NRL's fear of the GWS "Body Snatchers"

By Athas Zafiris / Roar Guru

When it comes to football code war prophecy, Rugby League hyper-ventilator and Penrith Panthers boss, Phil ‘Gus’ Gould, is the ‘Cassandra‘ of our times.

With AFL ovals sprouting like mushrooms in NRL heartland and the clock counting down to the debut season of the AFL expansion team, the Greater Western Sydney Giants, Gould jumped on to his pulpit to sound the alarm.

“Quite simply, the AFL is a monster. You have no idea how powerful, how well resourced, how well connected and how determined this code is in its aim to not only be the No.1 sport in Australia, but to totally obliterate rugby league in the process.

“The AFL has parked itself at Blacktown, the fastest growing area in the country.”

Meanwhile, hovering over Blacktown in the AFL Death Star, serial carbon gas emitter, Imre Salusinszky, fired off a salvo on behalf of the imperialist AFL crusade.

“Apparently, the followers and administrators of rugby league have realised the awful truth: the AFL is coming for your young men and is intent on converting them to the religion of the four big sticks.

“Australian football is superior: not just marginally but to an extent that means soccer and the rugby codes are destined for extinction, at least as major spectator sports in this country.”

That’s right. According to the warped world of Gus and Imre, the western suburbs of Sydney will soon resemble the sci-fi classic ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers,’ where the good townsfolk are replaced by GWS supporting doppelgangers that are created in over-sized AFL football shaped pods.

When “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” was first released, it was, depending on your politics, seen as a classic Cold War piece of anti-communist paranoia or attack on the bland conformity of the McCarthy era.

In the Australian Code War era it perfectly represents the fear some sections of the NRL community have of Andrew Demetrious’s rampant AFL expansionism. And, by latest reports, this will to be not restricted to our shores.

Phil Gould will be presenting this doom laden vision when the brand spanking new independent NRL commission convenes for the very first time. He will implore the commission and his arch-nemesis, NRL chairman, David Gallop, to stand up to the AFL menace and ensure the Western Sydney flock “choose rugby league as part of their lifestyles, for life.”

In situations like this it’s the most hysterical voices that are heard above the parapets. But with hostilities in their seemingly intractable civil war about to come to a formal end, the time is now right for the Rugby League to finally get its act together and for saner voices to prevail.

Yes, the AFL is exploring new markets and setting up outposts with its burgeoning war chest, but one hundred years of sporting culture and generational support does not simply end up in a landfill of discarded NRL jerseys.

The seemingly unstoppable AFL juggernaut will not be taking over Western Sydney in the forseeable future. Just like Starbucks they will find local resistance and end up catering to a niche market and AFL tourists.

Here is my word of advice to the residents of living in the shadow of GWS. If you catch the neighbour talking about the form of Israel Folau and Tom Scully, stay calm and accept the fact that the AFL will find some local adherents.

However, if you receive a blank stare after asking them how the Blues will go in the State of Origin, take a look in their back yard.

If you happen to see a large Sherrin shaped pod, panic!

lol 'The game that made Australia' ads well to those in VIC/WA/SA/Tas it was there game but to the majority of QLD/NSW it's far from the game that made the eastern states.

The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney once had a number of clubs representing it involved in the leading competitions of various codes. Hakoah Football club, Roosters, easts Union. It now has two clubs specfically representing it in major national comps based there, Roosters and Swans. Even the richest area of Australia is a finite universe, as the AFL well knows.

With all of these AFL ovals sprouting like mushrooms it seems odd that they can't find one in the outer west for GWS home games. There has been plenty of talk about local talent but there is also the issue of local games. Are the people of Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Rooty Hill and so on going to become emotionally attached to a team on the basis that they have a training facility in their region? When the AFL created the Brisbane Bears they stuck them on the Gold Coast hinterland. The people of Brisbane were amused.

Queensland's game is rugby league

Found this on the Brisbane Lions' 2011 Annual review: "the loss for the year was $1,855,926 (2010: loss of $2,476,274)." I'd like to know why the mods refused to let this post through the first time I submitted it? There's nothing inflammatory in it. Is The Roar being paid by the AFL to not publish anything that proves its mission to take over Queensland has been a miserable failure?

Ian You did not read my brief comment re the auditor's report. So you have fixed nothing. As the report stated and I acceded to the fact which you ignored , as to increased funding, eg from the head body, meaning increased funding from whatever source (cash flow) would alleviate any doubts. If they or Cronulla(which I have a reasonable 30 year knowledge about) are unable to secure increased fundings, then there is a problem.Hence the reasoning behind the $200m development proposal. There is no 100% iron clad guarantee for the Lions, the Sharks Manly, GC Suns or Titans, unless you can read into the future as to what will happen in Europe, the Oz unemployment rate,China,USA.Ask the retailers about the lie of the land. .So the companies behind the sport clubs, if unable to generate the funds, have a wee problem. IOW if they don't get continuous increased but declining membership etc ,the auditor's concerns would be validated. If that is clutching at straws, thenIi will proudly wear a straw boater.

