Rugby league on South African television

By Contact Sport Fan / Roar Rookie

As a South African, rugby union is obviously my preferred game. But two years ago, a friend gave me a DVD set with State of Origin highlights and I really enjoyed it.

So my point is this: there isn’t always great rugby on television and a broadcaster like SuperSport can accommodate a game or two of league on its channels, but this is not happening. Why?

I mean we already get AFL, gridiron, basketball and baseball through ESPN. I find it puzzling that rugby league is nowhere to be seen on South African screens.

Is the NRL simply not interested? Any thoughts?

NRL streams all its game worldwide - except in countries where there are host broadcasters. Open up your wallets and you will see all NRL and ARL matches :)

Jackson. Get real , they sometimes in fact call it heaven's game. Please there is just as much coming from the mouths and keyboards of union commentators as those of their league counterparts.I spent 5 years at school playing union, and the condescending attitude toward rl was embarrassing at times, by the sportsmaster and even a few of the students . You speak for all league types ? Many so called league types find statements describing their game as being cringeworthy. How many times have we read or heard rl being described as the game they play in Wigan. I add this rider, any sport worth its salt, should consider it the best.

Dave .What the!!! The same argument can be thrown back,it happens in all codes.I have read fans and writers (ru) express the very same points you have directed aginst some rl fans.I have heard it first hand. Stop looking at the world through rose coloured glasses.Spend a little time in England and read their press on rl at times,by critics,or dare I say it even here.Pop's post is evidence enough.

Having just watched Origin, one thing I never understand is: why do so many League players throw those wonky 'floater' passes? They seem to me to be slow and often inaccurate... Ok if the man is right next to you, but tonight I saw a number of examples of where players attempted to pass 10 metres+ with those passes... Incidentally, the only player I have seen doing it this year in Union is one of our own resident leaguies, Kurtley Beale.... A sign of things to come? There must be a use for that type of pass, although I don't remember Stephen Larkham ever throwing one... Can anyone enlighten me?

the difference is that Union commentators do not continually call it the 'game they play in heaven'!!! League types love the hyperbole!

I cannot see rugby league overtaking rugby union in South Africa in 500 years time. I'd like to imagine it could happen, but I just cannot see it.

this is the main reason why rugby league is in the bottom of the rugby codes food chain because some fans, players and even those running the game thinks its superior to any sports on this planet when it is not. stop pretending to be a south african and look in your own backyard of australia because rugby league isnt even superior there.

rugby league is easy to play as an amateur and in profesional level you dont need any speacial skills just run, pass and tackle.

yes karlos, the wallabies, all blacks and south africans finds NFL and football trainning out of this world just as AC Milan and major European foottball clubs find the All Blacks skills, fitness and vision amazing. The NZ Warriors call in Samoan rugby legend Brian Lima to come and give them a hand on defence. You also might want to read an article in a newcastle newspaper a couple of years ago about Andrew Johns and the Knights players who were shell shock at the passing skills of All Black halfback Piri Weepu when he did a session with them.

The Liberal Party was in power for 23 years (until 1973), democratically elected The ANC has been in power for 17 years, democratically elected. In both situations, the majority of the population has voted for the same party at a number of elections. What's the problem, Pops? I am so tired of hearing from whites in South Africa about 'how bad it is now'....

Well Pops maybe you should apologise for the comment you made about rugby league. As that was part of your snide comment. The code knows all about injustices (circa 41-46),that occurred in the land of my ancestors..

I'd be a very rich man indeed ;) Unfortunately you can see it coming. Any mention of TV ratings and bammo there's no stopping it. Anyone actuallt given thought to the idea that TV ratings are a bit like cartographic maps, they get it wrong in many of the most important areas, where accuracy is totally eroded away by sweeping comments etc...

I don't know what you've been drinking but I want some!:-) In case you don't know, rl in Fiji is to some degree been absorbed by rugby union. A lot of blokes there play both codes because they can, to make money in the case of RL and also to get noticed at an elite level. For Fijians, probably the only money-making opportunity they will get is to play rugby (RU or RL, doesn't matter!). It's this kind of attitutde and athletic ability that will drive a merger of the rugby codes. It's already starting to happen.

I know that ground fairly well; 18k is definitely an overinflated figure. You'd be pushing to get 10K

Most can play Rugby Union as well. I reckon the problem many expansionists have is in not acknowledging the reality, that most people can't play Rugby league at the most competitive (tactically and technically level) so yes Soccer is probably this kind of game, but because everyone can play it well means few can truly excell. Rugby Union is much the same, but it's not the sport of the people in virtually every part of the world and it knows this. It has its niche and it's starting to resemble mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs ;)
