

To my mind the biggest area to be worked on is the defence.

The defensive effort is the bedrock of the modern game and the one that the All Blacks have successfully built their recent domination on.

Sure they can attack with the best, but if that is a little off they can rely on the defence to keep them ahead or at least close enough to get the result.

A solid defence will also increase turnovers and minimise the amount of ground gained by the opposition meaning they get more attacking opportunities against a disorganised line and also have less distance to travel to the try line to score.

The biggest Aussie culprit for me is Q Cooper. I think the thing that makes him such a potent attacking force is actually what hinders him defensively.

In attack he wants to show his skills with great flat long passes, the stutter step etc making him a difficult proposition. In defence he wants to dominate in the same way. He tries to belt the ball carrier, but lacks the size and technique making him more of a turnstile.

If he just turned it down a bit and just worked on the fundamentals he’d be fine. You don’t see Dan Carter truly clean anyone up, but no one questions his defence.

If Quade and the Wallabies can get their defence in order I think that long sort after consistency is theirs to take. When they shake THAT gorilla off their backs they can have a real tilt at the World Cup.

Your stretching the truth Sammo I think you will find you are in a very small minority. Most of the country couldn't give two hoots about the game. Tha Wallabies may be the number one threat Sammo but this game remained and was a dead rubber it had no effect on anything. The coaches know that and they were certainly not happy about the loss but there was nowhere near the concern and disappointment that you and others are trying to make out.

'Kiwi arrogance' goes unfortunately hand in hand with Black's supporters. They just put down anyone else and somehow believe the World Championship is only their domain. That smug swagger of the Black players really grates and you just love seeing them fall flat on their faces again. Anyone but the Blacks for mine!

In the last 20 mins Carter not there Aussies come back. ...The real reason abs' lost. Just as unlikely as the win to Aussies on the weekend is them losing to wales this coming one. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Your understanding of what they meant by the term dead rubber is the Bledisloe wasn’t up for grabs, nor was standing in the Tri Nations affected. That doesn’t mean that as a contest where the result will stand in perpetuity doesn’t matter. You don’t understand the ethos of the All Blacks to suggest otherwise. Both teams wanted to win and the All Black players and coaches were clearly displeased at the outcome.

Well this is all going to plan, a year out from RWC and chinks in the armour appear. Just in time for another flop. They do it every 4 years. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Oh Bayboy. I watch all these shows and frequent those sites. The word 'dead rubber' came up but that was not the views of the journalists or presenters, it was more of a conversation piece. The few articles I read were that word was used as a headline were journalists trying to find reasons why the stadium had such poor ticket sales. And to say the public are not effected by this loss is crazy. People are calling for Stephen Donald to be burned at the stake and for Henry's head for playing him. There are articles everywhere writing about where it went wrong, there is debate all over Blogs and facebook and at the bar I manage its constantly talked about. On all these shows and sites you refer to they point to the Wallabies as the number 1 threat to the ABs winning the world cup, and any loss to the Wallabies generally gets the NZ rugby public down. So to say most would not give two hoots is utter rubbish.

As for your comment the NZ public are reeling that is the biggest fabrication of the Truth if ever I had seen it. Most couldn't give two hoots as there was nothing lost here except a bit of pride. The Wallabies have won one game in the last 11 matches. There is nothing to worry about yet, if anything they may have just done the All Blacks and almighty favour and slit their own throats

I'd suggest you go back to the NZ herald and read the sports section more thoroughly. I'd also suggest that you watch Reunion, Rugby Centre, This given Sunday. Stuff.co.nz etc and you will find it all too easily most ex All Blacks and rugby journalists had written this test off as a dead rubber well before Saturday. But of course that doesn't fit the over hyped gloating of many Wallaby fans who were only weeks if not days ago consigning their team to the trash bin. Again all of these comments can be found here in the roar search old articles. Celebrate the win but look at it realistically. They have to back it up and they have to beat NZ in the next Bledisloe anything else will be a failure of epic proportions.

