Preston Campbell announces retirement

Gold Coast Titans’ Preston Campbell will retire at the end of the 2011 NRL season, ending a 14-year career of 250 NRL matches, Dally M Medal and a premiership.

The 34-year-old Campbell had previously agreed to play on in season 2012, but made the decision to focus on community work and life after rugby league.

“I feel like it’s time for me to start the next phase of my life off the field,’’ said Campbell.

“I could have gone another year but I want to concentrate more on what I’m going to be doing after footy here at the Titans.

“I’m still going to be employed by the club off the field and I’ll still be around to help some of the new guys settle in next year.’’

Titans Managing Director Michael Searle spoke highly of Campbell.

“Preston has had a wonderful career and has been an integral part of what we’ve been able to build here at the Titans both on and off the field,’’ said Searle.

“He’s made such a positive contribution to the club in so many different ways and that’s the reason he’ll continue to be involved with the Titans for many years to come.’’

Coach John Cartwright reflected on Campbell’s contribution to the club and the game.

“Presto has been such an important contributor at the club since our very first game in 2007 to now,’’ said Cartwright.

“He scored the match-winning try in our first ever win against Cronulla at Carrara in the club’s second game and has scored plenty more along the way.

“There’s not many players that play with the courage that he does and the fact he’s been able to do it at an elite level for such a long time is testament to that. It’s been a pleasure to be able to coach a player of his talent.”

Rogers was a mistake although I think everyone had the right intentions. Presto is a true champ and gent, but he should have left on a (relative) high last season. Can this season get any worse(for a Titans fan)? Let just finish it now and get on with next season.

the Titans are going to have salary cap problems next year and hopefully they dont get him to come back mid year like Rogers if they run into trouble...

I reckon the best retirements are the one that somewhat take you by surprise, and Preston qualifies for me on this score. Great player, great ambassador for both the game and the indigenous culture, and a long off-field career awaits. Well played, Presto...

I think the Titans needed him, but he got his timing wrong, one year to long Presto, but you can still hold your head high, been a inspiration to the game.