Crosscoder, I've fixed your auditors paragraph for you. the ability of Barcelona FC, the New England Patriots, the Calgary Flames, the Cronulla Sharks and the Brisbane Lions to continue as a going concern is dependent upon the Company being able to successfully generate sufficient funds through membership, sponsorship, fundraising, gate receipts and other sources, including the league's distributions. They are a sports club, and by quoting that, you've gone seriously into clutching at straws.

Ian Whitchurch It is also well worth noting the auditor's report to get a sobering comment:- "Material uncertainty regarding continuation as a going concern. Without modification to the above opinion ,we draw attention to Note 1 (B) to t"he financial report that indicates that as at 31 October 2011,the company has a deficiency in net assets of $617,810 and a deficiency in current assets of $7,152,286 and that the ability of the Company to continue as a going concern is dependent upon the Company being able to successfully generate sufficient funds through membership, sponsorship, fundraising, gate receipts and other sources, including the AFL's distributions. these conditions, along with the other matters as set forth in note 1 (B),indicate the existence of material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt about the Company's ability to continue as a going concern and therefore, whether it will realise its assets and settle its liabilities in the normal course of business and at the amounts stated in the financial report." I have no doubt the grants from the head body will assist in the future, that being said the picture to date is not as rosy as some would be led to believe, unless the auditors have no idea.

Don't forget about the Lions. They lose millions of dollars each year. They're losing so much money they've resorted to setting up shop in Queensland's sporting capital, Logan. The Lions @ Springwood club are hoping that all of the local gamblers will prop up their failing club.

Aussie rules in Queensland isn't as healthy as the cheersquad would have us believe. The Brisbane Lions seem to lose millions of dollars each year. The cheersquad always go on about how much the Storm lose, but they always ignore the fact the Lions lose millions upon millions each year. The losses have been so great for the Lions that they've resorted to setting up a social club in Logan. For those who don't know, Logan is considered the gambling capital of Queensland. The Lions are hoping that all of the gamblers in Logan will flock to the Lions @ Springwood club and gamgle away their money. If that isn't a sign of desperation from a low-profile club then I'd like to know what is considered desperation! The Storm have not sunk to a low of this magnitude.

I would assume all sporting clubs aim would be to be in the black or at worst break even. The AFL clubs with all their memberships, crowds, and in some case poker machine monies should be in that position one would assume. Some of the losses are not exactly small champ. The AFL indeed have the means to cover it,and they are doing this also with GWS and GC 17.The NRL do not cover the losses,so don't waste head office money on removing losses.I have a feeling , I know which approach any head office would prefer.

Which confirms Brereton has no idea of the dynamics of Western Sydney.Has no idea what money the NRL will have at its disposal when the next TV deal is done.Has no idea of the effect of a centralised sporting code under the control of an i.C.Has no idea of the sporting makeup of youth in that area ,dominated by soccer and rl. Has no idea of the huge numbers of volunteers involved in both rl and soccer in the area, and the tradiitions involved. And using Gould as an arguemnt for support LOL. Just another ' we will swamp them " article from an AFL numbnut, who assumes money will buy love. BTW Dermie that is exactly the way to get people off side in the west.Go gungho. It will eventually come back to give you a $20m bite in the sporting allegiance backside. Gee Lachlan maybe the NRL should down tools and say all is lost. The ignorance of some within the AFL never ceases to amaze.

"The idea that unregulated capitalism encourages diversity is in fact not supportable. This I guess is how we all end up shopping at Woolworths and Coles and feeling somehow so enriched by the process and how the USA has suddenly ended up with a big four banking corporations, all of them beholding to the US government for bailouts and support.. " Ok...wow... ...breathe JVGO, breathe...I'm not reeeally sure what you're getting at...or how this comment relates to Aussie sport...or the Giants...but.. .. it does beautifully (and quite comically) encapsulate the paranoia suggested by the article. Everybody knows: AFL will NOT "take over" GWS. So relax pal, it just won't happen. But...it will enrich the community; just as the Jets have Newcastle, the Titans and Suns in the GC, the Roar Brisbane, the Dockers in Perth, the Storm Melbourne, the Cowboys in Townsville, the Force in Perth, the Warriors in NZ etc etc etc. These are better places to live because of, not despite of, a diversity of sporting teams. Name me ONE community that is worse off for having a new sports team added to it. ONE?
