Channel Nine set to disappoint Wallabies fans

By The Roar / Editor

Channel Nine appear set to snub the Wallabies’ crucial Pool C encounter with Ireland on Saturday September 17, with the match playing second-fiddle to the NRL semi-finals and likely be shown on a three-hour delay at 9.45pm, with digital channel GEM currently not planned to be utilised.

Broadcast information obtained by The Roar on Friday indicated that the match, kicking off at 6:30pm (AEST) on September 17, would be broadcast into Sydney and Brisbane at 9.45pm upon the completion of the NRL semi-final, played at 7.30pm.

Melbourne and Adelaide fans will wait until five hours after the kick-off, with the match screened at 11.30pm while fans in Perth will see the match at 8.00pm local time.

When contacted by the The Roar, Channel Nine’s programming department confirmed that at this stage the match would be shown at 9.45pm.

They were unable to confirm whether they would be re-scheduling the match to Nine’s digital channel GEM, with Nine currently preferring to broadcast a double episode of Antiques Roadshow at 6.30pm AEST.

Currently, the interim anti-siphoning list requires Australian test matches to be shown first (or at least simultaneously) on Nine’s main channel as a Tier B event.

But Nine’s decision broadcast the two Bledisloe Cup matches live on GEM to Victorian, South Australian and Western Australian audiences last month, following an amendment to the Broadcasting Services Act sets the precedent for the matches to be shown on GEM.

A similiar amendment would allow the matches to be broadcast live, making Nine’s current stance on next Saturday night a difficult one to fathom.

CEO David Gyngell boasted Nine “truly are the Wide World of Sports” – but the preference for NRL ratings will be hard to stomach for rugby fans who had been counting on Nine for their free-to-air coverage.

The Roar calls on Channel Nine to broadcast this vital Wallabies’ Rugby World Cup match live for sports fans across Australia.

Press Release(October 2008): Channel Nine and FOX SPORTS are pleased to announce an agreement with the International Rugby Board (IRB) to provide live television coverage of the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015. The IRB rights deal with FOX SPORTS encompasses all matches from the 2011 Rugby World Cup to be played in New Zealand and the 2015 Rugby World Cup (Venue TBC). Channel Nine will bring free-to-air viewers all the action from the big games in the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and again in 2015. David Gyngell, CEO of Channel Nine, said “We are very happy to add these two big World Cups to our International Cricket World Cups and Rugby League World Cup and of course, the next two Olympic Games on Nine. Wide World of Sports on Nine is the home of big international and national sport and we are thrilled to have such a full program of events through to 2015.” FOX SPORTS will broadcast live and national coverage of all matches from both tournaments. This agreement includes mobile and online rights for all matches for both events. David Malone, CEO of FOX SPORTS said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Channel Nine and the IRB and are pleased to be able to provide our subscribers with live and national coverage of every match played as part of the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups. “In securing these rights, FOX SPORTS is again demonstrating our long term commitment to rugby union and to investing in premium content for our subscribers. FOX SPORTS has been the exclusive live Australian broadcaster of Super Rugby since it turned professional in 1996, as well as being the domestic host broadcaster of the Wallabies for the past 3 years and the subscription television broadcaster of the 1999, 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups.” International Rugby Board Chairman, Bernard Lapasset, said: “The IRB is excited that it will be working with broadcasters FOX SPORTS and Channel Nine for Rugby World Cup 2011 and 2015. FOX SPORTS showed its commitment to Rugby World Cup in 2003 when it created a Rugby channel for the tournament and it has a proven pedigree in Rugby broadcasting. Channel Nine is renowned as a broadcaster of major events and will provide the free-to-air coverage of the tournament in Australia. This coverage means the Australian public will enjoy comprehensive, high quality coverage of Rugby World Cup which is now one of the world’s largest sports events.” This announcement comes off the back of a record-breaking year for Rugby Union on FOX SPORTS. This year, game 1 of the Bledisloe Cup set a new subscription television (STV) rugby union audience and ranks as the #1 STV program for the year to date. The 2008 Super 14 also achieved record results this year with average audiences up 26% year on year.

