NRL bid team to fly as the Bombers

By Wayne Heming / Expert

One of the teams vying for inclusion in an expanded NRL competition hope to take off as early as 2013 as the Brisbane Bombers.

That’s the name bid chairman Craig Davison is tipped to unveil, along with the team’s official playing colours of navy blue and orange, at a major announcement on Thursday morning at Albion Park Raceway.

Several potential names were suggested by 12,000 fans including Braves, Bayliners and Barracudas, before market research strongly recommended Bombers.

While the name might anger AFL officials and fire up fans of Melbourne club Essendon, who believe the Bombers’ name is their property, there are already instances of NRL-AFL cross-code clashes with Wests Tigers and Richmond (Tigers), and Canterbury Bulldogs and Western Bulldogs sharing the same nicknames.

Manly (Sea Eagles) and West Coast (Eagles) also share similar names.

The bid team’s logo will feature a bomber pilot and air force wings with the name Bombers embroidered across the top of the pilot’s aviator cap and goggles.

Checks with ASIC confirm the name Brisbane Bombers was registered on July 5.

Davison however declined to confirm Bombers as the name the team would announce.

The inner-city trotting and greyhound complex, Albion Park, a virtual ghost track these days, is rumoured as the Bombers’ likely home base.

Trotting and greyhound racing is relocating to a re-developed $50 million multi-purpose track at Deagon on Brisbane’s northside.

With plans for state-of-the-art training fields, a community club, pool, gymnasium and administration offices, their set-up would rival any in the NRL.

The bid team has already flagged its interest in rugby union superstars Quade Cooper and Sonny Bill Williams and been approached by agents representing more than 20 NRL players interested in signing up.

Bid directors Davison, Nick Livermore and Bill Rae, who have dedicated thousands of hours to putting together their detailed expansion proposal, have letters of intent from about 20 players and a shortlist of coaching candidates and potential chief executives.

Brisbane needs a second team no matter what they call themselves. If they do come into the comp I would love to see some big name players like Quade Cooper or Cameron Smith or Sonny Bill. Plus I like the name te Bayliners. Sounds catchy. I am a Broncs fan but I would back Bayliners/Bombers, hell, I would back both teams and go to every local darby. Imagine, Brisbane Bayliners vs Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. Broncs would have to where their yellow jerseys while Bayliners where their full Navy and orange jersey. Sweet, cool, can't wait!!!

If you live in Perth which I understand is located in WA,you will have heard or seen the Red Kangaroos bounding around the countryside in all their magnificence. That sir, is the origin of the team's name.It was spelt out in black and white when the team applied to join the ARL in 1995.It was indeed the popular choice at the time. The team was not named after Pauline Hansen,or our current leader Red Sonya. Any state that does not have a premier sporting team operating there,is hardly going to attract multitiudes to non events. They apparently did line up(15,000 to be precise) to watch other NRL teams in atrocious conditions to watch a non event.

Brisbane seem to have the emphasis in the logo of Bombers as pilots as opposed to Essendons bombers as planes in their logo. This is a slight distinction at least.

Maybe Essendon can rename their nickname from "The Bombers" to 'The Bullants' based on the nickname of the famous Manuka ACT club which also played in the colours of black and red sash. However, those colours were transferred to Eastlake because the Sydney Swans stole Eastlake's colours of white and red V to allow the Sydney Swans reserves to play in the Canberra competition. So I wouldn't feel any sympathy for Essendon or the AFL over this issue, although "The Brisbane Bombers' is an awful name for a new NRL side.

The Perth RL team were first proposed as Perth Pumas when accepted by the NSWRL, but by the time of entry in 1995 had changed to use of a Red Kangaroo, which is located mainly in western & central Australia - hence "Western Reds".

I live in Perth and just don't get the Reds name. It has no links with WA and is the name of the well known and respected Queensland Union team. League is pretty much a non event here outside the faithful so any new NRL team will be trying to establish itself from scratch. From a marketing perspective it will need a unique name that resonates with the Western Australian community. "reds" just doesn't do it.

Lachlan. Weight now on the other foot, after Folau and Hunt.It does hurt, and I understand your discomfort. The new team has already sought legal advice from 3 different legal people. There is no copying of Essendon's logo,no copying of their colours,no domiciling a team of the same name in the same state, and they are not playing the same football code. I realise the AFL has a bottomless pit of loot, and judging by the comments of a Vic I.P lawyer when confirming only the logo can be protected,it would be doing the legal fraternity a service if some of this $1.25b lobbed into their pockets. A direct attack on the Suns, really LOL .I did not realise the new team was going to play out of Robina, unless you know something the rest of us don't.I understood the Suns were an attack on the Titans, with Hunt taking point duty.