I agree. I did not read any article on any site or any paper in NZ about this game being a 'dead rubber' Only a few mumblings by the odd few public on sites making comments but other than that the general feeling towards that test like any other trans tasman match was complete anticipation and utter excitement. Infact the only articles about 'dead rubbers' came from foriegn press referring to the slow ticket sales for the HK test. The NZ Press and the public have been left reeling after this loss. It is our national sport afterall. We have acknowledged the Wallabies fantastic performance and we like our Australian counterparts agree this was one of the best tests between our two nations for a long time even though it was one the ABs lost. If anything some are happy this happened because it ads to the excitement factor for the world cup and it has woken up the ABs and coach's to the fact that they can be beaten.

Some of my fellow country men are idiots. What rubbish there is not one kiwi alive or one All Black that considers any test dead rubber. The ABs and especially Donald and Henry for selecting him are being roasted alive by the media and on blogs. ABs and NZs want to win every match - it is our ethos. Dead rubber - absolute rubbish. The wallabies did a fantastic job, and I thought O'conner and Beale were outstanding and really proved them selves worthy of the hype. Their counter attack was sizzling, Pocock was brilliant, AAC was strong (and one of the best but most under rated wallaby). Most of all they showed mental strength that I have not seen for many years. Awesome. As this article pointed out there were bad defensive and scum weaknesses but they will get stronger over time. As an AB fan and an NZ'r am I worried - not on your life - it makes the game more fun and its good to have some competition - and as long as Henry doesn't make terrible selections again (but he might) we will continue tp dominate - if he brings some of the enthusiastic guns back in like ranger - slade - sitivatu etc combined with the old hands and minds - no worries. Bring it on - the wallaby win just makes it more exciting...

Geez there have been some aussie posters on here that have posted some pretty good stuff and at times quite insightful I have really enjoyed reading it. But there are unfortunately quite a few clowns who come on here 11 games later to go as overboard as possible with the chest beating and crowing. Your doing the rest a disservice.

OJ, I think its a case of such a long time between drinks. Im an Aussie and was so excited about the win. Im still coming down from it. That said I do get a little embarrased sometimes when people come out and say that the Wallabies are now going to win the WC/that the All Blacks are going to choke/etc. For mine, the Blacks are still red hot favourites to lift Bill next year.

Bayboy, the Wallabies did not play out off their skins. They were equally as bumbling as the All Blacks at times. But guess what? We beat the team that was previously unbeaten. So yeah, we're pretty excited, so what!

Dunc, sadly I don't think he does. One thing I really struggle with understanding about Deans is that he persists with some players who have already peaked. While not quite believing all the hype bandied about for the last few years he was a very good player. There used to be a spark about Gits' play that has been missing since the big boys left town (Larkham and Morty) Maybe Deans wants to give Gits every chance to adjust to the new team game, but how many chances does the guy get. I'd be looking at leaving him on the bench and playing Barnes just to have a look at the options against Wales and then play whatever you reckon looks best against France.

Hmmmmm...congrats to the Wallabies for beating my team, the mighty All Blacks. Yes the AB's need to go and have a think as Pocock, Beale, O'Connor..and others come on in leaps and bounds. But if was a Walla fan, I would be seriously concerned about Gits. Does Deans have the guts to drop him? Thoughts?

Ahhhh.... common sense at last. The problem in my mind was not taking DC off but who he was replaced with. For that you can only blame the coaches. I have never been a fan of Donald, through Super Rugby or tests. He looks like meccano man, all angles and judders with no fluency or suppleness to his play. Surely Slade was the man for the job, he deputised so well in earlier tests. You cannot replace the irreplaceable but you can at least put a competent 5/8th on the field to get the team over the finish line. All the BS about NZ and Oz being somehow two completely different sets of humans belittles what we have in common. We are brothers who like to get one over the other at every opportunity. Keep the vitriol for the Poms. Blinky Bill has it right. The real question for Henry is that he thought he had the finished article, clearly HK has shown him he does not. He knows where his gaps are. He lacks a backup to Carter and he is yet to take McCaw off the field in any game of note (and why would you) but at the same time this is the crux of his problem. He has an ageing team that is very dependent on key players. Sure Australia has some issues in this area as well but the All Blacks without DC and Richie would be hard pushed to match the Wobblies without QC and Pocock.