Crazyhorse, I know personally 3 South African immigrants who now watch & attend NRL games. Once they come to new country, immigrants can have the propensity to like & enjoy new experiences.

This opinion piece regarding Channel Nine's coverage of RWC 2011 pretty much sums up my feelings... http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/2878512.html Phone hacking? No, Nine's Rugby is the real media scandal “Which brings me to Channel Nine. Oh you loathsome parasites. You life-suckers, you magic-killers, you utter, utter bastards. The Rugby World Cup is the biggest sporting event this year. It’s close by in New Zealand, which is about the same time zone, at least in hours if not decades. The Wallabies, having had a couple of lean years, have suddenly found some form and are again a decent chance. This will be a good tournament. Having never ever showed the slightest interest in Union, your cynicism in buying the rights for all Wallabies games and a few other pool games and the finals is simply breathtaking. First game of the tournament is tonight, at 6:00pm. When do we get to see it in Melbourne? 1:40am tomorrow morning. You have three channels, you s, could you not put it on one of them? Oh no, you need to show a seven-year-old episode of Friends, and two episodes of CSI/NCIS/WTF, and a couple of lame-arse movies and a game of Rugby League on three-hour delay (as usual). I don’t care about bias or defamation or phone-hacking, THIS is why we need tighter regulation of the media. A network that has shares in the Pay network (Fox3) that’s showing all the games live outbids a network that would actually treat the tournament with some respect (hello, SBS). Then it hides the games in the middle of the night, so the only way to watch is to buy a Foxtel box, which is what they really want in the first place. Channel 9 has no, repeat no interest in showing the Rugby World Cup.” Justin Shaw, The Drum

2006 census shows around 18,000 South Africans in Perth, many people are not interested in any sport, and you know what, this has nothing to do with the AFL, channel 7, not channel 9 shows the AFL. You could not be more wrong, dont let any any facts whatsoever get in the way of your posts.

The third biggest sporting event on the planet deserves better coverage. There was a poll released in Perth last week that shows that two thirds of the Perth population are NOT interested in AFL. Hardly anyone is interested in NRL. There are over 200,000 Rugby mad South Africans in Perth and a similar number of New Zealanders with the Irish population exploding. Yet Channel 9 is only showing the Aussie games. Figure that one out!

Channel 9 have always disappointed with showing sport. Cricket, Rugby League and Rugby Union. Even Super League in England, they show one match at 12am on Monday Morning. Who can stay up to watch that? They are just like a cashed-up EPL team. They get the rights to everything and then leave everyone on the bench and just give them little snippets of game time. I'm not the biggest Rugby fan, i love my NRL but even i'm outraged at Channel 9's coverage of the world cup. They definately need some sort of viewers choice or to show games on 9 and or GEM live. Give people an option. What's the point in having a sister station if you don't utilise it. It only happens every 4 years. Antiques roadshow can be shown anytime. Us avid sport watchers need to watch the game live. And what's this only showing Aus matches during the group rounds. I know many people from NZ and England who love rugby in this country, so why not show their matches aswell. I'm sure they would get higher ratings even if it is on GEM. Fox sports is the true wide world of sports and have better coverage. Unfourtuantely not everyone can afford pay-tv so we have to deal with big TV execs who don't like to share.

The likelihood is that Channel 9 don't see Australia's important games happening until at least the semi-finals. Or maybe the final....

BBC use it for Wimbledon, F1 and 6 Nations coverage. People who want to watch normal programming can press the red button and switch. Loig and Rugby fans get to watch their games live, the rest can have a normal program to watch. Ch9 gets better ratings, everyone is a winner but it requires effort and service.

Hey Oikee, don't forget that here in Melbourne we didn't get the Dragon's game until 10pm (On Foxtel). and believe me, I thought that was brilliant, usually the game is only starting when tonight's finishes. I did get to see a bit of RU game. but Mrs won the argument and we watched Tennis .. lol. OOoops, and Nine still showed the NRL at midnight!! Enjoy the game tomorrow. Foxtel will show us both games LIVE, I hope!.