They don't exist, but the name(GC Giants) may well have been retained by the consortium that once owned them, under Sattler. See my earlier point on the Cronulla rl sharks and The Sutherland Soccer Sharks. It is indeed controversial much like the defection of Folau and Hunt,so the righteous indignation is now on the other foot. Some like to call it karma,I call it publicity for rugby league. If perchance the Brisbane Bombers(who are not even in the NRL) are told by the court they are out of line they will end up with egg on their faces.Conversely if Essendon gets caned in court, they will come out as being overly precious with a tidy legal expense bill to pay.

RedB No excuse !!!!! Unless I am mistaken ,we live in a carbon tax impregnated democracy, and as such a football code can pretty well call itself whatever it so chooses. If Brisbane Bombers flows off the tongue, and has been adjudged by marketing experts as indeed a goer, then live with it. It gets down to the I.P of the club, which is the logo.A club does not have the intellectual property rights of a general name such as Bombers,Sharks,Magpie,Giants, more so when there are different codes involved and in different states and countries. I have mentioned the situation with the Cronulla sharks and the Sutherland soccer sharks, the latter no doubt will apply for an A league license in future years, logos in fact very similar. There is no angst. Thus a precedent set. The new team( if in fact it gets in),will have a completely different logo, different colours, different code, operate in a different state, and your mob believe they are differnt to anyone else in the world. If the red and browns want to flush good money down the toilet, then they are to be applauded for being naive. The lawyers are licking their lips in wallet size anticipation, bring it on.

You have never heard of the Giants that once played in the ARL.Privately owned by a consortium including John Sattler.Never hurts to do some research. The comparison is very simple.A club has a logo licensed(protected). It cannot license the use of a name .I mentioned the Cronulla Sharks and the Sutherland Soccer sharks all operating within about 4 kms of each other. No problems ,no angst. Well how about the Kangaroos rugby league team and the Nth Melbourne Kangaroos.Waiting,waiting,thinking......... The new consortium (and i am not a fan of the name BTW),are not amateurs, they sought legal advice from 3 sources.Even an I.P lawyer in Victoria stated the Essendon Bombers don't have a leg to stand on. Different code, operating in a diffferent state, with a completely different logo.Worth its weight in gold publicitywise.

Lachlan, I would imagine that burning feeling your getting around the forehead is not too dissimilar to the the feeling us RL supporters got when the AFL poached a couple of our star players to gain attention for their new franchises. Or the GWS Giants craftily borrowing the colour palette of West Tigers for their jerseys. Hurts for a while, but it'll pass. And, not to understate things too much, but it's a name of a football club, not some biblical deity. Bombers Shombers. Whatever. Jesus, lighten up.

I do remember the Dolphins. I don't remember the Chargers, Giants and Seagulls. The Sharks was also considered, however it was not pursued as it was already taken.

This is exactly what these brainless clowns wanted, people talking about the new team and they've succeed, not only nrl supporters but australian football supporters are talking about it. By copying the nickname, like tigers, bulldogs and eagles, they have created controversy and anger. While the other nicknames are used around the world, the 'bombers' is significant and original and historic, to australian football. If the new brisbane team thought that they've heard the end of it and the names set in stone, they're wrong. The AFL is seeking legal advice. By targetting one of the biggest clubs in australia, this new franchise might have bitten off more than they can chew. This is also a direct attack on the new queensland franchise 'Gold Coast Suns'. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

I live the Brisbane Bombers name. Just like the Melbourne Storm Thunder sound at kick-off, imagine if the Bombers can have the air raid siren going off at Suncorp! Everyone looking up at the ball while the air raid siren is sounding, would make a few full backs nervous! -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

University of Mississipi 'Ole Miss Rebels' are a pretty old school. UNLV in Las Vegas are also the Rebels. Oakland Rebels are the most famous Junior basketball club in the SF Bay Area. I think there would be a heap at HS level especially in the old southern states. I;m surprised the convicts hasn't got a run somewhere in Aussie sports.

@ GrecoRoman - as an official club moniker Reds wasn't adopted til the Super era, however Greg Growden & Phil Wilkins were using Reds in the SMH from 1989, and if you look at the posts from "Harry" in that linked Roar thread, it sets out well that the Ballymore crowd were using a "Reds!" cry in the state team's heyday period of the late 1970s.

Thanks for the history Greco, look mate, if you asked anyone in Brisbane to name the Melbourne AFL teams, most would not have a clue, the pies? Collingwood eddie? Maybe a few cat lovers. But the Dons and Bombers? nobody has a clue to these Melbourne teams. Most are just not interested, they are more concerned about a second Brisbane team.

Melanie, Aside from the derogatory comment towards Queenslanders, which I shall let slide, I agree - it's a stupid name. Why does it need to be an alliteration at all. Me personally, I'd prefer it if all the teams were just somewhere Rugby League Footbal Club (RLFC). So this would be the, for example, South Brisbane R.L.F.C. Keep the message simple...
