Older and heavier but Legends of Origin still inspire

By Luke Doherty / Roar Guru

A new name entered calculations for the New South Wales State of Origin side last night. He may be a little old, a little inexperienced and, well, a fruiterer. But he has a big heart and that’s all that matters. Welcome to the Blues brotherhood, Tony Trim.

Who, you ask?

Well, Trim donated $14,600 to play alongside his heroes in the Legends of Origin match at a sold out Parramatta Stadium last night.

The fierce arena has chewed up many New South Wales players, but Trim showed he could handle the pressure.

He’d just taken the field and was already puffing like a steam train on the wing when Brad Fittler spotted him and put in a chip.

Trim, living every over 35’s dream, found himself in acres of space, collected the bouncing pill and crashed over for the Blues first try.

He celebrated like he’d just won an Olympic medal, but so he should.

It’s something that he’ll remember for the rest of his life, and by 5pm today, the story he tells his workmates won’t even vaguely resemble the real event.

To cap it off, Ryan Girdler missed the conversion, but at least he chucked in the trademark nose-wipe on the left sleeve prior to taking the kick.

It was an amazing night for rugby league and no doubt the goodwill will flow on to those in need in Queensland.

Every ticket was sold in just 32-hours and the event was organised in merely eight days.

The players did their part. For those that still had hair, it was standing on end as Shannon Noll belted out the national anthem. Their faces were as pumped as some of the stomachs.

David Peachey and Nathan Blacklock were all razzle-dazzle. Fittler broke the line and produced a stunning left-foot step.

Front-rowers were throwing cut-out passes and a rampaging Gorden Tallis steamrolled the Blues left-edge. Mark Carroll was being a pest, as was Benny Elias.

Elias wasn’t taking a backward step, either, even when Andrew Symonds looked like he wanted to punch his head in.

The match was an example of how sport, and specifically rugby league, can be used for good.

The code will always have to deal with controversy, but the good guys far outweigh those who are prone to self-destruction. For the record, Queensland won 20 to 16.

It seems new coach Ricky Stuart has a big job on his hands this year. Sticky, just don’t forget Tony Trim. He may be your best bet.

Great coverage of the match Luke. Initially envisaged a glorified game of touch, lttle did I know what wa to enfold. For guys who have been out of the game for so long or and some recent retirees, the ferocity of the tackling and the barnstorming runs of the Tallis'of this world ,knoocked my suspicions into the outer. Watching Mario on the receiving end a beautifully timed and perfectly executed Campion(body folding) special was worth the price of admission(even though I watched on Fox). The game was played with the passion and intent ,one expects of the real SOO McCoy.If age doesn't wary these gutys, the hits and vigorous runs will. Great concept Geyer(once an idiot now a champion citizen),congrats to all the players and to the fans who supported the match, which was really about the victims of the horrific tragedy that unfolded before our very eyes. And special thoughts to the family whose teenage son, gave his life to save his brother ,and the mother who died with him,and for which this match was dedicated. Tony Trim have to say you lived out any sporting male's dream to play with the best or past legends, and score a try.Every man is a legend in his dreams, you lived the dream....bugger.

excellent article luke. fantastic effort by the rugby league fraternity. can't think of too many other rugby codes in this country that could pull together such a tremendous reaction from ex-players, supporters and the media in such a short space of time. well done rugby league.

Luke, a great story, extremely well told. NSW winger Tony Trim (what a great name for a Walter Mitty sports tragic) fulfilled every fantasy of the Australian male, at least the NSW variety, of scoring a try against Queensland. I reckon that he is going to dine and wine out on this yarn for the rest of his life, with the metres he ran to score his try getting longer and longer the more he tells his great story.

I was pleasantly surprised while switching through the channels to discover this game. It was just great to see the old time greats of Origin back again in action. Brought back many memories. I am a Queensland fan because I have family who have played for Queensland in union and league but I must say that last night I could not help cheering for the NSW wing Trim. I actually thought that he was one of the greats of Origin until the commentators said that he donated thousands of dollars to play. The face of with Tallis was priceless. Great game and great people. Thanks for the joy you guys continue to give us fans and for the generosity for a good cause.

I missed out on tickets but watched it on the fox live stream and was thoroughly entertained. Could TRIM be a shock selection for the Blues this season?

Looked like a great game. I must say though, I am a bit disappointed in the lack of pulicity as I would have loved to have watched it live, not hear about it the nest day on the news briefs. Fox must have put in a substantial donation but surely free to air tv would've attracted a larger audience? And not sure if they had one or not, but, some sort of "Telethon" type phone in donations during the game would've been massive!!

Luke, two things stood out for me watching the game. Firstly the passion that is embodied in the maroon jumper. You cannot manufacture this. Secondly, the story of Andrew Symonds. Obviously the "culture" of the current Australian cricket team has passed him by. But watching him play last night he seems in a happier place. Sport ultimately finds you out and there is no place to hide in the middle. You live and die with your mates. And this is what marketing men and psychologists cannot manufacture. And the fans watching can tell a dud when they see one. All great players yesterday and coming together in a good cause. All in all a night where generosity and goodwill reigned supreme.
